Isn't a Gorean lifestyle a male dominated type lifestyle?  I see several dominant women who like that kind of life style.  I guess I am a little confused.  I would appreciate anyone who could explain.   Thank you

I find it a bit confusing as well, but like many patriarchal hierarchies, Gorean culture seems to make a place for women-who-are-dominant-but-lesser-than-men.

One of the most cruelly strict and sadistic female dominants I ever met was a former Gorean, and had learned some of her style and protocol in that subculture.  *shrug*  Takes all kinds, I guess!

I believe the Goreans have a concept of "free women" and some Dommes are granted that status and treated as equals by the Dominant males at Gorean events.

But I don't know much about Goreans except they practice a lifestyle modelled on an imaginary society from another planet invented by porn fiction writer John Norman.

Since the Gorean lifestyle is all a figment of imagination, I guess Dominant women can imagine they are Gorean.

You'll probably get better answers on the Gorean forum.

OP, are you refering to seeing female dominants who express practicing or borrowing from it in some form on the boards or about seeing it in their list of loves, likes, tolerates, et cetera in profiles?

If it's the second, it may just be an expression of curiosity/interest, respecting others' preferences (as opposed to having it listed in dislikes or hates), or such.

A simplistic way of thinking of this, would be to think of Lords and Ladies of olden times. While the lady would be subserviant to her husband, she still ruled the rest of the manor.

John Norman didn't invent anything.  He stole a story idea from Edgar Rice Burroughs.  Do yourself a favor and read the John Carter on Mars series of novels by Burroughs.  They are well written and well imagined.  I read them as a young boy and found them exciting.  They were written in the 1920's, but they are still exciting.  They are timeless masterpieces IMO, just like Burrough's Tarzan novels.  John Norman took this idea and tweaked it a little with his sexual fantasies about male dominance.  Of course, Norman's books are poorly written, ridiculous pulp novels that aren't even good porn.

You know, I liked all the Bourroughs novels I read, but I never really thought of them as male dominant at the time...I just enjoyed all the sex-ay exotic people half-naked with swords.

I think someone needs to write some of this high fantasy swashbuckling escapist sex-ay crap with a female dominant theme.

Hmmmm...

This particular brand of escapism is mostly a male characteristic (Gor, Dungeons & Dragons, Magic, WoW, the list goes on and never ceases to grow). Women don't need to fantasise so much about dominating men: they just go ahead and do it.

And Borroughs stole from H. Rider Haggard who wrote "King Solomon's Mines" in 1886 and then in 1887 "She" , about a beautiful and powerful white queen of an African tribe ("She who must be obeyed") who however, eventually falls in love with the English explorer

Now I've got to step in and offer a rebuttal to this.

Some of - in fact most of - the best table-top and MMO gamers I've ever had the pleasure of rolling dice and farming trash mobs with were women. Nerdly endeavors are not by any means gender discriminate.

And we all know that female-tailored leather armor gives a +2 circumstance bonus to mind control effects.

As to Gorean lifestyle and interactions: because of the maleable nature of all human interactions, especially in a relatively open and flexible society like the one in modernized western nations, it's not really all that hard or strange for a woman to take Gorean ideals and switch the pro-nouns. She'll probably have a hard time getting headway in that community though, if she's even interested in that.

P.S. On the subject of original ideas and authorship, everybody "steals" from everybody else, with rare exceptions of true muse-inspired genius. Nature of the beast.

I think that girls don't get into gaming because they are told they shouldn't plus the stereotype is that it is for only geeks, geeks equaling in a large degree to boys/men more than girls/women. It takes a self-assured girl/woman to join a gaming group but once in, they can be great assets to any storyteller or DM.

I love gaming, I'll be running a Sabbat Vampire game here again for our group and I run Ghoul Fatal Addiction games at different conventions that are fun and popular -- also erotic, what can I say, can't take that out of me so my games are for mature players. Some of the best players I've ever met were other women -- not girls, but women -- but then again the men we play with are also mature, excellent role-players by and large. They wouldn't survive my games very long if they weren't.

One big difference I do notice among our friends is that the guys tend to be in multiple gaming groups more often than the women through some of the ladies are in two or three groups the guys tend to be in three to five groups! EEK! I have a life I need and want to lead so I'm just in 1 group, ours.

While I can't say I write like the mentioned authors, "Servants of Destiny" is certainly a fantasy novel with a very strong dominant female and frankly a strong submissive male as well.

It's the old school goreans who pretend that the "natural order" is male-dominant. They basically are, like Norman, 1940's and 1950's babies who long for the good old days of when a man's home was his castle and women slaved over a hot stove all day. Fortunately they are dying out and will soon be all gone and good riddance. New school goreanism deals with "reality" (always remember, "reality" is the one word in the language that must always appear between quotation marks).

Obviously all culture is fundamentally female-dominated through the social rules and formality enforced by women. That's why they call it the "social matrix" and not the social patrix. Male-dominance is a cultural construct gifted upon all you cute little bois by mommy so you'll have confidence and "be a man" for us. *hugs*

Personjally I like silks and furs with my sex. so go! go! gorean!

*laughs*
