AlphaJ -> What kind of ropes do you like to use? (4/6/2008 6:39:04 AM)

I've been practicing shibari for a little bit now.  I use a nice soft boating rope and have been looking at hemp.  The boating rope is strong with just enough give to not cut circulation, and has a really high burn speed (which surprised me somewhat) but the hemp just has that really nice visual and olfactory appeal.  What kinds of rope do you use and why?

Treated hemp, because it looks nice. Also, I've been told it can be sanitized by hanging it out in the sun for a bit, which is nice. Hemp will also bite into itself, making the knots and twists stay put, better than nylon or cotton, which is kind of slippery.

a white nylon rope with a satin look to it. We don't necessarily practice shibari but it's smooth enough that the knots release quickly if need be.

Evility -> RE: What kind of ropes do you like to use? (4/6/2008 7:36:51 AM)

I don't do any suspension type shibari with it but I like the "arms crossed behind the back" look with lots of rope that you often see in shibari. I use plain old Multi Filament Polypropylene (MFP) Rope. I have several hundred feet in black and blue. I also have a bunch of heavier white poly rope I bought at Home Depot years ago. It's a little too large for close in rope work but works well to tether leather cuffs to the four corners of a bed. I think I even have a few hanks of old cotton clothesline in the bottom of my toybox.

Can you recommend a good source of hemp, in a variety of lengths and colours?

Thanks!

I havent touched my Synthetic rope since I bought some treated hemp.  Its so much fun to play with.  I have some from twisted monk and some from a guy who twists it locally.  The "more than curious" kit off of twisted monks site is one of the best deals you can get.  120' for 100 bucks, just specify on the order if you dont want exactly what comes in the kit.  I would sugest 3 30's and 2 15's to start with, all 6mm.

I love the Twisted Monk for hemp.  Very good quality, very good to work with and good prices.

Heh, what SNoB said is exactly right. Twisted Monk is good stuff, I've also heard of people buying regular hemp rope, then boiling and "oil burning" it... I don't have a kitchen, so that's not an option for me. I'm pretty sure Monk has a few different colors of hemp as well.

It can't be sanitized by hanging it out in the sun.  The good thing is you can avoid getting body fluids on it by watching where you tie it and using barriers on the risky spots... or just have one set of line for each submissive.  It isn't that expensive.

Ya, I was kind of suspicious when I was told that. The guy said a surgeon told him though, so it might have some merit. Not sterilized of course, but the UV rays are bad for a lot of little microorganisms and such. It'd be interesting to do a test and see what the results are.

MladyHathor -> RE: What kind of ropes do you like to use? (4/6/2008 9:43:08 AM)

chains,  ropes take too much planning, too much room, and chains can be used quickly--click click--hot/cold---fast--smiles--mmm chains

Well, you can put hemp in a washing machine, its not a big deal.  Monk even says to use color safe bleach.  The thing about the sun killing bacteria and viruses is true, ive been told to do that with floggers since there is no real way to clean them properly.  From using simple logic though I dont think this would kill anything nasty that soaked into the core of the rope.

As far as buying a new rope for each bottom, lets say you use a 30 foot length for a crotch rope, for each bottom.  All other ropes being used on each one, thats still an additional 30 bucks per rope bottom you play with, adds up fast.

Sirsinini -> RE: What kind of ropes do you like to use? (4/6/2008 10:53:13 AM)

Many millions of people around the world use the sun's heat to "sanitize."  I am not sure where Mr. Warren get's the idea it doesnt work.  It does.  Been there, done it and it is not only better than fabreeze, but the tempurature is the most important part.

A flat sun baked rock with 12 hrs of sun heat over 90 degrees will do it any time.  I guess in Zimbabwe I've learned all those things Americans think are totally impossible.

GREAT THREAD !!

One, it's not _Mr._ Warren.  Second, it isn't an idea.  I doesn't work.  It may kill some organisms but others like hep aren't touched at all.  Oh, and I suppose the death rate in Zimbabwe from infection is really really low.

If you can't WASH the rope in bleach..then buy SEPERATE rope for each play partner. Sheesh

Emperor1956 -> RE: What kind of ropes do you like to use? (4/6/2008 11:40:59 AM)

FR:  Before we all get carried away with fluid / blood borne infection risks and rope play, lets remember that "sanitize" is a pretty loosely used word.  I don't think the OP meant "Sterile to a degree akin to an autoclave"; I also don't think hanging ropes outside in the sunshine is a bad thing.  Its "SAFER" sex, not "safe", remember?   And when you can answer this at a zero risk level, then I'd worry about ropes.

On topic:  For rope dresses and breast bondage, I'm an old school kinda guy -- I use conditioned American cotton clothesline I've had for years.  I know how it reacts, I know how I like to use it.  Yes...on some strands I even know exactly when THAT stain got there, who and why.  Its a sort of scrapbook of fond memories *GRIN*  (oh, and I tend to use new rope for each submissive, and keep that rope for each subsequent encounter).

For shibari style bondage, I have become enamored with the 4 -strand hemp rope I got from Italy recently.  I think its the same as Twisted Monk's "Barvarian Blonde" -- and frankly his prices are good and his whipstitching is superlative to mine.  So buy it from him!  (As an aside, do any of you realize how cool it is to have purveyors of rope like The Monk and others?   Back in the day I had to find it, buy it, boil it, condition it, whip it, oil it... and then I had to find some charming person to let me tie them up with it!  ...and I walked 5 miles uphill to school both ways, too.  But I digress....)

And finally...yes, sometimes chains are fun.  Leather cuffs are fun.  NO restraint other than My command is fun.  But the issue isn't "Rope vs. chain" Lady H:  The issue is which tool do you want for the job at hand?

E.

Evidently, that's too expensive for some folks

Master uses non poly nylon rope from the hardware store it is much cheaper than buying bondage rope from a shop.
