personally, i think a "beautiful person" shows up inside out. please, let that make sence to someone. it's really easy to look like everyone else. but to say something that makes other people think is not easy, and deserves merit...

It's the mind and mental that is important. The intelligence, the humour, the outlook on life, these are the things that attracted me to my Master in the first place.

christine1 -> RE: Beauty shows up as... (4/22/2008 1:01:59 PM)

yes i agree, the mind and heart and sense of humor go a long way in how attractive a person is.

No, this is a poll so it belongs here. So if you put in Off-Topic, yes, it probably got moved. Just remember:

I did't vote..(sorry)
Being an ugly duckling.. I learned that visual beuty can be degraded by the persons personality..
I do not say to someone "You are beutiful" because they have a nice physical appearance, nor because they have a great intelect, but a compliment of the two combined...

I'm afraid I didn't vote only because I'm a literal-minded bastard.  However, to clarify:

If the question is, "Can beauty be physical or mental?" I'd have to go with 'both'.

If the question is, "Does beauty manifest more obviously as physical or mental?" I'd have to lean towards 'physical' - advertisement imagery  is easy, recognizing mental attributes requires effort.  Less effort required tends to be the bigger draw, like it or not.

If the question is, "Should beauty be defined as physical or mental?" it becomes subjective, but my personal lean would be towards 'mental'.  The mind translates the input of the senses, thus rendering the ultimate discernment on what is aesthetically pleasing, and what is not.  That means even physical beauty cannot exist without the same mental appraisal one would put into discerning "mental" beauty.

If the question is, "Were you always like this, or were you dropped on your head as a baby...?"...well, actually when I was very young my sister tipped the shopping cart over intentionally because I annoyed her.  You be the judge.

Both. Inside and out.

Aileen1968 -> RE: Beauty shows up as... (4/22/2008 7:24:21 PM)

I choose someone that has a kick ass personality chosen from a group of good looking men.  Why not?  Once again, it doesn't have to be an either or. You can have both.

chaosforge -> RE: Beauty shows up as... (4/22/2008 9:31:45 PM)

perspective check;

if someone said you were beautiful either mentally or physically, which would concern you more?

There's some Latin phrase that describes an error in logic, in which a false dichotomy is presented.  Inner beauty and physical beauty aren't mutually exclusive.

The suggestion is that people who are considered physically beautiful, aren't as endowed with beauty of spirit or personality or psyche, and vice-versa.  This, in itself, seems to be judging a person's other qualities, by their appearance.

Touched by the sweet skin, the blood flows in
wraps me in a soft heat
and fills up the bottom of my heart

I want to rain down
so much love upon you always
now, I wish for an eternity

Bless this starry sky that lights our meeting
.... it's so very pretty

The guidance of the swirling stars is magic
who should I thank for this?

I devote my love to you forever
for an eternity

Either would be a compliment.

sirsholly -> RE: Beauty shows up as... (4/23/2008 6:38:27 AM)

beauty is superficial but ugly goes to the bone marrow.

Inner beauty changes ones appearence. So does inner ugliness.

joyfulmalcontent -> RE: Beauty shows up as... (4/23/2008 6:52:03 AM)

I have been around beautiful people who are gorgeous inside and out. I have been around physically beautiful people that amounted to nothing inside. A pretty sea shell. You pick it up, look at it, smile, think "awww pretty" but then you turn it over and it's empty inside. I have met physically repugnant people who were just as ugly inside. I have met ugly people whose inner life and light shine so brightly, you can only stare at them, dazzled. Everyone has their own ideas about what is beautiful and attractive to them. Mental and physical beauty aren't mutually exclusive. Though IMO, not matter how physically beautiful someone is, if they don't have something else besides that pretty outside going on, long term, it's not going to work.

Your physical beauty is affected by your body language even in still photography.  Personal attitude and self image make a huge impact.

favesclava -> RE: Beauty shows up as... (4/23/2008 10:46:24 AM)

beauty and the beast. if  i had to choose in a partner outward beauty versus mental beauty.each being exclusive of the other, i would choose mental. fortunately i find Master both physically and mentally stimulating.
