I'm Catholic, attend mass every Sunday and can honestly say I agree with the church's stance on next to nothing. This amused me in a "nice" way. Why go then ? It's an interesting dichotomy, isn't it? I feel the same way caitlyn does. I don't attend every Sunday, but I do hold my beliefs and after examination over the years have felt at home with the Catholic beliefs I was raised on than any other religion. It goes back to believing in what the original intent of the religion was - based on Jesus' teachings and basically living a good life and believing in a few basic Catholic things like Mary, the saints, the afterlife, the Trinity, etc. It's got very little to do with the political side of the church, which I find abhorrent. BUT I go for myself. I'm not going to let my negative feelings about all the issues one could bring up about the church drive me from something I feel is my spiritual base. I have no problem with the Pope having a state visit at the White House. Other religions leaders have been accorded such courtesies in the past. I remember when Pope John Paul II visited Philadelpha, where I was raised. I marched in the parade as part of the drill team I was on in my Catholic grade school. The excitement and awe in being right with the action was palpable, even to a grade schooler.
