popeye1250 -> Anyone else have the flu? (4/18/2008 10:31:35 AM)

I started feeling real shitty Wed night.
The chills. Nasal congestion.
Yesterday morning when I woke up after tossing and turning all night my t-shirt was drenched in sweat and I had a temp.
Last night I got the chills so bad I turned the heat up to 80, put on a heavy sweater and pulled a blanket over me for 20 minutes until I could get warm, then I was too warm!
How long does this shit last anyway and for how long will I be infectious to other people?
I've been staying in.
I'm drinking lots of fluids but I don't have any appetite.
Should I try to eat anything?

there is a drug your Dr can call in for you that will help lessen the severity:
Tamiflu

(you need to take it w/i the first 48hrs)

I hope you feel better soon!

I have some left over painkillers that I'm taking for the body aches, Hydrocodone and I'm taking aspirin for the fever.

pahunkboy -> RE: Anyone else have the flu? (4/18/2008 11:01:38 AM)

codien is a waste for this ailment.

tylenol is best. a DM cough syrup if you  desire it.

if you are not hungry dont eat.

close in your world.   sweating is good. it is expelling germs.
use covers-  stay comfy take it easy.

likely the sheets, pillow case, clothes will have sweat in them.

keep stimulation at a minumin.

if you have allergies to anything- then get it away from you.

waste is suppose to move thru your body.  codiene could block you up and you wont feel the full efects of it. if it then goes on to make you dizzy -no fun.

putting on a hat, scarf can help with the chills- your imune system is down for the moment- so what you need is the space to let your body work- what it naturally does.

pahunkboy -> RE: Anyone else have the flu? (4/18/2008 11:03:02 AM)

oh- figure 72 hours before getting alarmed.  [as in DR visit]

ryssa -> RE: Anyone else have the flu? (4/18/2008 11:08:09 AM)

I sure can relate to your misery, I woke up yesterday and my throat was so sore, when I swallowed, it felt like I was swallowing
glass and my sinuses were plugged so bad that when I did try to swallow, my ears would pop.

I haven't had a cold or the flu for at least 3 years and hope I don't get another one for 3 more! It really sucks....

I find gargling with salt water and taking Tylenol Cold and Flu have helped a little.  Hope you feel better soon.

<sorry this was in reply to the OP>

It's already past the most ideal time, but I would still quickly obtain some extract of elderberry, and use as directed.

You may have weakened your immune system, preparing for your roto-rooter job last week.

While you're at the pharmacy buying your extract of elderberry, pick up some acidophilus to replensh the friendly flora of bacteria in your intestinal tract, that your colonoscopy preparation helped flush away.

puppy4owner -> RE: Anyone else have the flu? (4/18/2008 11:12:00 AM)

ya,thats the flu-i had it once about a year ago-i could barely get up and was a zombie for a bout 4 or 5 days-dont do anything-you cant anyways-water,rest,sweat-it will  get better in a few days

angelikaJ -> RE: Anyone else have the flu? (4/18/2008 11:14:38 AM)

the Tamiflu will actualy shorten the course of the illness and reduce severity...

Sub, I was thinking that too about the colonoscopy last week.
I was tired for two days after that.
The proceedure is nothing it's all the prep work before it that really knocks you out.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Anyone else have the flu? (4/18/2008 11:52:00 AM)

Poor thing!  The flu is a misery.  Too late for tamiflu, it sounds like, but go with stuff like juice and bouillion, and sack out until it's over.  Crackers are good for absorbing the sloshy stomach, or pasta....

Level -> RE: Anyone else have the flu? (4/18/2008 3:20:45 PM)

No flu, but there is a  hellacious stomach virus going around here. One co-worker was out almost a week, now her b/f is so sick he can't drive back to Houston, and my brother and his whole family had their ass kicked by it.

I know, I had one the day after you did. It really kicks ass and poops you out, doesn't it? ... (okay, pun intended)

sub, yeah, I wasn't even hungry afterwards, just tired.
Slept real good for a few nights afterwards.

GoddessDustyGold -> RE: Anyone else have the flu? (4/18/2008 4:47:30 PM)

~FR~  I actually thought about your colonscopy too, when I read this, Popeye.
If you're not hungry, don't worry about forcing yourself to eat.  Feed a cold, starve a fever and all that.  But keep your system going with bullion, a few saltines, jello, tea, water, etc.  Lots of liquids also help to flush it through the system quicker.
The pain killers are not going to do a thing for you except possibly block up your system.  Bad idea!  You are better off with tylenol for fever and discomfort...if you are really achy, ibuprofin or aspirin would be the anti-infamatories of choice.  A soak in a hot tub can also do wonders.
My guess is that you did drag your immmune system down with the prep and then you walked into a germ infested outpatient facility and now you have a royal case of influenza.
Keep warm, sleep and be well soon.  We must hear about Teddy Kennedy every day lest we forget!  [sm=flowers.gif]

Well, hell... with dreams like that, it's almost worth having the flu... [sm=evil.gif]

soul2share -> RE: Anyone else have the flu? (4/18/2008 7:01:51 PM)

Popeye...if you are still running a fever, I've got a way to break it.....seriously.

Take the hottest shower you can stand.....but DON'T stay in long enough to get hit with cold water.  Then pull on some sweats, heavy ones if you have them, or layer a couple of lighter ones, crawl into bed under every blaknet and sheet you own.  This has always worked great for me.....forces the core body temp up, so you'll sweat it out.

I've managed to dodge the flu since 96.....was out from work for 2 1/2 weeks and ended up with viral pnemonia, AND I totaly lost my voice.  The doc said I ripped up my vocal cords trying to hack the crap out of my lungs.  And I don't get the flu shots.....I don't care waht anyone says, when I had to get them in the Army, I always ended up sick as a dog!  The first time I got it, I ended up in the hospital w/pnemonia.  The second two gave me the worst cases of bronchitis I've ever had.  And up until that point in my life, I'd never had any kind of upper respiratory issues going on.

Make sure you get enough fluids.....I didn't eat when I had it, but dehydration will only compoubd your problems.  Hope you feel better soon!

Vendaval -> RE: Anyone else have the flu? (4/18/2008 7:50:11 PM)

Eat lightly, soup, crackers, jello, juice, etc.  Also, sports drinks are good for helping with the dehydration.  Do you have some friends or neighbors who can get you to the doctor or pick up medicine and supplies for you?
