You and your son are in my prayers. At one point we almost lost our daughter so I know what you are going through. Please take the time to care for yourself. It will help caring for your son.

Best wishes,

Jo

Good lord, I can't even imagine how terrifying that is for you OR your son... thank goodness you were in the emergency room and not off on a camping trip or something like that!

Prayers definitely are being sent your way, I'll light one of my vigil candles for him.  Please keep us updated on his condition, it's good to hear he's breathing on his own at least.  Many hopes for a speedy recovery.

Good news! The prediction of 48 hours on the breathing tube was wrong. He is breathing on his own and even walked a few steps today. They will be moving him out of critical care tonight.

The ECG was wrong, too and his heart is fine. Thank (whomever) he is young, strong and stubborn. He has been training to be a Marine and is in amazing shape (he's leaving at the end of the summer- Parris Island). That's one of the reasons it was so world-rocking to see this stoic, arrogant kid in such pain.

I have had an outpouring of love and prayers from friends all over. Thank you all so much.

I know he will be fine now. I, however, will take a lot longer to get over this whole ordeal. I'm an overtired, numb mess.

Hejira,
What brought you to the emergency room to begin with?

His belly-ache, what else? For him to admit he was in pain was enough for me to take it seriously, but his stoicism led the doctors to think it was minor. We were in the Er by 1:20am. He got a bed in the pediatric ER about 3am. They did an xray (yes, an xray for a soft tissue problem!) and saw his intestines were bloated, so he got maalox. it seemed to help and the MD was satisfied. I wasn't. Blood was finally drawn and his white count was high. Now, granted, he was not vomiting and had no fever, his pain was still across the lower abdomin bilaterally and he was answering questions normally (after the nurse and/or doctor would leave, then he doubled over.) Stoic idiot. I kept telling them he wouldn't show pain.

When the CBC came back elevated, then a contrast CT was ordered. He had to drink discusting contrast dye and wait 2 hours before the test could be done. They gave him some smooth muscle pain reliever, but nothing else. it did nothing. When a new pediatrician came on duty at 7 am, she took one look at him and ordered morphine. The CT had not come back yet, but she called for a surgeon.

The scan came back at 7:30 am and showed the appendix had ruptured. Then, there was a problem with the surgeons. Every pediatric surgeon was off friday for Passover. Every damn one in Palm beach County. I have no idea how that could happen. We had to go to the hospital Administration for special permission for an adult surgoen to do the surgery (he's 5'6" and 145 lbs- physically an adult).

By the time a surgeon was found and everything set up - it was 11am. So, we had been at the hosp for 10 hours already. Who really knows when the appendix burst, but we knew for at least 3 hours before he got into surgery.

Peritonitis had set in, but the surgeon cleaned it out. When they were pulling the tubes out of his lungs, he reacted and he started frothing up bloody liquid from his mouth. And that started all the craziness. The surgeon had already told me everything was fine (at 12:30) and left. I kept waiting and waiting for them to tell me I could see Jacob in recovery. After 3pm, the anathesiologist came out and told me that he almost died and was on a ventilator and in CCU.

You can imagine how I freaked. After being up all night and watching him in incredible pain and waiting for care. it's been a night mare.

And now that I know he's going to be alright, i am really a mess. I've been holding it together so tightly..... now it's really hitting me that I almost lost him.

I'm glad to hear that your son is going to be okay and I hope the best for you as well. My daughter at 16 had Hodkins disease in stage IV B and she scared me a few times where I thought I might lose her. Thankfully she is fine.
Your ordeal also brings back the memory of my own personal horror story of my ruptured appendix. The hospital I went to let me wait 15 1/2 hours before they finally cut me open and that was indeed the worst thing I'd ever been through. I can certainly sympathize with you on a multitude of levels.
