Because my working week is so full and busy with work and commuting to a job that bores me to tears I LIVE for the weekends.

What I do on the weekends depends on the weather and if I have company or family obligations. I love having people come and stay, cooking great meals and enjoying good conversation. During the winter it doesn't happen much so things are much quieter.

If it is too cold, windy or rainy, being outdoors is not very pleasant. Those days I am often online and/or working on writing or photo projects. Usually doing some cooking and baking. Especially if travel is not in the plan. Sometimes I bring the grands, ages 4&5, down for all or part of the weekend. Exhausting but very fun.

If the weather is even halfway decent I will spend as much time outdoors as possible. Hiking, riding, gardening, ANYTHING to be outside and enjoying nature. Sometimes driving up to IowaCity for art fairs or music festivals.

Rarely do I go out at night. It has to be something really interesting to tempt me. I like the people watching but not the cigarette smoke. Plus, I am not a night owl.  I get up between 5 and 6 AM regardless of the day or what time I go to bed. I like getting 7-9 hours of sleep.

I've got lots of great people in my life. I feel very fortunate. My biggest grumble is never feeling like I have enough time to do everything I want.

I bailed on snowboarding today and slept until 2. I was sleepy. I also declined an invite to come out and play that came at 10:30 last night. I am so lame. What the hell is wrong with me? I am such an interweb dork. (She said to the other interweb dorks.) Now I am regretting both decisions, as I have had a very boring weekend indeed. Fail on me.

I spend most of my weekends alone.  I actually ventured out this Saturday and went to the horse track.  It was the last day of the season.  I lost 50 bucks.  I ran into a lot of people I know.  They all tried to get me to go bar hopping.  I always decline, because that really isn't my scene.  I feel awkward at bars.  I don't blend with that type of crowd.  I just prefer quiet on my weekends.  But I admit that I am lonely, and I know my friends are trying to get me out to meet people.  Am I wrong about that?  Should I go out more?

Slaveboyforyou, that is all too much of a familiar story, I can well relate to your situation. Sometimes it is harsh to be alone, but at these times I bury myself in craftwork, or sometimes out with my camera I do go, seeking a picture different in an area photographed so many times.

Bars, yes I would love to, but purposely I keep myself away, as funds are tight enough without drinking beer and giving it back.

Internet I have found to be my saviour, many others of strange and like interests have I found, those meetings online have come into reality and offline friends I do have, who themselves are like me, Comfort I have in my strange friends who don't feel the need to prop up a bar.

OP, a simple, but practical ,solution for you to consider. Get a dog. The cutest dog you can find. It must be a male dog and be sure he is not "fixed". Walk him where there is a lot of foot traffic. Park, crowded street with outdoor cafes, etc.

While you are getting some freash air and exercise ( as others have suggested) you have a chance to kill two birds with one stone, uh, so to speak.

Women cannot resist a cute doggie. They will stop, lean or squat down and make a huge fuss over the mutt. They will also assume you are a sensitive and emotionally available dude. (ok, maybe 3 birds). This is a great opportunity to engage the open hearted lady in conversation. Since the doggie is unfixed, with a little luck he may start to hump her leg. This is a great ice breaker !

This approach has the obvious advantages of not having to put up with obnoxious drunks, smokey joints, picking up bar tabs for chicks with a taste for champagne, etc. And, if you play your cards right, you may be home and in the sack with a new friend before sunset.

Best of Luck !

That place is a meat market if there ever was one. Affluent and lonely women abound. They've had cheese, coffee and something sweet most likely. They are ready...

It's sunny but cool and windy here today so I decided against taking a walk on the beach, I don't like sand blowing in my eyes.

Join a bike club, a runner's club, hiking club. Take an adult ed course like Thai Cooking, or How to Flirt, or anything else that interests you. Make new friends that like the same activities you do.

They key is to stay the hell away from bars!

