leadership classes teach that communication includes having the person youre speaking to tell you what they heard....so communication hasnt failed-you tell me what you heard and i tell you thats not what i meant........so were not at a failure yet.

fact is neither of us will change our views......and thats ok.

ive never heard a honda, loud or not, that didnt irritate the shit outa me......and crotch rockets make me wanna purposely hit them some days, but i refrain.

good luck with your bike....take the drivers edge course and be careful.......i hope the wind on ya knees mellows ya a bit.....

ya know what drives me batshit?  The idiots riding the crotchrockets wearing flip-flops/sandals/sneakers, shorts, tank top (or no top)............and a full face helmet.  And these are often the same ones that drag race on city streets, during business hours.

They're also the ones you see on break.com eating it and getting seriously fucked up. Some of Darwin's best examples.

That's because although our points are similar, they are different and that is because your view is based in belief, and mine is based in science.

I've seen several crotch rocketeers that I want to "assist" in finding a curb or two. It's the Harley bikers (on the road anyway) that I don't mind because they relax and cruise. Truth be told, the only reason the loud pipes annoy me is because the person I live with can't stand them and I have to hear about it nonstop.

Oh I'll be in the rider's course long before I think about hitting the freeway with a bike, though that's mostly for others' safety, not my own. Where my own life is concerned, I tend to take more of a "whatever happens, happens" kinda stance.

ElectraGlide -> RE: the biker (4/25/2008 11:50:56 PM)

I want to apologize for waking people up at 4:30 with the loud pipes on my Harley, I do not have that problem because I work 2nd shift and I am always awake at that time.

By the way anybody going to Myrtle Beach in May, I will be towing my motorcycle pop-up camper with my bike there to camp for bike week. Here is a picture of it.http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w237/ElectraGlide_David/IMG_0735.jpg

I imagine you think this is funny. Well that's cool.  I like guns a lot.  So how about this....I get a bunch of my friends together and we open a gun range next to your house.  At all hours of the day you can listen to the ear splitting sounds of firearms going off.  One of my favorite guns is my old 12 gauge coach gun.  It's louder than hell.  I can fire both barrels around 3 in the morning near your house.  That's about equal to the decibel levels I am forced to endure when a biker parades past my house at that ungodly hour.

SirRober -> RE: the biker (4/26/2008 3:09:33 AM)

If you don't loike it move, or do something about it. Whining about it here won't help you any.

my belief is based on experience....the hundreds, if not more, times i have heard a bike before i saw it, while riding in a car.......the times i have heard others say they have experienced the same thing.......the time i did look twice and not see anything, but heard a motor and looked a 3rd time and finally saw him.

believe what you wish to, but theres no need to act as if im some emotional basket case spouting fiction.  in my experiences, and those of many i know, it is reality-and reality trumps your so called science in my world.

When it goes on sale later this year, the Honda DN-01 is expected to be priced at around US$16,000. We’re sure it’ll be a nice, refined commuter-bike, but really, we’d much rather take a CB1100R of Evo6."

Edited once more to add:
I checked out the two other bikes referenced in that snippet and I think they're ugly as hell. [8D]

Man, 16 large is a big premium to pay for looks, but then several companies have made a LOT of money based on that... A 750 Hondamatic could get you on the road in a couple of weeks for a lot less money. i didn't want to wait until i could afford my dream bike, so i picked up an old 450cc Nighthawk for $1000, rode it for a year to get some experience, and sold it for $900... Good little bike [:)] Meanwhile, i suspect the guy i worked with who was "saving up for a Harley" and had the nerve to give me crap about "getting a real bike" is STILL driving around in his mom's VW Beetle. Heh.

Incidentally, if you take the exhaust system off of a Honda CX500 (transverse-mounted V-twin, like a Guzzi) right after the headers, it sounds mean as HELL for only being 500ccs!! (no, i didn't ride around like this, i was working on the bike at the time).

