Yeah the Cream Ale is pretty good but I’ve always preferred the pilsner. It appears to be one of those love it or hate it beers (rumors that it is merely bottled water from the Genesee River are untrue). Actually, I’ve always been more of a wine drinker than a beer drinker and I find most beers undrinkable (I loath Budweiser) but a cold Genny goes down nice on a hot summer day.

On the subject of bad beers – the absolute worse that I have ever tasted was some liquified crap named Meisterbrau. I haven’t seen it around for a while but it wouldn’t surprise me if they went out of business. How awful was this shit? Let me put it this way: if you held a gun to my head and gave me a choice between drinking a  can of Meisterbrau or a gallon of moose piss that has been setting in the hot sun for three days...

Natürlich.  I hope to make it to Köln some day, and listen to Kölsch and try the bier. But, to be honest, were I around that area, I'd be drinking Rheingauers. Yum. Especially from Rauenthal.

Status: offline 		Guiness of course! Sapporo & a NZ brew that was available up here 20 some odd years ago...Leopard. A while back there was a good dark beer available called Boreal.

As to the worst beer...Dow. I am sure the chemical company of the same name made that shit!

But I can tell you the best mass-produced American beer, without a doubt, is Sam Adams Light.

You sure those rumours aren't true?   I've never had the Meisterbrau experience. I can't deal with beer-flavored water. That includes all the Coors, Rolling Rocks, Millers, A-Bs, and so on. Virtually all Mex beer is only just tolerable if I'm sitting on the Zocalo in Oaxaca or somewhere. Bohemia and the aforementioned Negro Modelo are OK, Pacifico too (for a lager).

Guinness seems to be real popular. I think of stouts, etc. as coldweather/country beers. I get that licorice flavor, which I don't all that much care for. I'll stick with the ales and Hefeweiße and the occasional lager.

Come over around Karneval. Much fun to be had.
And to be honest, I am not much of a beer drinker, I prefer wine, however, Kölsch (the beer, not the language) will allways hold a special spot in the hearts of people born and bred here.
If you get here, we can share a good bottle of Rheingauer.

Sorry, sparkplug, not gonna be baited into a hijack.

Darcy had a whole list of stuff which never appears in my area, and probably not even the whole continent. I'd love to try some of them. I had a couple good draught Bitters when I was last in the UK. John Bull was one.

LondonArt mentioned Chimay, which is here, but I don't recall ever seeing one of the Rocheforts.

Tonight I picked up a 6 each of Sam Adams Hefeweiß, Red Hook ESB, Sweetwater (Atlanta) IPA, and Terrapin (Athens) Rye Pale Ale (a favorite). I'll taste two or three tonight, but I lack the vocabulary to describe them. I can describe wines 'till the cows come home, but not beers.

Status: offline 		Tasted the Sam Adams wheat beer and the Sweetwater IPA last night.

Sorry, Sam, the Weihenstephaner is in a whole other class. Still my gold standard.

The IPA was a hop-bomb. Some residual sweetness in the nose and on the palate helped give it some balance, but the hops dominated the brew. The nose was "perfumy". Beautiful amber color. Would be an acquired taste for me.

Status: offline 		Well, not to toot my own horn too much, I am an award winning brewer of barley wines, and I try to try an awful lot of different beers. I do love the traditional styles, but lately I'm particularly keen on some of the "extreme" beers coming from the American craft brewers (though the Danes are actually starting to outdo them). In the past couple of years there is an emerging style called Imperial IPA, or sometimes Double IPA. Of these, my two favourites are:

Southern Tier Unearthly Imperial IPA (http://www.southerntierbrewing.com/beer_11.htm)
Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA (http://www.dogfish.com/brewings/Occasional_Rarities/120_Minute_IPA/15/index.htm).

These are not for the faint of heart--very high alocohol and hopped beyond belief. Both also brew more traditional versions of IPA which are also excellent.
