Hunting and fishing are a big deal here.  I still love to fish, and I go every chance I get.  But I haven't hunted in many years.  It's just a pain in the ass now a days.  You have to generally join a bunch of other hunters in a lease for land to hunt on.  No one allows you to hunt on their land for free anymore.  I never was a deer hunter, so I never had to mess with tags.  Squirrel, rabbits, and various fowl are great to hunt but it's just not worth all the effort to me.

Yup! I do my part on the hunting end. However, I don't fish nearly as often as I used to. My reasons have nothing to do with a waning interest in the outdoors. I don't fish as much because I live in Michigan and I DO read the DNR fish advisories. There really aren't many places left here that have fish that are safe to consume. Not much point in fishing if you can't eat what you catch. Sure, there is catch and release but I believe that you shouldn't kill something you aren't going to eat....and even when you are careful fish die.

Michigan here as well.  It's one of the reasons I steer clear of the great lakes fish for the most part.  But there are stream and smaller lake fish which are still safe.

Young people learn to hunt and fish from their fathers and grandfathers. Divorced men don't teach these skills. My ex fished, he never bothered to take my son. My son's been a few times with friends when their fathers let him tag along. He'd go a lot more if he had someone to take him. I can't because I don't know how.

My son's both learned to hunt and fish from me. I refused to allow them to think that the meat on their table came at no cost other than a price sticker in a meat market.

I think I love you.

Really?  This is news to me.  Seems like every sub who replies to me has hunting, fishing, camping, etc. as things he "lives for" in his profile, while I detest them and list them as hard limits.

Ready for this one?
OK, New Mexico has 3 of 5 species of turkey, oryx, javalina, whitetail/mule deer, and the largest elk herds in north america, plus multitues of other species of critters to kill, unfortunately the last grizzly was killed in the state back in 1930's.
Fishing, well, salmon, trout, bass, theres also a mutiltude of fishies here too, since we are the 5th largest state, and game is plentiful, there is also the Rio Grande wildlife corridore, and wildlife rufuge, lots of migratory birds.
We are also 5th in water in the state.
Was reading in my NRA hunter mag that this was happening.

I, for one, never allow water near my 5th.

In 1970 there were no wild turkey left in NY state. The state bought some and paid farmer's around the state to raise them. A friend's father was one of those farmers. Today they are in very healthy numbers but still rather sneaky in their habits. The only place I know to always find them is in the horse's paddock, where they pick up loose grain. And we don't allow hunting near the horses.

DomKen -> RE: "Interest in hunting, fishing dropping" (3/31/2008 9:02:28 PM)

Turkey in the wild are pretty sneaky except during mating season when the toms put on their shows for the hens.

Once it warms up I get out fishing at least over 100 times. I am a God. It's true...I am a lakefront icon. I spend way to much money and time pursuing this addiction.

I have yet to figure out a way to garnish some pussy from this hobby of mine. Which sickens me.

Drop the fish on the ground and wait...

Oh wait, you probably meant the two legged variety. Sorry bud, you're on your own here. I try to avoid the girls who think my fingers smelling like worms and fish guts is sexy.

Other than fishing, hunting is damn expensive with bullets, guns, licenses (around 150 for a deer in minnesota) and duck stamps and whatnot.

more interactive than xbox tho, I agree.

Ron

ou day it tis!  most around here dont hunt or fish any more for the very same reasons.  When you can buy a side of beef cheaper than hunting may as well stick to punching holes in paper.

Loss of revenue? to bad.  If the dnr operated more like the mnr we might have better fishing.

Wild Turkey's not bad...but my preference will still always be for Crown Royal.

You need to work on the culinary skills and prepare the freshly caught fish.  A man who can cook a great meal is very attractive, especially when wearing only an apron and a smile.

Might I suggest some fresh parsley and a nice lemon dill sauce?

Or did you mean garner?
