Interesting topic here, have had a few interesting encounters to fit it to the subject.  The first one was at Petco, I was buying a leash and a halti canine head harness thought it could be modified for human use, though didn't ever really do much with it. As i was checking out, the girl at the register was singing the praises of the Halti harness as a training tool then told me she was off at 5pm, if i wanted to bring my dog along she would show me it in use. I couldn't help getting the mental image of myself returning later wearing the head harness thing and holding the leash in hand, busted up laughing hysterically at that point as i walked to my truck.

More recently though, i went to a farm supply store with someone very special to me with the intent to buy her some new riding crops.  We wandered the store for a bit before actually getting the crops. As we were checking out the girl at the check out got a very interesting sly smile as she saw the product we intended to purchase as we walked up to the register.  As she handled the crops to scan them she let slip one of the cutest giggles i have ever heard.

I live in SF... this just isn't a issue. Between we leather folk, the straight and kinky, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and just SF in general we don't ever have a problem. If anything we get cruised moreso because of it.

I bought Rope from an actual climbing store once rather than online like I usually do.

So you know I am a BIG boy and so I stuck out like a sore thumb around the shorter more physically fit guys walking around with chalk and Rope burns on thier hands and finally as I asked for help getting the rope cut and sealed. I Figured if I was paying that much more for it I should get my moneys worth. So I asked for the Re-Weave service they offered on the Nylon Core climbers Rope I had just purchased and that was when I met Mr. Helpful

This guy starts asking LOTS of questions, here is a Basic run down of our conversation into an awkward silence.

Him = Not to be rude but that rope isn't rated for a man your size

Me = I know and that's okay

Him = I can show you someing that will work for you, and I;m sure you can find a good rigging setup

Me = Thank you, no, I don't climb.

Him = *confused* I hope you aren't spending this much on this for tie downs

Me = Well in a way I am but I'm Tying down very Precious Cargo *Snicker*

Him = I can show you more durable rope that will be better for this purpose just as strong and will be close to 1/4 the cost

Me = No that is what I want, thank you.

(This is when my girl at the time walked up with a few ratchet connections and asked if we could get them)

Him = I'm sorry I thought you said you didn't climb.

Me = No this is my Cargo. (I said as I pointed to the girl)

Him = ...............uh......okay.

Me = (Just to be a Dick) Do you guys have a wedding registry?

Best fun I ever had buying rope.
