General ...

First, it is separation of church and state.

Second, the key point is to keep the government from passing laws that deny people the right to worship as they see fit.

Last, the phrase "separation of church and state" does not appear in the Constitution.

There are no violations here.

Specifically, what the 1st amendment to the US constitution says is

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;..."

No violation

Actually the Dali Lama was just in the USA and he didn't get a state welcome even though he IS the leader of a real country (albeit a theocrat).

i was wondering if anyone would notice [;)]

I think you need to research what the meaning of "seperation of church and state" actually means, before you are allowed to utter the phrase again.

actually, i dont. but thanks for the input.

Except that by the descriptions offered this is the biggest, brassiest, sexiest official greeting GWB has ever offered any head of state. So while The Dali Lama gets nary a nod, The Pope gets a  21 gun salute, honour guard and all the trimmings. And the Pope is king of a fake country!
It's got nothing to do with the separation of church and state it has to do with WTF GWB? Haven't wasted enough money supporting despots this year? Need to blow the reaiming budget so it doesn't get down sized next year? It has to do with a lame duck making a big splash - for what friggin' reason?
Z.

thank you Z.
im curious as to why the Pope gets such a big whooping deal and the Dali Lama gets picketed.
separation of church and state, get it?

Indeed it does Popeye. It is what the government has been doing for a long time now, regardless of party, and the sheep keep asking for more shepherds and getting more wolves. If we do not want more wolves, we need to start taking care of ourselves and holding people accountable.

I just find it strange how rabid some people are against religion. Remove religion and mankind will find some other justification for what it does. Education of the people is our best defense, but then again we are trusting the government to educate our kids.

Maybe Bush should take him down to Texas to witness an execution.
"Hey there Holy Father, you got anything you want him to pass on fer ya?"

Orion, I think that Thomas Jefferson quote says a lot!

It's either the government or some religious institution that will do the job of educating children... unless you're volunteering to do it yourself :-) ?

With regard to education, how are the children of illiterate and semi-literate parents going to get a decent education (in the event education is in the hands of parents)? It will not happen; values detrimental to education will be passed down through the generations.

Assuming you want to see an educated people, then it will take a highly organised administrative body to step in and fill the role vacated by some parents.

I'd suggest the trick is to manage the shepherds so they don't morph into wolves.

I actually have already volunteered, and do so. My kids go/went to public school, I read what they are given to study, I teach them above and beyond what the school does. I correct the misinformation when presented, which is usually a rewrite of history or an exclusion of something about history.

More parents need to take an active role. There needs to be less government involvement at the Federal level, and more control of education at the local level.

I agree, but we need shepherds that are close at hand, not all the way at the national level. Much easier to over see something as a responsible citizen, when those that need to be held accountable live a few miles away.
