Why is it, males who have red hair are the butt of people's jokes, yet women who have red hair are so desirable by many?

I always thought it was just the gingers that people made fun of.

Kirren -> RE: Red hair (3/27/2008 11:42:48 PM)

I change My hair color from red to black constantly....I think that red is the color of passion...and with women they tend to get more of an auburn or copper tone. Men, who often get the better eye lashes and nicer butts, tend to get carrot tops.

Such is life. But if you toss a lil ash in there...and yes there is an ash rinse that you can get or have your hair dresser do, then it will tone down the brassiness...

GreedyTop -> RE: Red hair (3/27/2008 11:44:09 PM)

I like certain shades of red on men.. but that comedian, Carrottop, really ruined that particular shade for me :(

Aneirin, probably because they are women? lol...

Red hair ladies on the back of an old Brit bike is the hottest thing around. Richard Thompson wrote a song about such a combination in 1952 Vincent Black Lightning http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxKTzwaEa2o

'Red hair on black leather
my favourite colour scheme'

I was fortunate to have such an experience with a beautiful red head called Maggie back in 1972. And boy oh boy, it was wonderful to check she had matching colour and cuffs during a ride through the Peak District and have her running naked across the boulders near Ranmoor.

Lashra -> RE: Red hair (3/28/2008 5:21:00 AM)

I've often wondered myself why red haired guys get such a hard time. I think it looks attractive (well depending upon the shade of course). With that said, I took a ribbing as a child for having red hair. "Red head, red head, ten cent cabbage head". I've yet to figure out what that lil diddy actually means...

RCdc -> RE: Red hair (3/28/2008 5:25:04 AM)

My reply is going to be a generalisation.
Because women know how to work with what they have and men don't.  Natural red heads have skin problems or very light skin due to pigment and so freckles can show also.
Women get to wear make up, they work with colour both in clothing and adding highlights to hair.
Men do not bother.
Red head men have the best eyes and lashes, that is very true.  Very attractive because they look larger.  If you meet a man with red hair who knows how to work with it, he will always be highly desirable.

on the plus side of being a red head...we have a higher pain tolorance and a stronger immune system.

Sir, our offspring and myself are all redheads. We are often called The Brain Rust Brigade.

kittinSol -> RE: Red hair (3/28/2008 5:55:22 AM)

Red hair is relatively rare (1 to 2% of the human population), and as you know too well, people don't like rarity and differences. So if a person sticks out from the mass for any reason (red hair, skin colour, language, take your pick) they'll be more likely to be the butt of the group's jokes.

This is why I abhor group philosophy.

Ever heard the term “redheaded step-child” used in a positive association? “Ill beat you like a redheaded stepchild”. This phrase was born out of the American south and implies the status of illegitimate offspring with a white master.

One of our favorite shows, South Park, included in their episode about “Gingers” the stereotypes that red-headed kids are just plain weird and “without souls”.

At St. Paul’s cathedral in London, figurines tell the story of the fall in the Garden of Eden. Adam points one hand to the forbidden fruit and the other to a golden haired Eve. Then the arch angel drives them from the garden. Adam with his fig leaf loops his arm around Eve who is now cowering and sporting a main of long red hair.

Similarly in the paintings of the Sistine Chapel in 1874, Michelangelo’s Temptation depicts a brown haired Eve being handed a red apple by a red headed bare breasted serpent woman (Satan manifested as woman of course carries red hair). In the adjacent fresco Eve is thrown out of the garden with a shameful face and a twist of red hair.

Eves’ red hair is seen as the stain of sin like the original scarlet letter. Later her son, Cain, will bare the red hair and also a fall from grace.

Belief that redheads are witches is a folk belief in Germanic culture. From 1483-1784 thousands of suspected witches were nearly always stripped and searched for “marks of the devil”. These included any “abnormality” such as freckles, moles, warts, and birthmarks. Red hair was certainly considered an abnormality. Considering the freckle factor for redheads this was a deadly and shocking horror. Somewhere around 45,000 women were tortured and murdered usually by burning at the stake or by drowning.

In central Africa’s Cameroon redheaded albinos, called Nguenguerous, are believed also to come by this color by menstrual intercourse. The UN and other world organizations have studied and advocated for their rights as there have been allegations of the ritual murders in some regions of Africa.

Personally, this slave has met people who ranged from wanting to have nothing to do with her, BASED on her hair color and the belief of negative stereotypes associated with it to folks who just wanted to get down her pants to see if it was “true what they say about redheads, y’know, red-on-the-head-fire-in-the-hole” to folks with a serial redhead FETISH.

Yeah I have gotten the whole Red Head stereotypes myself... Does the rug match the drapes? Is it true what they say about you all? Are all of you crazy,mean,passionate... ( insert comment here)

and the poor Gingers.. oofhda. I think South Park hit apon something there. Those poor kids got picked on alot.

My brother is a Carrot Top.. ( that is what we called him long before that guy did stand up) actualy he is a true Ginger. He was picked on a lot in school... and a bit ackward... ( he did have the greatest hair.. the stuff was softer and better taken care of then mine at one time) after high school he was chased after by women.. but in school not so much. I think once he got his confidance he had it made.. and he made the best of it.
I started coloring my hair at 15. ( to a lighter red.. I am a Chestnut with red highlights orig. ) That seemed to make my brother feel a bit better too. I was making a choice to be more like him.

I find men with red hair interesting and it depends on the whole package. never has a hair color on a male thrown me off.

Now Blonde women... I tend to stay away from.. in rare cases will I be seriously attracted to one. ( If I am not firends first kinda thing) They generaly do not trip my trigger.

*snicker*

GreedyTop -> RE: Red hair (3/28/2008 7:11:48 AM)

my hair has gone through several (natural) colors throughout my life.  I was born white blonde.  as I got older, it went to dirty blonde, light chestnut, dark chestnut, dark chestnut w/ red, and dark auburn.  I think it's more of a dark brown now (although I tend to keep it colored dark auburn).
As kittin said, kids will pick on anyone perceived as different.
I have a hereditary bone thing. called 'nail patella syndrome' .. visibly different (NPS).  I hated school - and any self esteem issues I have stem from my school years. Fortunately, my NPS isn't as extreme as it could be (no webbing at the elbows, I can walk flat-footed instead of tiptoe).

oops.. sorry..Kittin's comments sent me off on this tangent..

back to your regularly scheduled thread!
