"Fort Riley atheist soldier speaks out on lawsuit"

By JOHN MILBURN, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 21 minutes ago

"JUNCTION CITY, Kan. - Like hundreds of young men joining the Army in recent years, Jeremy Hall professes a desire to serve his country while it fights terrorism.

But the short and soft-spoken specialist is at the center of a legal controversy. He has filed a lawsuit alleging he's been harassed and his constitutional rights have been violated because he doesn't believe in God. The suit names Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

"I'm not in it for cash," Hall said. "I want no one else to go what I went through."

Known as "the atheist guy," Hall has been called immoral, a devil worshipper and — just as severe to some soldiers — gay, none of which, he says, is true. Hall even drove fellow soldiers to church in Iraq and paused while they prayed before meals."

The Army is being very moronic here. I saw some hearings on C-Span a while back, this is happening to more than just this one guy.

See I personally would have been taking the piss out of his hideously obvious ears not his sexuality or lack of religion. I think those people missed an opportunity. I thought my ears were big.

Also that chin looks like someone’s arsecrack, I wouldn't be able to keep a straight face if he scratched it.

No one aspiring to high office in most western "secular" democracies, would have a hope in hell did they not wear some religion on their sleeve. They may pay lip service to religeous equality but there is still the unspoken expectation that everyone who wants a bit of the power pie will acquiesce.

I don't think his problem is with the whole war part, more the "serving alongside a bunch of assholes" part.

What the hell are you talking about pahunk boy? He's in the theatre being shot at- no complaints.

Aetheists in this country are harrassed worse than black people at a Klan rally. I am one, and I'm tired of having to stay in the closet for fear of losing my job. In small towns, it's not just the Christians harrassing us, they boycott our businesses and burn down buildings. It's like Nazi's and Stalin together. We pay taxes and aren't a hate filled violent problem like a lot of Christian sects so what the hell is this?

Why do aetheists not get the same Constitutional rights as everybody else? There were only two Christians amongst the signers of the Bill of Rights, and they got separation of Church and State put in to make religion personal business. So nobody would be harrassed!
this one nation under god thing dates from the 1950's and is blatantly unConstitutional. sheer number of closeted aetheists, agnostics, Pagans, Wiccans, along with Jews muslims and Hindus among others outnumber Christians in the US. Maybe all us devil worshippers should stop paying taxes and serving in the military. We'll see who has the almighty god then.

There's a lot of religious persecution in this country by christians; it's disgraceful behavior. You're supposed to just leave people alone on religion as theirs is none of your business. And hitting, destroying property, and calling names is hardly christian, or is it?

And when I was a truck driver, I was refused service at a restauraunt once because some "good ol' boys was talking about how "evolution is a lie"  and other idiocracy.  Then turned to me and asked me about it, I couldn't avoid it, so I was a truthful.  The waitress heard my reply (Yes, I subscribe to evolution, et al, being very polite) and promptly told that she wouldn't serve 'the antichrist' and asked me to leave.

Not to mention almost being run off the road by a 'road preacher' when I shot down every argument he could make over the CB.

They should tell him to "Get over it." lol.

It`s worse than that.If you`re a Wicken. Pagan or anything other than Jewdio-Christian,you`re fucked too.Forget being Muslim.

I remember seeing polygamist enabler, Utah Sen.Orrin Hatch saying(on cspan)that those religions weren`t protected under law.Which is false but shows the mentality of the jerkoffs pushing Christianity on people.

IMO,one of the most ridiculous things to come up are Christians claiming to be victims. When just the opposite is true.

This is a very brave young man.We could use more like him.

After 9/11 and Catholic preists and u/m's I'm just turned off to ALL religions.
I pray to God not to anyone else.

LOL Nice to know Christian values are alive and kicking!

As for devil worshipper, the god Bush believes in seems more like the devil to me. (not that I believe in the devil myself, just the human (or is that the inhuman incarnation) incarnation of the devil in shape of believers.

You've said some assinine things before, pee-boy ... but that one takes the cake.  You didn't even bother reading the article,  did you?

About as idiotic as the twatwaffles who claimed I was "unpatriotic" because I make derogatory comments about Captain Bunnypants McFucksticks.  9 times out of 10,  those fucktards don't have a DD-214 of their own.

A persons beliefs or a lack thereof are personal.  This young man is respectful of his fellow soldiers' religious beliefs.  He should not be persecuted for having a different ideology.

That would involve the world being just and fair.

You are oh so right about that.  Shame that is not so.

Just listening to him in the link I get the impression he’s a POOR ME troublemaker.

One out of millions in the arm forces makes an accusation...I'm sure there have been and are more than one atheist in the service…and all of a sudden the arm forces of the US are all bible-thumping fanatics on crusade.

Never ceases to amaze me how gullible people are and ready to jump to conclusions.

Butch

For the Pagans and Wiccans in the military there are organizations that assist with these problems -

Never ceases to amaze me how some people can only see black or white.  Either a situation exists EVERYWHERE or it doesn't exist at all.

The article didn't say anything about the whole army being full of zealots.  But,  as a veteran myself,  I can tell you that such shite does occur.

If a baptist or other evangelical stump-thumper found himself being "religiously persecuted" while in the service,  there would be whole congregations screaming holy vengence for a stop to it.  An atheist or pagan (or other religion) does it and they're a "whiner".

Yeah,  real nice.

hisannabelle -> RE: "Fort Riley atheist soldier speaks out on lawsuit" (4/27/2008 9:38:57 PM)

i agree with owner59 in that any non-judeo-christian is much more likely to be discriminated against. i am glad this soldier is speaking out. i have attended several military ceremonies, the most recent of which was a friend's brother's boot camp graduation, where they prayed in the name of jesus christ. that to me is the biggest violation of church and state; it is a case of the state CLEARLY sanctioning one particular religion over others. my friend's family is christian, but his brother was atheist and many of the other soldiers were non-christians as well. my master never openly identified as buddhist while serving (to this day, his dog tags say "catholic"), despite having served over a decade as a buddhist, because for him keeping things private was better than dealing with the hassle of going against the presumed christianity that exists in the armed services. i have been wondering for years when someone would finally raise cain about this, and i am not the only person i know to do so; the idea that this guy is just one lone troublemaker is completely false. there are a LOT of people who have had similar experiences and feel similarly about the situation. hopefully some good will come of this. to say that we should respect and honor our troops means nothing if we don't allow our troops to do their jobs without facing harrassment or discrimination; unfortunately those things still exist in many areas - for women, for homosexuals, for non-christians, among others. thankfully this particular area of discrimination, which is often the least challenged, is being confronted.
