I'm watching Rev J Wright speaking right now (CNN) as he is addressing the NAACP in Detroit.He is not getting very much applause or audible support, this is interesting.

Sanity -> RE: Wright, NAACP (4/27/2008 5:01:07 PM)

I'm watching on Fox. He claimed that the NAACP is perfectly colorblind...

You might want to check your audio connection, I heard a lot of audience support in the form of applause, singing, and so forth.

His often repeated unbank the fire reference was a great lead in to the final call for positive change. And his choice of words, ranging from the 'Irish comment' to the final Obama motto was brilliant.

Like Dick Gregory, guaranteed to offend those who most need to be offended.

Apparently other people appreciated his speech too....

When he was talking about Africans being "right-brained" and Europeans being "left-brained".... It just left me (being a psychology major in college) just shaking my head. His ideas on education are also way off...it's almost laughable. The problem in schools today is not learning style...it is motivation. Sure it might be learning style issues for some students. But for the vast majority, the problem is motivation.

He's talking about psychology studies in the 1970s. That stuff is very primative in the field of cognitive psychology because before the 1970s, psychology was based on behavior. So most of these studies were from a behaviorist perspective. Recent studies (1990s through today) show different results and propose several different theories and are more advanced than simply saying "Africans have right-dominated brains."

Seriously....this guy hasnt a clue what he's talking about.

popeye1250 -> RE: Wright, NAACP (4/27/2008 9:55:20 PM)

These people like Wright and Jesse Jackson and the Reverand Al aren't "Preachers" they're political Hacks!
And if Obama gets the nod, thanks a lot Democrats for four more years of Bush through McCain!
Why don't the Dems just get a Circus clown and nominate him?

LotusSong -> RE: Wright, NAACP (4/27/2008 10:11:57 PM)

Yes, I'm watching him too.  If anything tanks Obama.. it'll be him.

awmslave -> RE: Wright, NAACP (4/27/2008 10:32:30 PM)

I agree with the pastor: he was unjustly attacked and degraded using a out of context soundbite. This is how black pastors preach: they are agressive, forceful, sometimes use hyperbole. Is Mr. Wright running for president?

Well he's all appologetic now.
He's doing the Michael Richards shuffle.

cyberdude611 -> RE: Wright, NAACP (4/28/2008 12:00:30 AM)

Obama has been listening to this nonsense every week for the past 20 years. And then you wonder why he refuses to wear the American flag lapel pin? You wonder why his wife says she is for the "first time" proud to be an American?

If Obama wins 2008, the GOP has 2012 in the bag. Obama will be the most anti-American administration in history. It will be like 1976 and 1980. People hated the GOP so much in 1976 because of Nixon so they voted in Jimmy Carter. Then by 1980 everyone was running, not walking, but running to Ronald Reagan. Same thing is going to happen here.

 Well I listened for about ten minutes and didn't hear support, maybe I caught it during a quiet time or smoke break?I did not like what I heard from him btw.

He specifically cited well known current research, naming works by Hale and others from 1994, not 1970.... either your superior education didn't bother to inform you about them, or you are deliberately lying about what he said.

Are you saying that black people are incapable of listening quietly for more than a few minutes?

What you heard from him was designed to make people like you uncomfortable.

I really wouldn't put quite so much stock in this. There are many people that view church as a plae of worship, and as a social/charitable group. It's not that the views of the church don't matter as much as they aren't a high priority. Example: I would bet that a very high percentage of young Catholics use birth control, even though our Pope basically thinks it's murder. Thats his view ... I'm there to worship, and because our church does a lot of good works.

Might want to give Senator Obama the same basis benefit of doubt on this one.

Now, your views on education, I completely agree with. I attended a football factory highschool, and that after a life setback that also set my education back. When I moved to Texas with this family, I quickly discovered that their educational expectations were very high, and they would accept no excuses ... and that coming up short meant staying in your room, with your books, until you got up to speed. This, combined with the motivation of parental love, is a strong combination.

As a twenty-something, I have to laugh at all the "reasons" the system doesn't work ... when the only real reason is that so many young people don't care and don't try.

cjan -> RE: Wright, NAACP (4/28/2008 6:27:55 AM)

Don't be so quick to judge Wright or, by association, Obama. I suggetst y'all watch the Bill Moyers interview with Wright which aired on PBS last Friday. Here is the link.
http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/04252008/watch.html

I know those who are bigotted or already have their minds made up or have an axe to grind won't watch it, or won't watch it with an open mind. Nothing new there. I just refuse to debate or discuss issues with folks whose minds are already made up.  I know there will be the usual comments about my mind being made up. But, the fact is, I had one opinion of Wright, having seen only the excerpts and sound bites from the recent news stories about his "inflamatory" statements to his congregation regarding "Goddamn America", but I have an entirely different opinion after watching the Moyers interview. Even his "goddamn America" comments make sense when they are not taken out of context in the sermon he was giving.

Do you remember how much hell was raised when the Bell Curve came out in 1994?  YOu would never hear a white poltician citing that today, so the "Reverend" (I hate that title) shouldn't be citing this nonsense either.

kittinSol -> RE: Wright, NAACP (4/28/2008 7:02:06 AM)

I'm not saying this exclusively to you, slaveboy, but this country seriously needs a reality check.

As Scalia would say: "Get over it.".

Marc2b -> RE: Wright, NAACP (4/28/2008 7:17:39 AM)

I listened for a little while but quickly became bored and switched over to the Simpsons. I did check back occasionally but he was babbling some nonsense about how Europeans play music versus how Africans play music and there was also something about Europeans being left brained while Africans are right brained. It sounded to me like typical bigoted racial theory bullshit to me.

Hmmm.... According to Wright, Europeans are left Brained and Africans are right brained. According to science right handed people are left brained and left handed people are right brained. Therefore, being left handed, I am right brained and therefore African. Does this mean I can apply for slavery reparations?

kittinSol -> RE: Wright, NAACP (4/28/2008 7:19:28 AM)

It all began in Africa.
