Allons enfants de la Patrie,
Arise, children of the Motherland

Le jour de gloire est arrivé !
The day of glory has arrived!

Contre nous de la tyrannie,
Against us, tyranny's

L'étendard sanglant est levé. (bis)
Bloody banner is raised. (repeat)

Entendez-vous dans les campagnes
Do you hear in the countryside

Mugir ces féroces soldats ?
The braying of these ferocious soldiers?

Ils viennent jusque dans nos bras
They are coming into our midst

Égorger nos fils, nos compagnes !
To cut the throats of our sons, our wives!

Aux armes, citoyens !
To arms, citizens!

Formez vos bataillons !
Form your battalions!

Marchons, marchons !
March, march!

Qu'un sang impur
May tainted blood

Abreuve nos sillons !

Formons nos bataillons !
Let us form our battalions!

Marchons, marchons !
Let us march, let us march!

Nous entrerons dans la carrière
We shall enter the career

Quand nos aînés n'y seront plus
When our elders will no longer be there

Nous y trouverons leur poussière
There we shall find their dust

Et la trace de leurs vertus (bis)
And the mark of their virtues (repeat)

Bien moins jaloux de leur survivre
Much less jealous of surviving them

Que de partager leur cercueil,
Than of sharing their coffins,

Nous aurons le sublime orgueil
We shall have the sublime pride

De les venger ou de les suivre !
Of avenging or following them!

The French national anthem - see how bloody and murderous it sounds? I'm just trying to show you that jingoism isn't an exclusively British or American bastion  .

Its only been on British coins since 1672.  Roman coins, by definition, are not British.  Close PS, but no cigar.

As  for the song, I think I've found something much better, one which will unite rather than divide:

Rock me rock me rock me rock me Amadeus
Rock me all the time to the top

Er war ein Punker
Und er lebte in der großen Stadt
Es war Wien, war Vienna
Wo er alles tat
Er hatte Schulden denn er trank
Doch ihn liebten alle Frauen
Und jede rief:
Come on and rock me Amadeus

Er war Superstar
Er war populär
Er war so exaltiert
Because er hatte Flair
Er war ein Virtuose
War ein Rockidol
Und alles rief:
Come on and rock me Amadeus

Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, oh oh oh Amadeus

Come on and rock me Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, oh oh oh Amadeus

Es war um 1780
Und es war in Wien
No plastic money anymore
Die Banken gegen ihn
Woher die Schulden kamen
War wohl jedermann bekannt
Er war ein Mann der Frauen
Frauen liebten seinen Punk

Er war Superstar
Er war so populär
Er war so exaltiert
Genau das war sein Flair
Er war ein Virtuose
War ein Rockidol
Und alles ruft noch heute:
Come on and rock me Amadeus

Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, oh oh oh Amadeus

Come and rock me Amadeus....

Baby baby do it to me rock me
Baby baby do it to me rock me
Baby baby do it to me rock me
Jae ja ja
Baby baby do it to me rock me
Baby baby do it to me rock me
Baby baby do it to me rock me

Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, oh oh oh Amadeus

You DO realise how uncharmingly xenophobic, trumpetingly superior the above quotes are, right? Right?! They would be funny, if they weren't so tragic  .

Kitten, I bet Hitler and his U-Boat Captains HATED that song too!

Oui, mais Hitler est mort il y a longtemps. Time to move on, know what I mean?

Gainsbourg (of Je t'aime, moi non plus fame did a reggae version of La Marseillaise Aux Armes, etc. It fucking well rocked, but strangely, it was nearly banned. Strange, non?

No evidence that Boudicca was the roman depictation of Britannia, why not, when there existed coins with the face of Vercingetorix on Roman coins. Vercingetorix was a Gaulish leader who also rose against the Romans.

The lack of evidence is not a measure of somethings absence and sometimes, the seeking of evidence can make one blind to other possibilities, scholars and scientists have been known to be wrong.

The image of Britannia, maybe had it's origins in Roman Britain, coins minted by the then Hadrian depicted the warrior woman, some say as a tribute to Britains greatest war leader, Boudicca. A woman who under oppression united many of the tribes of Britain and very nearly succeeded in ridding the country of the Roman invader.

Britannia has always been the symbol of britain, but maybe she is under attack. Not long ago a minister criticised the singing of 'Rule Britannia' at the momentous occaision of 'Last night at the Proms' at the Albert hall, in case it upset others who call this country home.

Now She has disappeared from our coinage, is this an exercise in remodelling of our country, what do others think?

And if "others" call that country home why would they be "upset" by the song?
If they are kick them in the arse and send them packing!
It sounds to me like "political correctness" rearing it's evil head again.
And how would a minister actually "know" if it "upset" someone in the Albert Hall?
So, if 3,500 people liked the song but 3 people were "upset" with it what would this minister do?
I know what I'd do.

It was written as a rallying song by the rather bourgois Rouget de L'Isle - you're quite correct that it was sung by men from Marseille (hence the name) as they marched upon Paris (circa 1792). Its horribly bloody lyrics, and hideous melody, have made it a favorite among the extreme right and the national front in France.

I much prefer Gainsbourg's version: here is the link again Aux Armes et caetera . It MUST be checked out :-) .

Yeah well if the revolutionaries had sung Je T`aime, Louis the whatever number would still be in power.

It is interesting to see the last night at the proms, not only are patriots there with their flags, but also flags of many other nationalities, all singing the same.

I would agree, the loss of Britannia is an exercise in political correctness, something created for the perceived fear of offending someone, quite often a minority. Small people with big mouths who enjoy using our essence of fair play against us. Honestly, never mind any invading force, we are our own worst enemy, just how far will we go before we wake up.

What happened to democracy

Considering the King (Louis XVIth, by the way) was replaced by an emperor (Napo le nabot), it might not have been a bad thing  .

That's how to stop something, have "the govt" tell people that they can't do something!
It's worked great in this country for booze in the 1920's and Pot now!

Oh yeah, Marianne not Arriane! Thought it sounded a bit fucked!

Truth is, they've been striking alternative 50 pence coins for ages (the only one that has Britannia on) and only a simpleton would believe that any meaningful sense of nationhood is tied up in an image on one coin.  Changing to the Euro maybe, not changing a picture on a 50 pence piece.

The Gainsbourg thing is pretty good but not his best.  I still like Bonnie and Clyde but sadly, my French is hopeless so I never can get the lyrics.

Re. Vercingetorix - he was the recognised King of a vast and vastly important province to the Romans.  There was actually enough cachet in his title that he was kept alive to be paraded before the citizens of Rome, hence a commemorative coin.  Boudicca was a very minor figure by comparison, chieftain to a small part of an insignificant backwater - Britain.

Again - there isn't a link between her and Britannia, who was in any case only adopted as a symbol over 1500 years after she was snuffed out.

How sad that fervent patriots can't come up with anything worthwhile to rally around, something that actually stirs a bit of feeling.  How come they could come up with this emblem in 1672 but no-one seems able to do so now?  A poverty of ideas, I think.

It's because patriosim is a poor idea in times of peace. It only makes remote sense during times of (real) conflict. But I will give you that at least, patriotism is a reasonably honourable sentiment... Just about...

It's stupid senseless nationalism that I will ridicule until my last breath. This grotesque posturing in the name of a fucking country... makes me sick  .

RL, the Romans only came because they heard Londinium was paved with streets of gold, and that they could all claim housing benefit !!

Anyhow, what did the Romans ever do for us ?
