I say this every time I see something like this, but...

Most published research findings are false; one of the primary reasons is that they tend to mirror social bias, and that later turns out to be a result of how the experiment was designed (by people with such biases, even unconsciously).

I remain highly skeptical.

While I don't entirely buy the simple left right split there is some truth to the typifications made in the study.

I don't know that the left right divide is a predictor of white collar criminality but I do think that our adversarial models of government, justice and management filter for the Machiavellian nut bars and the higher up the pile they climb the more likely they are to be seriously twisted. This is why our present system of candidate selection is so screwed - the people who want the job the most are the very ones who should NOT have it and the ones most likely to get it.

Personally, I think our governments should be formed from citizens selected at random from the same list we get jurors from. If we have the chops to sit in judgment of each other in court - we ought to be able to run a country with a little trial and error (and some compassion).

I don't generally put much stock in these sorts of things ... they are generally written to make money for stockholders.

But ... I do fit in the liberal flip-flopper thing ... I flip-flop so much, I sometimes vote for Republicans.

Growing up I was a part of the generation that didn’t know the difference between left and right politics and I still have my doubts about it. I was one of those that fell for the third way which wasn’t really a third way at all. I was asking myself the other day if left and right matters as much as the competence of the government. Tory and Labour both have similar policies so it only really matters who is perceived to be the best at running the economy etc.

Ask anyone the difference between left and right in the UK and they’d struggle unless we are talking about the extremes. This is why no one votes for the Liberal Democrats because 1 it is a wasted vote and 2 they’ve never had any experience with running the country so no one wants to chance giving them a go.

The US is probably an entirely different kettle of fish.

Phony Blur was true to his name. He actually took the word 'socialist' out of the Labour party's manifesto, just so that they would be more acceptable to the chicken-shit electorate.

Still, on that fateful day of Labour's landslide victory in '97, we partied like maniacs - took the party over to Brockwell park and the rest is history.

97 was my first vote and to be honest all I really wanted was something different from what I had put up with for ten years and had no say in. I didn't really expect things to be that different. The band that had a hit with that song "Things can only get better." hates it every time they hear it now. I'm told.

These days I have to choose between Red Ken and Boris Johnson for the mayor of London. I noticed that one result of labour winning is more voting for who supervises my bin collections.

Might go for Boris just for the comedy factor.

Senior Labour figures say "labour MP's calling Boris 'Boris' and not 'Mr Johnson' should be punished because calling him 'Boris' makes him look like a popular celebrity type man of the people." That is how insidious the Labour party has become.

I think he is a very cunning politician, he plays the fool and everyone knows who he is because of it which is one of the main aims of a politician. It doesn't matter if he wins because like anyone he'll be employing advisors left right and centre to do the important decision making and people wonder why apathy is such a problem..

Z I actually like you because I love to see an intelligent type like yourself demonstrate that Liberals can be so totally and utterly wrong.I think you must be a Brit.

The gains that we benefit from today were not achieved by collective enterprise but by individual achievement. The inspired, the creative, the genius verging on the madman. Thems (sic) what did it.
When the collective gets control we steer steadfastly towards the shores of mediocrity and banal mindless egalitarianism or non judgemental PC Liberalism.

I agree we owe much to the past.
I agree that a compassionate society will offer support to the underprivileged and unfairly stricken such as those suffering from a debilitating disease or living in an area where traditional industry has collapsed.

I reject totally the idea that the lazy, the useless, the gormless, the scroungers across the whole social spectrum are in anyway deserving of support and if we carry on as we are they will drag everybody down to their natural level of inadequate hopelessness.
