No, I've not been overwhelmed or scared by such feelings, although I have been at times a little uncomfortable at the unfortunate reality of expressed feelings I couldn't reciprocate.

As I've put it in other conversations, "I wouldn't keep a dog around if I didn't love her. Why any less a slave?"

Of course, there are different types, levels, and intensities of 'love'...
