subtee -> I hate my birthday (4/29/2008 8:52:31 AM)

Which is imminent. (Hear that? It’s the theme song from “Jaws.”)

My Mom wants to know what I want for my birthday, which I would rather ignore or spend in the fetal position with a bottle of PS (Hippie knows what I mean). I gave her five great ideas, which for reasons which escape me, she has rejected. They are: 1) All new furniture. 2) An in-ground pool. 3) A new vehicle. 4) Professional landscaping for the yard. 5) An addition for a great room/kitchen. Well, she asked.

Anyway, to get her off my old, creaky, arthritic back, what would you want for your b-day if it was looming? I’d like to know about y’all, so think of things you would want and they must be from your Mom; if your ideas are kinky, filthy, perverted and/or deprived…CMail me on the other side and I will…think about them.

Time for a highball and a nap...

Thanks, friends.

Personally, I always ask for gift cards to my favorite restaurants, or better yet those Visa spendable anywhere ones. My budget is a tad tight and those let me go out and enjoy a dinner out somewhere for my birthday without having to do with ON my birthday.

sirsholly -> RE: I hate my birthday (4/29/2008 9:15:19 AM)

when my mom was alive i sent her flowers on my b-day with a "Thanks, Mom" note. I am so glad i did.

subtee -> RE: I hate my birthday (4/29/2008 9:16:47 AM)

That's a great idea! Is that what you would like if your b-day was soon?

Unfortunately, she won't do that because she thinks I'll spend it on the kids or for something practical and she wants me to use it for me. She's awesome like that.

That is such a cool idea! I'll bet she blubbered...like I am a lil bit right now.

Thank you for that.

Happy Birthday subtee! [sm=birthday.gif]

My mother is not with us anymore, so I will go with what I tell my sister, neices and nephews. I want journals, hair pretties (Well now, I just want HAIR! lol) maybe one of those visa cards, so I can spend it the way I want. Earrings, and now I want a pair of sunglasses to match every outfit I have lol I found some red ones the other day, but they were too small, they were childrens.

I guess my point is, I do not want anyone spending a lot of money on me. I would love a new photo of them, and maybe they can place it in a nice frame.  I love those!

In any case, Tee, I hope your birthday brings you a day of happiness, that last throughout the year.

KatyLied -> RE: I hate my birthday (4/29/2008 9:48:18 AM)

I would like a rose bush tree or some other sort of small flowering tree for my yard.
Or a pair of Clark's sandals.

btw

ChainedExistence -> RE: I hate my birthday (4/29/2008 9:48:54 AM)

My family loves gift cards..Just think about what you enjoy....
Book lovers- Amazon, Borders, Barnes and Noble
Restaurants- pick your favorite place to dine, or get desserts or drinks
Music Lovers-I-tunes cards, your favorite CD,
While your mother obviously can't do the whole yard, most greenhouses sell gift cards you can use for flowers and so on
And while she can't  help you add that new room, maybe a gift certificate for a hardware store would be great...some new paint, kitchen cabinet hardware and so on can do a lot to make your old space feel new..
My mom just gave me a gift certificate for a pedicure, which is a luxury I can rarely  indulge. I appreciated that a lot.
Sometimes the silliest things can be the best present- like one year, I got Christmas lights (my birthday is in the Spring) but I'd complained the year before that when Christmas rolled around, I never had the extra cash for new lights...so my brother bought them for me at the after Christmas sales and saved them till my birthday. That was really cool.
Think along these lines:
1.What do you already enjoy- and would enjoy more of?
2. What do you rarely buy or get to do that you might like the means to get?
3. What obscure thing would they never think to get, but would give you a little boost?
4. What's something that would just make your day to day life easier, or something you've been meaning to get around to buying but haven't (Like one year, my young brother got me numbers for my house).
And maybe in the future...keep a sort of wish list ..that way when someone asks, you can name something easily. I do that for giving gifts too-..Like when I hear a family member mention something in passing, I write it down and I can use that later to buy something I know they'll like. (They always say..HOW did you know I wanted this? I didn't even ask for it! But I know they actually did mention it, maybe months earlier in a random comment.)
Happy Birthday! Hope you get a great gift!

cjan -> RE: I hate my birthday (4/29/2008 10:00:45 AM)

tee, you are in your prime, you big silly.

