McCain had made a similar concession in South Carolina – following his earlier bid for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000, conceding that he believed the state should pull the Confederate Flag from atop its capitol and acknowledging that he hadn’t had the guts to say so in the heat of the South Carolina primary.

He gets a tip of the hat for doing it, though. Not a lot of folks own up to their screw-ups, or not nearly enough do.

Level, I admire you for your capacity to see the good in everybody. You make me ashamed of my cynicism in moments like this.

Then, I think about it again and I'm even more convinced that Fries McCain's timing is little more than shameless demagogy  .

Status: offline 		What's his defense though..."Oh I thought Dr.King was a dick...but it turns out I was misinformed??? i mean that's a pretty big eff up.  Even if he didn't BELIEVE it...it's pretty much ok to say "Martin Luther King...good."  Let's see ... "Hitler...bad" without having to re-evaluate anything. One doesn't have to study much to find that out.  i have said it before...i like McCain.  Nothing against the guy...but i always thought it was an embarrassment that it took so long for AZ to admit Dr.King deserved some special honor for his contribution to America.  It's like a smack in the face...or saying "Well, we kinda preferred segregation, and Jim Crow, and denying civil rights to all Americans" without actually having to SAY it.  It may not have been the spirit of his actions...but it could easily be implied by his actions.

I will admit that the possibility of you being right about this exists, kittin  but I do have the feeling he means it. He doesn't come across like a Jimmy Swaggart, boo-hooing and mea culpaing like a bad soap opera actor.
 
And where does "Fries" come from?

Ah, but tulip, when did he ever call Dr. King a dick? I don't believe you're saying he literally did that, but even equating that with his actions is wrong, IMO.
 
Now..... why did he oppose it? I don't have an answer, and I don't like that he did, or that it took him forever to get his head out of his posterior on the matter. I have a hunch McCain will hope this all quietly goes away.....

Status: offline 		When McCain was against MLK Day, he was pandering to his conticuency at the time. Now he's courting another consticuency, so he changes his tune. He has a history of doimg this. And I, for one, will never forget that he was one of the Keating Five. Not so long ago, but everyone seems to have forgotten. At the time, it was the worst banking scandal in history. Many folks lost their savings.  and jobs. Keating got a slap on the wrist. McCain is just another lying pol. I don't believe his "sincerity" for a minute.

He's certainly had  his share of bad acts, Cjan, but overall, I like him. I just don't want him to win come November, if he's running against Obama.

Status: offline 		I think actually going to the place where King was assassinated was a bit over the top. That aside this is, from a strategic point of view, absolutely brilliant. As we get closer and closer to the election each side will trump up the defamation – based on both real and imagines faults – to discredit the other side (in other words, normal American politics). McCain’s opposition to the King Holiday is a natural one to pull out against him, especially if Obama wins the nomination. In fact, I’ve not heard any organized criticism of him for it at all during the election season so far. Could it be that somebody decided to hold off on it? Wait until the election drew closer when painting McCain as a racist would carry greater impact? Well, that won’t happen now. McCain has shot it in the foot. By the time the election rolls around it will be old news.

Oh, I don’t doubt that they’ll bring it out anyway (especially if things aren’t going well for them and they start getting desperate) but it won’t do the damage it might have done otherwise. It will have lost its sting, and I don’t think it will go anywhere.

Status: offline 		i don't think of him as a racist...i thought of his actions as being incredibly insensitive....but not racist.  People seem to think black people go around shouting "racist!" at anyone whose opinon differs from Al Sharpton's.  Just so you know...Al Sharpton and those of his ilk don't represent the black consciousness.  They are loud and on television daily, using the race card at every given  moment...but they aren't "Black America". They may be the voice you hear at Jena Six rallies (and yes, having a voice at times is necessary...crucial, even)...but just as Pat Buchanan isn't the voice of  "White America"  Neither does Al Sharpton speak for all African-Americans.   In reality, most African-Americans that i know try to be very careful about calling someone a racist.  The aftermath is more bullcrap than most want to deal with.  And pretty damned hard to prove.
