I'm guessing Domestic hate mongering i.e. within a home as witnessed by an authoritative outsider carries a less serious punishment tariff i.e. a fine whereas public speaking carries a higher tariff such as imprisonment. You are seeing part of a much bigger document, that's the problem.

Oh, oh,...does that mean they can be "turned in" by their children, neighbors, or family?

How it is policed is anyone’s guess but in the UK version it mentions a constable, so I'm guessing if a member of the police overheard your speech he would issue an on the spot fine or you could challenge it and go to court.

Wow, europe just can't stop with it's attempts to ban and force thought on its citizens. (That is one of the things that made the Nazi's evil, if people haven't figured it out yet) Here I thought burn the books was bad, now it's down to not even being able to publish the books, or speak a rather benign opinion. And the quote in the article was tame to say the least. Hell, Obama's pastor would be charged under those guidelines. I did watch several of his full speeches.

Wow, and to think(Europe as a whole) they are slowly morphing into one big centralized nation(EU, give it 50 years). Scary.

Really, that's fucking scary...

I'm not even saying the U.S. is perfect, I utterly detest, a large fraction of what the government is doing, we bomb people all over the planet, we push our weight everywhere, but we don't get dragged off in the middle of the night for opinion yet.

Anyplace that makes the following illegal, is fucking scary. I'm not even kidding, it is only a small pen stroke away from making any dissidence illegal.

"Prosecutors asked that the Paris court hand the 73-year-old former sex symbol a two-month suspended prison sentence and fine her 15,000 euros ($23,760) for saying the Muslim community was "destroying our country and imposing its acts."",

LOL, boy I'm glad I'm in the U.S., I haven't been able to say that in awhile, France is scary. And here I was thinking the US population is to domesticated and managed. Wow, I had no freaking clue, I mourn for those in France, that long for freedom.

This is open and shut I've read this whole thread, and all the legal parts posted, and that my friends is just inviting some wicked bad shit. Thought police. LOL, it's just pathetic, truly pathetic.

I mean does France really think a 70+ wrinkled up old sex symbol hag, is going to incite a riot. Yeah, that's who leads all these revolts, and you know the elderly they are just a powder keg waiting to explode. LOL, fucking hilarious. France, you got to love em.

Aren't you just glad you're not European, hmmm?

PS: by the way, it doesn't look like you read the rest of the thread. It's the only explanation for your knee-jerk.

PPS: if the people of France long for freedom... about time you invaded them, and showed them what life's really about, isn't it  ? I'm sure they're waiting for you with open arms .

I'm sorry. but BB is a public figure, which for me disqualifies her right to freedom of speech if it incites hatred or stigmatizes people, which is the issue here..

She is stigmatizing Muslim immigrants.

She should be sent to prison, locked up, reeducated.

I'm sorry but she is part of the entertainment industry and runs a charity.. that makes her a public figure and it also makes her publicly accountable.

People in such positions shouldn't be allowed free speech. Period.

Bullshit..... You expect free speech, are you not a playwrite yourself ? Maybe not as well known as Bardot, but still well known in your field of work. If you want to have free speech, why cant she be afforded the same ? Or does this not apply to people you dont agree with.

This is just a justification to remove someone's rights. Public figures definately should have the right to freedom of speech. You are trying to say that people like MLK Jr., Ghandi, etc. should have had their freedom of speech removed once they became a public figure? You really need to study the issue, see how it has been restricted in the past, and the results of those restrictions.

Yes I am, and I also run a charity. The bit about reeducation was tongue in cheek, and having reconsidered it yes, I still feel that public figures should be held accountable for inciting hatred and intolerance among others. Maybe I was wrong to deny public figures free speech but I still feel strongly they should be held accountable.

Why can't she be afforded the same? I'll tell you why. It's okay to attack another public figure. I'm critical of various politicians, both left and right, I find Ahmadinejad to be just as evil as any other dictator, but these are public figures.

She is attacking people, whether they be Muslim immigrants or homosexuals, or whoever. These are not public figures, in some cases these are people denied a voice themselves because they express a minority opinion.

Free speech and freedom of personal expression carry with them a certain degree of responsibility. You cannot talk about civil liberties if you cannot respect equality and diversity, it really is that simple.

It's got nothing to do with whether I agree with her or not. She's got every right not to like Muslims or homosexuals or anyone else for that matter, but that's her own private opinion and not something she should be promoting via a charity concerning animal rights.

MLK and Ghandi weren't inciting hatred and intolerance.

Yes seeks, but you miss the point slightly.. I'm not so much a liberal as radical.. there's a bit of a difference.

The reeducation bit was tongue in cheek, it's entirely up to people what they think, but when their concept of freedom of speech ends on the tip of their tongues or just past their noses it's worth pointing this out.

And yes seeks, I'm glad you found these articles about Saudi attitudes to transsexuals, but notice that the intolerance actually came from officials and not from people. I see a difference between authority and between people. I've already stated that Ahmadinejad is one of the most evil dictators around at the moment.

But just because you've got evil dictatorships such as Ahmadinejad and oppressive governments such as the Saudi Royal Family, the Taliban, and Islamic fundamentalists all purporting to be Muslims, it doesn't necessarily mean that all Muslims are like this.

I don't see any civil liberties in stigmatizing people and for that matter see political correctness as not just stigmatizing people but promoting inequality.

Come on seeks, whats the point of beheading someone then sentencing them to 200 lashes and six months in gaol?

Stella, its all very well saying a comment was tongue in cheek, after the event. I am guessing you would not have mentioned it, but for an adverse reaction. As for her attacking groups of people, i have seen you do exactly that before. My remarks still stand, Bardot, regardless of her status, is just as entitled to freedom of speech as you are. For a writer to try and deny someone free speech is very hypocritical. If she has broken any laws, then let the legal system run its due course.

She has broken the law, which is why she was prosecuted, and found guilty.

Okay Politesub53, I back down on this one.. I didn't think through my own point properly.

I'm actually against denying anyone free speech on principle, but I took exception to the 'Muslims' label. Not because I'm defending Muslims but when you tar everyone with the same brush that's when it becomes hateful.

Yes I have attacked groups of people but not on grounds of their religious beliefs or sexual orientation.

Civil liberties and social stigma do not go hand in hand any more than civil liberties and political correctness.

I know that, and have no qualms with it. My posts were about denying her the freedom of speech. Two different things.
