Am I the only one who's noticed that people more and more often use the word "then" in place of than? Which is inappropriate grammer. And it's not just younger people. So much for education huh?

The worst abuse I notice is "your" when they mean "you're".
And then there is "there" for "they're" or "their".

And there is the always popular "could care less", rather than "couldn't".

Or "loose" instead of "lose".

Unless of course they meant "well I guess I could care less but I really don't think that's possible."

I attempt to be correct with my spelling and punctuation; but in a casual environment such as a forum, I've re-read something I've written (always after too late to edit) and go 'doh'!...slap my head and hope no one noticed it.
Now, when emailing a potential partner, (and when one emails me) I hold myself and others to higher expectations.
Also, you have to remember, we all come from different backgrounds and have different strengths and weaknesses. Unless someone is extreme with their mistakes, I generally try to ignore them.
Another thought; every time I post something similar to this thread, (such as...'look at what those other dummys do...but I'm sooo smart...) I do something that is even more stupid than the idea I was mocking...(it tends to bite me in the butt...)

Don't get me started!
  • affect vs. effect
  • assure vs. insure
  • "irregardless" is NEVER correct

I feel better now.

Agreed. Same here.

I'm not going "I'm soooo smart." No matter what merit an education might have with a potential partner or friend. It's just one of those things that 99.999% of the general public posting on these forums have been taught. Appropriate and correct grammar DO count.

Well, your options are to educate a very large public, ignore the ones who don't follow the rules, or not read forums at all.
Of course, some of the greatest writers break a lot of rules. And yes, I do realize you must know the rules before attempting to break them, but it's still a fact.
Honestly, not everyone had the same educational advantages you did.
Some teachers are there to get a paycheck, and move the children through the system as quickly as possible; education is only a concept to them.
(Most, of course, are not, but it has been known to happen.)

blushes - I notice. I always notice, but I don't say anything anymore. I just figure out what they mean and let it go. I know that people haven't learned the difference between ensure and insure, so I mentally replace  the incorrect word with the correct one and move on. It's too trivial to let it bother me in a place like these forums. If my boss were to hand me a letter that contained egregious errors, however, he'd hear from me!

It's OK to bend grammar rules a little in order not to get yourself into an awkward construction. Regard the statement incorrectly ascribed to Winston Churchill: That is the sort of arrant pedantry up with which I will not put. There is a difference between correct grammar and
proper grammar.

*lol* I used to have a boss who got very upset when someone ended a sentence with a preposition. So, instead of saying "Where's it at?" I'd say, "Where's it at, dude?"
and then run.
*g*

Yes, I do find it somewhat annoying when people use poor grammar and spell incorrectly (myself included, at times), but the risk one takes when criticizing others for this is if the critic has errors within his/her critique:

Which is inappropriate grammar is not a grammatically appropriate sentence.

grammer = grammar

So much for education (insert comma), huh?

Or put the period outside of the quotation marks...

I'm a grammar asshole...