Local community, maybe?
Science Fiction conventions?
Library book sales?
Going antiquing?
Taking a learning annex course (I met a beautiful girl in an intro to Japanese class once)
Do you paint? Many places host life painting/drawing evenings with live models.
Authors signing their books? (I met a really cool goth guy at an Anne Rice signing once)
Maybe start a local-oriented chat room, or Yahoo group, and meet at a local bistro.
There are tons of groups for writers, artists, model builders, filmmakers, book clubs, etc., etc...

You just have to think creatively.

If you like quiet, but want to get out of the house... how about going to exhibits at museums, or art galleries. (That's how I met Michael Manning, Midori, and a host of others.)

Trouble, true, my sister told me once to go to bookstores if you want to find nice women as they now have coffee shops in them.
But, I hate books and I figured if they're in a bookstore coffeeshop during the day they might be unemployed.
Slaveboy, do you have any shopping malls near you?
You could pose as a photographer needing models and...

... and ruin a good book hunt by stopping to look at women?

I think not, good sir.  I will not fall for your ploy.

for some reason i actually distract guys actually looking for books....and i have to draw their eyes away from my tattoos to answer their questions about them...apparently i have some really good work on me...but it moves things along because i am taken and i just want to get my books...i did have a nice conversation with a guy in the Sci-fi/fantasy section the last time i was there who was looking at my tatts...then he got a phone call and argued with his girlfriend who hadn't answered her phone for 5 hours and then called him drunk off her ass and asked him about dinner...which she was supposed to get 5 hour before...it was quite productive...i learned way to much info about him..lol...

but anyway, even if you're not a reader the coffee shops attached to book stores, pick up some magazines (even though it is not really a library)...wander around...listen to music...

as for who's at a book store durring the day? not sure who mentioned it, but the OP is talking about socializing on the weekends, hence the subject of the post...most people who have 9 to 5 jobs have the weekends off...its the lower end job holders that have to work on weekends...

Actually in this town it will get you an ass chewing extraordinaire for being an irresponsible jerk. Because you have a dog that is not neutered.

You would end up home alone again because the woman would have angrily removed the dog from you and taken it off to the vet and probably filed charges against you in the meantime.

Many women that love cute doggies are also heavily involved with the local shelters and humane societies.

Ok, ok, LaT.

OP, if you live in LaT's area, or anywhere else that has attitudes like the one she refer's to, go ahead and have the pup "fixed". He may still do a li'l humpty dance...

But, seriously, LaT, I understand peoples' concerns about pooch and kitty overpopulation and it's consequences. My pets have always been "fixed". However, simply choosing to not neuter a pet is not an indication of irresponsibility, yanno. Some folks wish to breed their pets, and even if that is not the case, one can be a responsible pet owner without messing with their bits.

Edited to add: File charges ? What the hell kinda place do you live in ??? Where is my ACLU card, gutdammit ?

If you want to meet a woman stay out of bars and churches!
Go to,........laundrymats.
You could spy a nice one folding up her laundry and walk by and snatch a pair of her panties and put them over your head and have her chase you around the place.
Now that's a real conversation starter!

We could become close personal friends.  Just sayin'.

I'm a woman, and I usually find dogs off-putting (unless they're the Labrador variety that gallops around large private estates without needing two trips to the dog park everyday). I specially resent the way they stick their snout in my muff every time I'm on.

Does it make me unnatural?

For the guy allowing his dog to hump her leg silly! Sexual harrassment via Fido, or some such silliness.

I can assure you that you will not distract me from books when I am after them, unless you are particularly remarkable for your intellect.

You step between the philosophy section and me, and we're going to have a real problem.  Then again, if you glance at the book thread over in the off-topic section, you can see my reading tastes vary wildly from most here.  I read almost no fiction anymore, and when I do, it tends not to be typical sci-fi or fantasy.  I have a pretty decent volume of classic literature, and some sci-fi from a few offbeat and very notable authors (Gibson comes to mind), but that's about it.

I do recommend book stores for meeting people, though, if you can strike up conversations.  But only after I have my coffee and my book, not before!
