I would like to devote some time to learn and perfect some new
skills that would make me more useful and attractive to potential
Dommes.  My first thought would be to get enrolled in a certified
massage therapist program.  Any other ideas would be appreciated.

This is something really broad and depends on the type of service you are looking to give a dominant female and what the particular dominant you eventually connect with desires...

So, as with so many questions asked here, I can only give my own desires and interests as one example:

Massage, good choice.
Basic landscaping and housework knowledge (meaning, beyond knowing how to run the lawn mower and to take out the trash)
Pedicure/manicure ability (especially, learn to paint nails well)

Relationships come and go, but plastination is forever.

I generally use fast-reply. If directing my post at someone specific I will indicate so.

Minimal summary: Artist, Disabled Veteran, Vegan, Pornographer, and Agender dominant female.

I can't really think of anything specific, but, I can point you to a few things that might make you more "marketable" to a prospective Dominant:

Body massage - I don't think you "need" to become certified, but it may definitely help. I personally have two books on massage techniques - one's called
"The Joy of Sensual Massage" by Jack Hoffer, and the other is called
"Sensual Massage: A Lovers guide" by Susan Mumford

The latter book has recipe for making your own massage oils.

Pedicures/Manicures - I don't know if there's a way you can "study" for this - I would assume so because if you wanted to open up a nail salon, you'd have to be certified. Besides... what Woman would deny a pedi/manicure?

Landscaping - It never hurts to know how to spruce up a Ladies home.

Cooking - What better way to show your adoration for her by cooking up her favorite meals/snacks?

These are all "general" type skills, if your looking for somethin specific (ie shibari/rope bondage, electrical play etc) it'll ultimately be up to the Missus in question, but, once you find out her interests, it NEVER hurts to learn about it before saying "ok.. electrocute me" lol

Hope this helps

Thank you all for the first couple of responses.  I was thinking that
going through formal training for massage may set me apart from
everyone else who may just claim to have mastered the skill.  I have
always thought that there are "good" massages and then truly fantastic
massages.  I would like to be able to perform the latter.

Cooking is not my strongest suit, but I guess I should start working
on that there is always room for improvement.

MladyHathor:  I read the passage you cited about Southern Manners.
I do really believe in my very core that a good slave or submissive
must display impecable manners (even if in a bad mood).  I don't think
the link was written for a TPE exhange, but it certainly should apply
(I think).  The ONLY one that I might disagree with is Ordering for
both while at a restaurant.  My experience is the Domme may actually
order for both - deciding what the sub shall eat.  In any event, obviously,
I think, it would be up to the Domme what part a sub would play in the
process of ordering.  Thank you for responding.

I don't order for myself when in a restaurant with a man. This is a practice I have observed in both D/s and vanilla relationships. It stems from my upbringing and comes from my father's perspective where gender ettiquette is concerned. I once went into a nice restaurant with a Dominant who at my request (and a request that pleased him) ordered my meal. I encountered our server in the restroom. She was a young woman probably college age who asked me if I didn't find it demeaning to have my date order my dinner for me. I explained to her that this gesture was very much like having my car door opened for me, something a considerate and thoughtful male would do. She said she hadn't thought of it in that way and that my explanation made sense to her. Just my take on this....

For my lady, who is an information junkie, knowledge of how to do research quickly and effectively is a hot item.  She'd also like for me to help with some programming since she has a few websites.  These are skills she enjoys even though we are a real-time couple.  Perhaps something along those lines appeals to you?

DianeB, you are so funny! (but god it's true)

I think Massage is a Great idea, it's the first one that came to my mind as well! However, the practicality of doing a formal training, well, they generally take quite a bit of time (like, every single night for 12 months or a 6month day program) and generally cost quite a few thousand, so, I don't think any Domme would actually expect that of you --- I think you might explore having (/possibly paying but it will still be thousands less than a program) a massage therapist show you some general skills, maybe pay for 3-4 massage sessions and tell them you want to get better at doing it for your girlfriend and can they teach you some stuff. The things that feel good to you, ask them how they do it and maybe you can pick up a few tricks and become aware of things through experience. Just saying: a massage therapy program is incredibly time and cost intensive so unless you just had an interest in it or lots of time/money it may not really be practical..... or required. :)

Some other ideas:
YES on yard work.
learn how to make good drinks -- The GIRL kind!

Cooking is a needed (/almost required skill) -- I would invest in cooking classes if I were you --- It is Far, far less time and money intensive and if it something that you are not good at, you want to strengthen your weaknesses if you can...  You don't have to be able to cook gourmet or extremely well, but there are 7 nights in the week, I certainly eat on every single one of them , and would prefer not to also have to cook every one of them as well...

Cleaning should go without mentioning, but, I guess always good to mention, LOL.......   How HOT is it when a Man does the dishes?? ---- let me tell you: H.O.TTTTTTTT  haha

With a vacume....... oh baby!

Misc. household skills such as carpentry, plumming, Computer skills, organizing, and other useful "life" skills never go out of style. I expect to be bathed/have my hair washed & brushed, though I'm not sure that is really a skill to "learn" in the way that you are asking about...

Damn, I need a housesubbie again. ...just writing this has gotten me hot, it's been way too long! haha

ps. Learn to dance.

It is relatively cheap, nice standard class room format, always plenty of women in a class (and fewer men) to learn with, low time commitment per session -- usually only 4-6 weeks per session, one night a week, and not more than $35- $80 per session depending on where you live for a group class.

No, really --- learn to dance!!!!    It comes in handy in a variety of ways, makes her feel special, good to learn body interaction, as well as rhythm. Even a lady that does not "dance" wants to dance. Trust me.

Aside from those stated, any handyman skills will eventually come in useful. I don't think many Dommes expect a boy to have all these skills, but get good at the ones you do have!
I agree that you don't need to be certified to give a good massage but if that's what you want to do, go for it.

On a more serious side-learn to sew. Fetish gear is very pricey-especially custom. How many women out there would love to have thier very own fetish tailor?

Seriously, here. If I had a man who could massage, cook, and sew, I would never get rid of him. If, as DianeB suggested, he knew when to keep his mouth shut.

Male subs are so unimaginitive. Never thinking about what women really want.

It's not rocket science guys.

And maybe it's not all about you?

It's really all going to depend on the woman in question.  Someone suggested you learn how to mix "girly" drinks.  I drink single-malt whisky.  Landscaping means nothing to me.  I'm a confirmed city-dweller, so my ever owning anything with a yard is unlikely (I hope).  If you ever ordered for me in a restaurant, I'd probably box your ears, unless I'd instructed you to place the order whilst I was away from the table.  One sub I'd made the acquaintance of loves to knit mohair sweaters.  I'm allergic to mohair (apparently some other type of wool was beyond his abilities).  Knowing how to cook, clean, do household repairs, and give massages wouldn't hurt.  I liked Leatherist's idea of learning how to sew fetishwear.  It's something I'd like to do myself, if I had the time.

So, rather than learning a really unusual skill that may be of no use, you'd probably be better off getting good at the basics, then finding out from your domme if there's something specific she'd like you to learn.
