Most of us like to think we're not particularly nationalistic and can point to various reasons; yet, I've never heard any national anthem sung with the enthusiam afforded to British anthems at sporting events.....

Maybe so, but why are they sung with such enthusiasm by British sporting fans?

It's the desperate need to belong that makes people sing the national tune so fiercely. People feel stronger in groups - the pull of the crowd.

It's like nested eggs. You start with the team, extend your allegiance to the city, the region, the country... and you feel more powerful than if you stood alone.

Phil Neville wasn't too enthusiastic was he?
Wayne Rooney was just a bit confused I expect lol. Couldnt wait to kick something or somebody or maybe read them a poem, expletives deleted of course.

Our National Anthem is an embarrasing dirge IMO.

Status: offline 		The odd orgy of nationalism is inevitable and as long as that is as far as it goes, I see nothing wrong with it.  I was dating a Norwegian girl during Euro 96, an outwardly demure and reserved person, writing her doctorate over here.  We watched Norway against (I think) the Netherlands in a pub and suddenly, she's on her feet roaring out the national anthem, completely blowing the whole ice maiden image.

I think it's usually totally harmless and I can't think of a country which has nothing similar, not one.

What is really sad - and what I think you may be getting at - is what's called the hijacking of the anthem by the scumbags of the far right.  My own belief is that the best cure for this is for self-respecting people to continue to enjoy their anthems - and who doesn't enjoy a bit of a sing-song? - don't take the antique sentiments too much to heart and ignore those inadequates who want to make something divisive of a ritual that has permanently and irrevocably evolved.

Possibly, but this doesn't explain why British sporting fans are peculiarly enthusiastic when it comes to singing the national anthem.

Status: offline 		I agree with RL, theres nothing wrong with a bit of national pride at sporting events. The main problem with the anthem is it`s dire. Billy Connolly had the right idea.

Status: offline 		They're sporting occasions where supporting your country is like supporting your home town team. I've no problem with it as long as it remains in sports stadiums. Its pointless watching a sporting event if one is impartial, one doesn't go to sport to  entertained, one goes for the ritual.

Status: offline 		Get some men running around kicking a ball and suddenly we are all proud of our country, it is the only time that we are though, flags and war paint and songs and all that, but that doesnt really equate to national pride to me, maybe its more to do with the drinking culture in England and us all being so pissed we simply have to sing three lions at the top of our voice. Maybe its unity with friends rather than love of our country. Also the English anthem is easier to remember lol but from experiance the Welsh LOVE their anthem, during the rugby there were about 5 programs about it on the telly, in fact welsh telly is full of national pride too. I love the Welsh anthem myself, its one of the only other ones I sing with the same gusto as ours.

I think its sad we dont feel it as much as other places, I lived in Wales for three years and worked in an Irish bar for a year, paddys day and st davids day were so celebrated, whats the English one again?

Status: offline 		All I know is when I watch F1 ours lasts about 20 seconds and the damn Italian one goes on for two hours. Then just when you think it is going to end it starts over. I like the anthem short and sweet most people don’t know all the words for the whole thing anyway.

Most English will be more likely to know St Georges day than either St Davids day or St Andrews day. It is starting to be celebrated much more recently than before. Its also the day that Shakespeare was born on, and also died on. I`m not smart, i just know this as its also my birthday

Councils thinking like this dont help the matter either. There are tons of similar stories.

Status: offline 		Its sad that our flag has come to mean 'slob like drunked shouty violent lout' to other nations but it has and therefore we detach ourselves from it. Also I think that we have a lot of catholicesque guilt, we view ourselves as having a shitty past (which we did, but seriously the majority of countries have done many things to others that are shitty but dont seem half as guilty) and therefore we dont allow oursleves to be as proud. Im sure there are many other reasons for it, our fall from superpower post WW2 and that we run to help the US at any opportunity when everyone else is telling them to bugger off. Sorry that sounds all a bit harsh, but it really makes me sad, I love England aside from some of the unsavory things we have done we have a lot to be proud of.

That is precisely why I hate sports - it's just like going to church except that one is supposed to worship other men's bodies and their physical achievements instead of contemplating a mythical figure like Jesus.

I have to disagree, MC; one can watch sports impartially (as far as the teams go), just to see the skill of the atheletes involved.