The only birthday I dreaded was my 30th. I had just arrived in Key West from Chicago 2 weeks before and thought life was gonna be downhill from there. I had no idea that a new life of adventure and debauchery was just about to begin.

As for a gift...perhaps what you suggested is beyond what yer mammie wants to spend ? Doh !

Do you like to travel ? There are all kinds of trips that you can take that are within most peoples' budgets. Even an overnight or weekend to a Resort Spa. Or forget the overnight, if that is a concern budget or timewise. A day at the Spa can be a mini vacation in itself. Also, these days when the dollar is taking such a beating, cruises are a better value than ever. Even a three day cruise can be a blast. I like Norwegian Cruises ( you do what ya want when ya want). And then , of course, there's Mexico. Ahhh, Mexico. Always a bargain and so many choices of where to go in that wonderful country.

And, oh yea, Happy Birfday !

I dig this idea! Photos are the "artwork" on the walls at my house. Is that true for you too? Or do you have special spots for pics of the ones you love?

That is really cool; what an awesome brother to remember and to save them for you. And now you're thinking about him at your b-day and also during the holidays. Sweet!

YourDomNow -> RE: I hate my birthday (4/29/2008 10:20:51 AM)

My birthday is 3 days before christmas, so honestly, all these years, birthday hasnt really been all that much, even while I was married..
Life is precious and short as it is....all ive ever really wanted for my birthday was something thoughtful....just put a little thought into it...and im happy....its simple really..doesnt matter what the gift is..as long as it comes from the heart.

subtee -> RE: I hate my birthday (4/29/2008 10:21:45 AM)

Thank you, CJan, and I noted the adjective "big," just so you know. That's a black mark, mister.

What would you do if it was your b-day? One of the cruises you mentioned or the spa day? Are you a metrosexual, perhaps? Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Thanks for the good wishes

Thank you for that! This was rather a clumsy attempt of mine to, uh, mine you folks for who you are, what you like. If you care to tell me, what would you wish for?

ghitaPVH -> RE: I hate my birthday (4/29/2008 10:27:40 AM)

Well...my birthday is right AFTER Christmas...so its never been a bog deal either. Sometimes it sucks because instead of  two decent gifts like my brother got, Id get two crappy gifts because no one had the money to buy two good ones right back to back. Other times, it was really neat, cause Id get one AWESOME gift because they'd combine the money theyd have spent on two decent gifts and get one really great one. Of course, that was when I was a kid...now I get a hallmark card. I am however, getting a brand new toilet for mothers day this year.

I always tell people I want clothes....all year I spend money buying clothes for the kids and never get myself anything...and if I walk into a clothing store..I immediatly go to the kids department anyway...so the only way I ever get nice new clothes for myself is if someone else buys them. gift cards to the hair and nail salon work well for me too....

I so agree with this. What might that be for you? I like Katylied's idea too because you might always think of the peeps who gave it to you as it grows:

Happy BD tee,I try to treat mine as just another day but those around me keeps doing little things to reminding me that I am another year older cards, presents etc....My hard limit is no surprise BD partys,I just hate the s*it ...

DesFIP -> RE: I hate my birthday (4/29/2008 10:30:42 AM)

Does any furniture store near you offer gift cards? Maybe you can't afford to replace everything, but this could be a start towards one new piece.

My daughter asked me what I wanted for Mother's Day. I told her all B's and above.
Told my son I would be happy if he can just get his history grade into the C category. He's got B's and up in everything else but is barely passing history.