Ah well, enough jibba-jabba... i have beautiful weather and bikes to work on! Keep the rubber side down, kids.

The price won't matter when I'm ready to buy. I'm saving up for my Mustang GT first. By the time it's time to get the bike, I'll be able to afford it easy. I'm not just paying for looks either. I'm paying for the whole package, the look, the power (or lack of), the transmission....everything. There's nothing about that bike that I don't like. (Well, I *did* like the gauges in the concept version a little better, but I can deal with that.

I'm not getting *a* bike. I'm getting *that* bike or none at all. That's just how I am. I'm about as interested in learning to switch gears on a bike as I am in a car. I don't need the extra hassle. I'd not even consider owning a bike if I hadn't seen the DN-01.

The neat thing about experience is that everyone's is different. I've heard Harley's AND crotch rockets blocks away.....when outside. I've heard Harleys down the street when in my apartment. But more often than not, I have seen many bikes on the road and my little $20K car's sound proofing is MORE than adequate to prevent me from hearing them unless they're right next to me.

Ever seen the new toyota carolla commercials where they put the guy inside with a sleeping badger and fire a cannon outside? Of course it's an exaggeration, but the point they are going for is still valid. New cars are designed to prevent today's drivers from hearing the obnoxious sounds of the road, and that includes bikers.

Those are your words, not mine. Experience can be fun, but what you hear in a 78 Buick may not be what I hear in a 2008 Corolla.

All I know is I listen to talk radio, which *should* mean that I hear the bikes moreso than the average person - I don't. Since many people don't listen to talk radio during their commutes, that's another decible level that the bikes haev to contend with.

Either way, the saying "loud pipes save lives" is an antequated and increasingly inaccurate notion. The simple truth is saved lives come from safe driving and the ability to avoid the idiots. Sound isn't going to help that at all. It's just going to wake the neighbors and piss off the dogs. Oh yeah.....and it's illegal.

SeeksOnlyOne -> RE: the biker (4/26/2008 12:58:36 PM)

lawd smith this is crackin me up......but its been a pissy week so thanks.

im done debating the how much noise ya can hear in such and such a vehicle with you.....we both have our own views on it.  i do find it amusing as hell you think i might drive a 78 buick.  know where one is that is in good shape though? i had an 80 lesabre that was one of the best cars i ever owned.

but your insistance that its illegal is garbage.  im talking about bikes that are no louder than the harleys the local cops ride.  just because it bugs you does not make it illegal.  unless ya wanna come on down to ga and yell citizens arrest to every police officer driving a harley.  just lemme know when youre in town so i can be sure to come watch the show.

Loud pipers *are* illegal. Anything over a certain decibel level is subject to tickets and fines, be it music or motorcycle pipes.

See here's the humorous part for me. We *were* talking about loud pipes. Obviously most stock pipes don't make that kind of noise, hence why the cops don't ticket themselves. Most 'proud' harley riders don't keep theirs stock, or at least not the ones that we were talking about. Here is where your argument fails though, you ready?

Firstly, you tell me "loud pipes save lives." So we debate whether or not you can hear them inside a modern car.

Then you say "I'm talking about bikes no louder than the local cops ride. Those bikes, to me, are not loud. They are stock, and many on this thread so far have attested that stock pipes are not "loud pipes" and thus, are not what we were talking about to begin with. I seriously doubt the local cops put aftermarket pipes on their bikes and rev them at 3 in the morning. Not to mention I've attended a couple of police parades, seen a couple of motorcades (and my brother was a bike cop for awhile) where I was able to see the police bikes up close and they are, in fact, NOT loud at all.

If I can't hear a "loud" bike in a modern, reasonably soundproofed car, I certainly can't hear a "stock" bike. So then, where do you get that your "loud pipes that aren't loud" save lives?

