The limits of a newbie are to be tested and expanded.  This is also true of an experienced sub/slave..........  that is why I always use a safe word.

use or have?

I hate it when there is over emphasis on safe words. They are not fail safes. They are not there to prevent damage from ever happening. They are there to limit damage from after the point it begins. Safe words are the responsibility of the person who needs to use them.

I see very very often that newbies are given the misinformation that safe words are the end all be all. And it's simply not true.
