when my mom was alive i sent her flowers on my b-day with a "Thanks, Mom" note. I am so glad i did.

OMG, that is so sweet!

I don't recall my mom asking what I wanted for my birthday once I was grown.  She always thought of things herself.  If she were alive and asked me what I wanted, I'd tell her just a card, a phone call, or the chance to sit down with her and ask her all the questions I never got to while she was alive without her getting defensive about it.

Thank you, CJan, and I noted the adjective "big," just so you know. That's a black mark, mister.

What would you do if it was your b-day? One of the cruises you mentioned or the spa day? Are you a metrosexual, perhaps? Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Thanks for the good wishes

Of course, I meant "big" in the "great" or "grand" sense.

What would I do ? Well, if I had to choose between a short cruise and a day at the Spa, I guess it would come down to how much time I had and travel considerations. You being in Iowa, of course you'd have to fly to get your, ummm feet wet.If it was a straight up choice, I would do the cruise. I  resisted going on one for years until a friend booked one for us. Norwegian Cruise Line out of Miami ( that was easy) 3 nights, 4 days to Key Weird and Cozumel. We had a blast. Cruises can be fun because it's an opportunuty to meet new folks too. But, ya can't beat a day at a good Spa, either. Make sure it's a good spa. Ask around. Too many expen$ive Spas hire inexperienced staff , pay them penuts and burn them out.

Wtf is a metrosexual, ya perv ? I know what felching is, but...that sounds really sick ! What do y'all get up to in those corn fields ?

Well...my birthday is right AFTER Christmas...so its never been a bog deal either. Sometimes it sucks because instead of  two decent gifts like my brother got, Id get two crappy gifts because no one had the money to buy two good ones right back to back. Other times, it was really neat, cause Id get one AWESOME gift because they'd combine the money theyd have spent on two decent gifts and get one really great one. Of course, that was when I was a kid...now I get a hallmark card. I am however, getting a brand new toilet for mothers day this year.

Ghita, you rock and you deserve so much! My son's b-day is also right after; it's so difficult. We try to keep it special, but honestly it can be hard. Now that he's a little older, we do a summer party and that helps. He's pretty cool about it.

A new toilet, huh?! I think it's a plumb dandy gift! (Sorry, tee hee.) Now, can you get them to leave the lid down?

You're loved, Bounty, not a damn thing you can do about it.

I agree with the surprise party hard limit. Someone would probably get hurt.

Thanks for your response, DesFIP! The 5 things I asked for I ask for every year. It's a joke between us, although I think she's finding less humor in it. Perhaps I should amend...

If I asked the offsprings for improved grades I believe I would get smited...smoted...

extinguished by the vortex caused by the subsequent rolling of the eyeballs. Does it work for you?

Happy early b-day to you, angelikaJ! What do you think of flowers sent on your b-day? Does it seem really sweet or last-minute-ish? I guess it prolly depends who they're from.

my birthday was last Monday and my daughters made it fun all day. they turned it into a scavenger hunt for my presents by leaving clues and hints with family and friends. my last gift from them was tickets for a friend and me to a taping of Jerry Springer.

i cannot wait to see what they plan when i turn 40 next year.

Hmmm riding or push? (I mean the lawnmower, ha ha!)

I finally got a self-propelled, but it's been my experience that women aren't usually allowed to step one toe on anything with ignition keys or a steering wheel...

Mine is just around the corner too, Thursday in fact, so I know how you feel subtee.  My mom usually takes me out to lunch for my birthday and then we go shopping together, have a mother-daughter day out.  It's nice since her bday is 2 weeks before mine, so we often celebrate together.  If I had to give her ideas for what I want, I usually suggest something that I've been wanting, something that I won't go out and buy for myself because it's not practical.

~hugs for you~

You know, I have not lived in the same vicinity as my family for the past 24 years. Last year, my folks and my brother moved here to Iowa from California. (Yes, on purpose!) It has been so cool to sit and talk and get out old albums...that is a gift!

Google Web definition:

Definitions of Metrosexual on the Web:

  • An urban male with a heterosexual orientation who rejects many macho attributes often linked to masculinity.

  • Metrosexuality is the trait of a sophisticated man who has a strong aesthetic sense and spends a substantial amount of time and money on his appearance and lifestyle. ...

Ha ha subtee! There was a beautiful woman in Australia that rode the ride-on naked who used to live in the house I moved into. The owners lived across the waterfall and they told us they would tease when they heard the ride-on going that the husband would need to go collect the rent or whatever thing to get over there right then.

My mother is great on the gift front. I could ask her for exactly what I want, within reason and she will get it for me. I am grateful she is alive, that is a huge gift. She lost her mom when she was young and I am so glad I still have her here.

I love the gifts of trees and things. It is so cool to watch them grow. I was a tree-planter one summer, planting Christmas trees. One place was so rocky they let us take some of the baby trees home. I planted three at my folks place. One didnt work out but the other two are mature trees now. It is so cool to watch them grow. I gave my dad some hyacinth bulbs this past Christmas and he told me they are blooming in their yard now.

I love the photography gift thing too. Decent frames are available for not too much money if funds are tight. I like to make gifts especially when the money is not floating around all extra like. I knit slippers this past Christmas as gifts. My dad writes songs and poems for special birthdays, they are quite good really, lol.

Happy birthday subtee, may it be full of magic!

It's your birfday, it's your birfday...

Metrosexuals can look gay but they are straight. I mean the straight metrosexy's, the gay ones are gay, lol.

Sometimes I imagine what it would be like to work in a men's shop like that. Help men dress cool and get a commission for the big bucks they spend. I think that could be fun!