SeeksOnlyOne -> RE: the biker (4/26/2008 4:13:40 PM)

ok your science vs my emotions......stock pipes can wake ya up-my neighbor does it almost daily-it doesnt bother me

trying to define what is loud does not equal jumping back and forth....the tone of this thread has gone like all bikers do nothing but run around revvin their engines to piss folks off.....im sayin loud does not equal illegal

my fun meters pegged out here so ill let you have the last word.....youre right im wrong....im emotional and yer full of ....mmmmm....facts yeah thats it.

if you ever get ya honda, i promise you someone is gonna think its too loud and you will piss them off riding it....ill assume that alone will make you give up the idea of buying it lest you become one of them annoying as hell bikers.

No, the back and forth part comes when you chimed in on a discussion about loud pipes claiming that A) they are for safety and B) they are stock

We weren't talking about stock. I've heard stock and I've lived next to neighbors with them. Didn't bother me a bit. Now, if he were working on it, or purposely gunning his engine, they can get loud, but they did not, as a general rule, get loud just because he started his motor.

That's because the 'perceived' tone of the OP was that bikers are the victims, persecuted for their appearance and victimized on the road when it's just not the case. For example, the statement in the OP about women grabbing their purses....sorry to tell you that happens more often than not when any guy passes a girl and she's alone. It's called their own survival instinct. Just like when a girl gets that odd feeling walking to her car at night when no one is around....it's simple self-preservation.

Not to mention that, experiences vary, of course. So while you see bikers as benevolent angels who right wrongs and fight for justice, I have seen first hand and second hand that not all are like that. I've seen the large toy runs, I've seen the volunteerism....but I've also seen the retard doing a wheelie down the freeway. I've also read stories about a biker running from the cops (with no rap sheet at all to fear), and I've also seen the stories about the packs of bikers who still think it's the 50's as they swarm cars, throwing things and kicking the side of the car to scare the driver.

When you make an OP that is as far in one direction as the OP did here, you MUST expect at least some backlash.

I strongly doubt this. The one I plan to get has half the power of the average bike, muffled pipes and it's only going to be my 'commuter' vehicle.

When I want to piss people off with my engine, it will be in a 300+ Mustang GT. Although, truth be told, the chances of that happening are slim since, in being loud enough to piss others off, I'll be drowning out my own radio, which defeats my own purposes.

I always do. Though, in my experience around bikes....I usually have to look twice, and then three times more just to make sure they don't do something stupid.

No, you CAN'T. That's the point I, and others, have made here. Those so-loud-they're-illegal pipes DO NOT let you hear them. All they do is wake you out of a sound sleep at 3 am. They do NOT increase your ability to be seen on a busy highway during rush hour.

WTF ! I dont want to be heard, I want to be seen ! !
Thats why I have a pair of passing lights on my Harley....

Aneirin -> RE: the biker (4/26/2008 6:40:38 PM)

Over the pond, here in the UK, bikers are 1% of the motoring population. Because of the density of traffic on our roads, the bikers who ass around tend to end up dead, as the sound proofed metal boxes take no prisoners. Here for some reason, maybe it a poor area, there are lots of bikers, exhaust note tolerable except for the harleys driven by the middle aged with loud pipes and all the leather trimmings. The only other noise from two wheeled transport, is the 17 year olds with their high revving mopeds, being gunned to achieve a maximum speed of thirty miles per hour, one can see them with the death grip on the throttle, trying to squeeze as much engine as possible.

The only irritating other noise, is the plebs with their custom cars and seemigly obligatory throaty exhausts, trying to make an engine sound bigger than the 1000cc that it is.

Me, as a 20 year car driver, now want a bike, at least something with an engine for going uphill, purely as a cheaper and quicker means of getting from A to B

Here's an interesting question in the 'evils of the road' debate.

Mopeds...... Mopeds are NEVER called too loud, they couldn't wake a cat, let alone someone in a house. You never see some chucklehead on a moped dodging in and out of traffic on the freeway or doing wheelies down the highway..... I wonder why those riders can ride like responsible people who want to live, and some of the riders of other kinds of motorbikes can't.

Interesting to think about.
