That being said, i'm sorry but i think it's a very good thing smoking has been banned in public buildings in my state. Why you might ask? Because i am a bouncer, have been for almost 20 years, and am so much happier that i don't walk out of my venues at the end of the night with things like smoke induced headaches, bronchial issues, and yes, oh the most fun one, the nosebleeds i was starting to get.
For you people that just go to a bar to have fun and drink everyonce in a while, a smoking environment is not neccessarily all that harmful to you. For someone like me, who is in that environment night after night, it's horrible.
No my rights are not neccessarily any more valuable than a smoker's rights are. But here's the thing, you have the ability to walk outside of the bar and have a smoke correct? That doesn't harm you in anyway, nor is it a huge imposition. However, you blowing your smoke inside of a closed room full of people is a huge imposition to all of us that don't want it in our lungs.
When they passed this law here, there was alot of speculation that the bars would all go under, when in fact they are doing just fine.
i don't preach to people that they should stop smoking, it's not my place. i wouldn't even do that with someone i was in a relationship with, i would merely ask that they respect my health enough not to subject me to concentrated amounts of it.
Guess what, screw your impositions. Smoking outside is no imposition? Five smokers hiding from the sun or rain under 9 square feet of awning is less than fun. Then there's all the fun of being forcibly segregated from the general population as a social pariah.
i can't imagine that you didn't know that the first place you ever worked as a bouncer hid all the cigarettes, ashtrays, smoke scented leather and wood until they hired you; then surprised you with it.
You work in a coal mine, you expect to breathe coal dust. You work in a "men's club", you expect to run into sweat, lube and cumstains. You work in a bar, you deal with smoke and assholes. Those are the facts of life.
edited to add: sorry to be such a dick at the beginning of this post, i honestly don't mean it as a personal attack and you honestly seem very reasonable... smoking ordinances, especially those in bars have been hot button issues for me since i started working in them since i was 16
ps: there was a definite drop in business when they started seriously cracking down on smoking in bars in san francisco... not to mention the imposition of being able to get one or two drags at a time, because i'm the only person working the bar during the day shift
