What's even worse is when I read these spelling/grammar pet peeve threads and realize I've been doing something wrong all along, as in definately vs. definitely.

Lately I've notice that "whom" is being misused a lot. People whom misuse the word "whom" are very irritating to people for whom grammar is a calling.

Appropriate and correct grammar DO count.

Shouldn't that be, "appropriate and correct grammar DOES count" since the noun phrase is singular?

When I am in areas where I am not being graded, or hired because of my grammar usage (like chat rooms, forums, e-mails to friends, and anything else) all the rules fly out the window.  Why?  'Cuz here, I really dont care about the grammar if I am posting something before running off to handle something else.  I do, however, tend to check my spelling compulsively.

If this was a paper for a class, or resume/business letter, I would do my best to make sure everything is damn near close to perfect.

I'm not going "I'm soooo smart." No matter what merit an education might have with a potential partner or friend, it's just one of those things that 99.999% of the general public posting on these forums has been taught. Appropriate and correct grammar DOES count.

That's true, CaliChick.  Correction is good; but understanding the correction is better.

1.  Yes - a comma is needed to join a dependent clause with an independent phrase.
2.  If some 'thing' has been taught, the subject is singular.  If some 'things' have been taught, the subject is plural. (To see which one applies, you have to re-read the original post.)
3.  Singular vs. plural subject and verb agreements are one of the most difficult aspects of English grammar to master. ('Agreements are' is the sentence, everything else modifes/describes that subject and verb.)

Ok, now I'm just messing with y'all!

SL

(Edited to add:  Yes, I DO make mistakes; but I earn my living making sure grammar and spelling are correct.)

I never said I was perfect. I just have my own pet peeves. Besides, I'm always up for having my posts graded.
