Freakin' Craigslist is going to be the death of me, i swear...

i acquired three 3' x 3' x 6" concrete slabs.

i just spent two and a half hours moving one of them from the back of my truck, down the side of the house, around to the back, and down underneath the deck. There are still two more in the back of the truck.

All so i can have a solid spot to park my riding mower, which currently doesn't run (it, sadly, was not free)

Do i need to mention that concrete slabs of that size weigh about 600 lbs? Big fun.

So, i don't really expect anyone to come up with something quite that stupid, but surely i can't be the only one seduced past the point of reason by free stuff?

I have a weakness for beads. And little company logo keychains and pens and nicknacks, and lame strip club calenders.

I used to, but my wife is such an accumulator of useless crap that I steer clear of gathering in more stuff myself.

When I was very poor I used to feel it was my obligation to take every free thing that was offered.

Now, I try to determine if there is any possible usefullness to either myself or someone I know before I accept, or grab. I hate clutter.

Come alongs aren't that expensive. A tool rental place could rent you an electric winch. Or two six packs of beer and three buddies!

i have 4 kids who go through play clothes like they were water.  someone's always tearing the hell out of something or losing something.  i belong to a group of local ladies who freecycle who pass stuff like that around.  one lady is expecting twins in august, she's getting all our baby stuff.  why toss it out if someone can use something you have that's in decent shape?  and why not recycle what someone else doesn't need anymore.  those slabs would have made a nice spot in my driveway to park my truck, lol!

so i get vegis and bread sometimes.
craigslist things? i found a whole living room set complete with tv hutch, side hutch,
couch, chair, writing table & chair, end table, and a matching dressor and mirror for $450-
i love cl!
i probably have as many keychains as i have purses and shoes!
as for a monitor, an old roommate had one, so we collected alot of mice,
omg the day that thing got loose in the house!!!!!

I live off craigslist- got a pool table, sofa, desk and chair. Although I paid for all that, I have given furniture away through cl. It made me feel good to know my dining table and chairs were going to a single mom rather than the landfill.

I've found gigs and jobs on cl, too. Recently found a private fetish party in our area, too. Can't wait to go.

As for the original question- collecting things is something I've worked hard to get over. I used to have tons of stuff just because it was free and someone was giving it away. (I still have a ball python for that reason-not quite a 6 ft monitor, but same concept). After the ex left, I found myself de-cluttering like crazy. Yeah, Freudian as hell, I know. Now, I can't stand any clutter and I have cut the chotchkes (sp?) by about 90% in my house. It helps that the kids have grown past legos, too. lol.

Aye, but the rub is getting it down the side of the house (where the truck won't fit), around the corner, and under the deck (where there isn't enough clearance to use the engine crane that i used to lift it out of the truck).  i ended up lifting it with the engine crane, driving the truck out from underneath, manhandling my boat trailer under it, hauling it to the back of the house on the boat trailer (under dave power), then using gravity and levers to get the thing off the boat trailer at the far end.

Downside: i broke the taillights on my boat trailer, so my free concrete cost me $25

However, angelbluewingsz still has my sympathy... free animals are the gift that keeps on taking!

Ugh, Craigslist and Freecycle, damn them.  I have some goofy crap, but most of it didn't come from there.  My mom was a packrat and I'm trying to get out of that bad habit.  Most of the junk I still have came from getting things after she passed away that I have no use for and am paying through the nose for a storage unit that is enormous.

I'm thinking of acquiring some big, burly male subs and slaves this spring to help me go through and trash most of this stuff.

I think a recent freebie that had no use at all was a bunch of Papa Johns cups that we got at work that I really didn't need.
