If I'm not mistaken that was customary and required for the youth of his time in Germany.

Yes, it was, and they didn't necessarily agree with the policies of the time. One of my best friends was a member of Hitler's youth. She despised the man.

DCnovice - I'd prefer to measure such movements by their actions rather than their beliefs. Meaning, let's se what practical solutions they provide rather than what dogma they try to impose.

I agree, but I wonder if the movements would have arisen without the spur of their beliefs.

General ...

First, it is separation of church and state.

Second, the key point is to keep the government from passing laws that deny people the right to worship as they see fit.

Last, the phrase "separation of church and state" does not appear in the Constitution.

There are no violations here.
True. i hate when people say "separation of church and state", like it's a law.  The Constitution says: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof....
The phrase "building a wall of separation between church and state" was written by Thomas Jeffersonin 1802 in a letter to the Danbury Baptist Association.
Suffice it to say...we are a nation of various religious groups, and although i would rather not have evangelicals who spit out hatred and division on a regular basis as advisors to the president, they are there, nonetheless.  i don't see where there should be a problem with Benedict...he can't POSSIBLY be scarier than Pat Robertson.

I don't see a problem either. I'm Catholic, attend mass every Sunday and can honestly say I agree with the church's stance on next to nothing. The willingness to hear someone's words, is not an indication of agreement ... which by the way would apply equally to Senator Obama and Pastor Wright.

That said, you can't fool the brain trust here on CollarMe. It's pretty clear that President Bush is meeting with the Pope in order to hatch a secret plot to convert the nation to a denomination of which he isn't even a member.

Naw - GWB just has a hardon for autocrats with a direct link to the almighty - you know, people like him.

Actually the Dali Lama was just in the USA and he didn't get a state welcome even though he IS the leader of a real country (albeit a theocrat).

I think you need to research what the meaning of "seperation of church and state" actually means, before you are allowed to utter the phrase again.

im sorry but if this is the way it is (supposed to be)
then what the hell is the president doing with the Pope
at the white house?
i have the feeling the Pope is about to be flamed for not putting his hand over his heart
during the US anthem.....

This isn't any different than another other "dignitary" who comes to the White House to visit.  Its not a separation of church and state issue.  That has to do with having some kind of "official" religion for the US or having the head of our government be the head of the main religion of the country.   In England the Queen or King is also the head of the Church of England.  Or at least it used to be that way.

Maybe Bush should take him down to Texas to witness an execution.

Orion, I think that Thomas Jefferson quote says a lot!

I heard that Mass was quite a good show - to me, it was a nightclub in Brixton. If Catholic Mass is anything like that club, then I understand why someone would attend regularly  .

Except that by the descriptions offered this is the biggest, brassiest, sexiest official greeting GWB has ever offered any head of state. So while The Dali Lama gets nary a nod, The Pope gets a  21 gun salute, honour guard and all the trimmings. And the Pope is king of a fake country!

It's got nothing to do with the separation of chuirch and state it has to do with WTF GWB? Haven't wasted enough money supporting despots this year? Need to blow the reaiming budget so it doesn't get down sized next year? It has to do with a lame duck making a big splash - for what friggin' reason?

Twice as bad as it was last post.

You of course know my view ... you and every other person that wants to live here, are more than welcome. When we were the great melting pot, we were a great nation. Now, it seems as if we are something less.

It's an interesting dichotomy, isn't it?  I feel the same way caitlyn does.  I don't attend every Sunday, but I do hold my beliefs and after examination over the years have felt at home with the Catholic beliefs I was raised on than any other religion.  It goes back to believing in what the original intent of the religion was - based on Jesus' teachings and basically living a good life and believing in a few basic Catholic things like Mary, the saints, the afterlife, the Trinity, etc.  It's got very little to do with the political side of the church, which I find abhorrent.  BUT I go for myself.  I'm not going to let my negative feelings about all the issues one could bring up about the church drive me from something I feel is my spiritual base.

I have no problem with the Pope having a state visit at the White House.  Other religions leaders have been accorded such courtesies in the past.  I remember when Pope John Paul II visited Philadelpha, where I was raised.  I marched in the parade as part of the drill team I was on in my Catholic grade school.  The excitement and awe in being right with the action was palpable, even to a grade schooler.

I'm all for the separation of religion (broadened from the church) and the state (politics).

I give two examples - Poland and the extreme right wing Kaczynski government and my other example would have to be Iran.

The two are incompatible unless you prefer to live under a dictatorship.

I strongly believe that the government, the church and the military should all be kept separate and never combined.
