I think y'all drive too damn slow, and in the left lane!  At least the tourists from down there that come up here do.  And in the mountains up here, don't get behind one of 'em.....especially if their pulling 5th wheel, boat, or driving an RV.

ummm.... would you? really? [sm=yahoo.gif]

I was gonna say it just to see if you would but then, I LOVED your entire post. I see this every single day and it makes me crazy. The thing is, most of the parents I see each day are trying real hard to instill pride of accomplishment within their children but more often than not, seem to be butting their heads up against a brick wall.

We have attentive, active and engaged parents in our school and they're often as bewildered as everyone else is over the negativity and unwillingness to work hard exhibited by those they're raising.

So, blaming the parents isn't the answer either (not saying you did). The school they're in is a small school with excellent teachers, offering its students lots of support (tutoring every night, plus outside tutoring available at no cost after school). There are activities within the school and an significant effort to make the school a community focus, and I still do battle with those who say "I don't get this. I'm not going to do it." When they graduate, they have their diplomas but also certification that will enable them to get an entry level position in a growing and secure industry. This position can help pave the way (in terms of experience and money) to acquiring a college education and STILL, the majority blow it off.

It boggles my mind sometimes.

juliet, I would differ in that sometimes it is the parents fault, to a degree. But there is no single answer to "why?", as far as I can tell.

What do you think of Texans?

kittinsol, et al, before you pass judgement on all Texans, check out Kinky Friedman (formerly of Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys). He's also a novelist (bloody funny) and a social/political activist. He recently was a candidate for Governor of Texas too.

No judgement there, I was merely teasing Level who is, I believe, from Texas :-) .

I like Cosby, but its a truism that people benefit from being self reliant, responsible, and striving.

THE WIRE took a pretty poignant look at inner city America, and its last two seasons tracked the lives of four black middle schoolers from the hood.

One wound up in a foster home after his mother was killed. Another turned into a heroine addict. The third entered the violent world of drug dealing. And a fourth got adopted by good parents --- and put his life on an upward track.

Clearly it takes more than simple prescriptions for people to succeed, and failures and dysfunctions go beyond personal character traits.

As for me, I taught in Baltimore City for one year. Sixth Grade. From what I saw its hard for people to row upstream when they lack health insurance, good jobs, and the society about them offers few prospects to climb the latter. I was in a special-education meeting with a parent of three, and she was wearing her IHOP uniform. I couldn't wrap my mind around how she made ends meet.

Anway, at the start I went into my job arrogant about what a teacher could do in the classroom, and I left pretty damn humbled. Educating/helping/motivating/"speaking to people" is a tricky business. Its just something that defies easy answers.

Yep, I voted for him, and gently twisted a few arms for him, as well. I think he'd do a good job, or at least an interesting one [:D]

At least he'd be a far sight better than our current governor, Hairdo Perry. [:)]

I agree, life can be terribly complex, but the things Cosby prescribes form the foundation for any chance at bettering one's life. He's not right about everything, but society could learn a great deal from him, and improve by doing so.

heartcream -> RE: Bill Cosby and Black Conservatism (4/24/2008 12:16:25 AM)

Interesting thread. I dont feel like I can really speak on this issue being a white chick. I can relate to the part about being poor though. Life is complicated and I personally find it creepy when someone lumps everyone together in a sort of, "If I did it, you can do it, just pull yourself up by your boot straps." In the background, undercurrent I hear/feel a lack of compassion. I sense a self-righteous superiority woven through a fabric of rage disguising itself as like common sense or something.

It has occurred to me more than once that Bill Cosby is not really black. He has stricken me on more than one occasion as a white man in a black man's body. I really dont mean to slander. He is a funny man but I dont know something about him I find discomforting and unreal.

marieToo -> RE: Bill Cosby and Black Conservatism (4/24/2008 12:33:40 AM)

Cosby is and has always been a racist.  He hates the white man.

At least, that's the feeling I've always gotten from him.

Long live the Great Republic of Texas...also alot of people I know of didn't like bush before he became president kinda like how alot of people in Arizona don't like McCain. Also U.S.A Texas is only on loan as a state....soon we will have our own seat in the U.N....hopefully we don't pop out another bush but the state to really blame is Connecticut. Thats where bush is from. Also on Bill Cosby I don't think he hates the white man but instead is bothered by the fact that the black man allows himself to follow what the white man believes all blacks are, Gangbangers...its getting so bad that I see little white kids trying to act like they are "hard" what has this world come to. White propaganda biting the white guy in the ass. Didn't see that one coming now did you whitey :P....damn cracker
