What do you think is the best beer in the world? Me, I got a taste for Wheat Beer after I walked down from Hitler's Eagles' Nest in Berchtesgaden to the train station and had myself a nice cold Koenig Ludwig Weissbier and a huge (about a foot wide and maybe 10 inches high) soft pretzel. Then I discovered Weihenstephan when I went up to Freising (town just north of Munich) and visited the brewery. It's the oldest brewery in the world, founded 1040 AD.

My pick is Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier. Just a beautifully crafted, rich, cloudy amber-colored (multiple superlative adjectives) nectar. What is really cool about it, it's nearly as good the next day. That is extremely rare, maybe even unique, in my experience.

Carona or Peroni, although I like Red Stripe and Guinness.  I'm also fond of Taj Majal and Flying Horse.

My favorite beer is Stella Artois, Taj Mahal is also a nice beer...and Kuntsmann, Chilean beer from Valdivia southern Chile...I keep an open mind so I am always open for new favorites.

When I was in Mexico.. it was PAcifico.  Occasionally find it here.. always takes me back to the 50' steel-hulled sailboat I spent a week on, with good friends :)

I didn't care for Presidente, but I'd be hard pressed to say why.

Have you tried Yeungling? Domestic, brewed in PA and FL.  Not bad :)

Domestic:  I used to love (and drink alot of) Augsberger, pride of the Huber Brewery, Monroe, WI.  Now its just a "brand".  Anchor Steam and Sam Adams make drinkable American beers.

Imported:  D.A.B. and Hacker-Pschorr Brau, both tastes brought back by Ms.Emp from her time living in Germany.  Stella Artois and Blue Moon are both good, but the "Belgians" are getting boring.  If you can find fresh Negro Modelo, and you like dark beer, grab it.

But the BEST beer in the world?  That's easy.  It was an ice-cold Pabst Dark on a 97 degree day at the Wisconsin State Fair, with an ear of Lion's Club roasted corn dripping with butter in one hand, and your best girl (in a tube top showing off her new tat on her shoulder and a bit of cheek under her short-shorts) in the other hand.  I won't trade that memory for a brewery...let alone a beer. *GRIN*

That Blue Moon is on my list to try. I have the Hoegaarden as my reference for Belgian whites, but I dunno if that's fair. I really should start keeping notes. I used to do that for wine (I got into wine back around 82 or so, in Houston)(still enjoy good wines)(could be a reeeaaaalllllly long discussion hehehe ). I'll check my mail later, TY.

I like HOegaarden too..

Emp..I'm still new to the Belgian WHites.. I like the creamy taste to them.

Also..NOTHING beats a properly poured Black and Tan.........

I dunno why, maybe 'cause I dig the city so much, but I'm prejudiced in favor of the Munich beers. Bavarian beers in general. An acquired taste, but one which I like to indulge, is the smoked beer from Bamberg, Franconia.

I don't much care for stouts. Kinda like drinking licorice to me.

Terrapin Brewery, in Athens, makes a pretty good rye beer.

Greedy, try a slice of orange in your Hoegaarden.  You probably know that trick.  Also....seeing as you like your black and tans, there's an Irish Hoe -- Hoegaarden with a Guinness head.  But its more fun to order than to drink (sort of like a Slow Comfortable Screw, or Sex on the Beach).

yep..orange in my belgians..(that reminds me... met some belgian guys at the bar the other night,,.sposed to hang out with them tomorrow...no, at this moment, I have no plans to put oranges IN any of them...)

I must say, that my absolute favorite beer prior to May 5 (Cinqo de Mayo!) is Warschteiner (sp?).  Great German beer!  Blows St. Pauli Girl out of the water!  Well, imho anyways...After May 5, its Corona with lime.  But then, I am not a real big beer drinker, I prefer the hard stuff.  [image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m9.gif[/image]

Warsteiner. Think Warstein is in the Rhineland. I've been to the place commemorated by Cinco de Mayo.

Hey Greedy (and everyone else) while we are talking about the REALLY IMPORTANT STUFF -- What is your perfect black and tan?   The traditional is Harp and Guinness, the beer below and the stout floated on the top...a mix just favoring the Harp.  Right?   But like I say, the Hoe/Guiness is pretty good..   What makes it perfect?

In my neck of the woods, the Harp and Guinness combo is known as a Half and Half. Black and Tans are made with Bass and Guinness.
