I believe that taxation is a necessary means of revenue collection. But the laws concerning taxation taxation are written in such an addle-headed way as to be impenetrable as to their bizarre and serpentine meaning. The laws concerning direct taxation are particularly so because of provisions in the U.S. Constitution. Over the years there has been what can effectively be called a conspiracy between all three branches of government to make individuals pay taxes even though the precise laws that legitimize this practice are absent or oblique at best.

A lot seems to revolver around the exact meaning of "income" and whether it can be taxed directly without meeting the criteria of the Constitution for such taxes. The legal dodge the government wants you to believe seems to be that income can be taxed by some indirect means - similar to an excise tax on some activity like labor - without meeting the rule of apportionment in the Constitution.

Now like I said - I believe in taxation. But do I believe in the manner in which we lay and collect taxes in the United States against individuals? Do I believe the laws as enforced pass a Constitutional test? No to both questions.

But yes, you had better pay up or they will come down on you like a ton of bricks.

And that's distraint.

Here's the political part:

As we haven't had a Constitutional government in the past, don't have one now, and aren't going to get one for the foreseeable future (200+ years of history makes my point for me) you might as well forget about trying to get one.

Justice doesn't exist, it's all out of control chaos and greed.

What you can do economically is get something for what you pay into the system. The military industrial complex has it's hand out, as do thousands of corporations. They all feed at the trough of corporate welfare and pork spending. So you should feed from your own taxes too - demand the social services that every other western nation receives.

This isn't about what's constitutional, or right, or just or whatever - it's about bang for the buck. Do you really want nothing in return for the money destrained from you by force?

Take it. Demand it. Make them pay you back through services.

There is no other solution.

Snipes' sentence is an outrage. However, I'm quite sure that the judge was mandated , under the federal sentencing "guidelines" in effect since 1987, to sentence him within a narrow minimum /maximum range. We, in the U.S., are living in a society and system that has gone quite mad. Most U.S. citizens have no idea that these federal minimum /maximum sentencing mandates exist, until they are standing before a federal judge and hear the news.

Shhhh, camille.

Keep in mind that it's not against the law to not file if the gov'ment owes you $$ in the form of a return. I'm not a lawyer, thank gawd, and things may have changed, as they do, but this used to be the case. If one does owe taxes, it's best, imo, to see a good tax accountant and file, even if one can't pay the back tax , penalties and interest. The IRS is willing to negotiate monthly payments in such cases and is far more sympathetic to those who make a good faith effort than to those that they find otherwise. Then, as Mr. Snipes found out, they are relentless and take a scortched earth approach to make an example of them.
