Popeye, that may have been the original meaning (I don't know), but it's went way beyond that. There are morons a-plenty that use "gook" to mock anyone even remotely resembling Asian descent.

Ok, so there's some guy in Cleveland who calls people "gooks."
That "bothers" you?

I think they did call Koreans "gooks".  From what I understand it's comes from a word that Koreans have for themselves.  I heard my dad call Vietnamese people slopes and zipperheads.  As far as I know, slope is a slur for Japanese people used in WWII.  I think racial epithets get passed on from one group to the next.  I don't fault McCain for saying this.  If anyone is allowed to use those terms it's people that got shot at by them or in McCain's case tortured by them.  I wonder if their would be the outrage over something like this if it had been Dole calling Germans "krauts" or "jerries".

Yes, bigots and stupidity bother me, popeye.

Aynne -> RE: Latest Democratic Dirty Tricks (5/3/2008 1:02:28 PM)

You haven't popeye?  It was around wayyyy before VietNam.  This is in reference to the Korean Way, oops, "conflict."

it derived from the Korean words "hanguk" and "miguk"[original research?]. Guk is from the Chinese word guo, which means country. "Hanguk" refers to Korea[76] and "miguk" is the common word for the United States.[77] American troops thought "miguk" sounded like "me gook" (i.e. "I am a gook").[

Nice try though, but no free passes on hatred. None.

Aynne, what we're they supposed to say out in the bush, "watch out fellas', here come the North Vietnamese Army Irregulars?
"Gook" means the people they were fighting.
I've never heard Chinese or Japs or Koreans refered to as "Gooks."
And I wonder what the Gooks called us?
Funny, you could blow them to pieces but you can't call them Gooks?
It had nothing to do with a person's "race" it was a designation for the enemy.
And which organisation gets to "designate" what words are "proper" to use?
This sounds like "Political Correctness" raising it's evil head again.

Aynne, sorry but I just try to avoid "political correctness".
Once you think you have it killed off it pops up somewhere else like a fucking Hydra.

I can't do idograms here, but in a life much of it spent in the Far East such terms as "foreign devil", "dog", "right-hand ass wiper" (you gotta know the culture), "black ape" and the ever popular "stinky person" immediately come to mind

Racism isn't the exclusive possession of any given race

Aynne -> RE: Latest Democratic Dirty Tricks (5/3/2008 1:09:55 PM)

Well now that I hijacked this thread...sorry, but yes Level, I agree.   Excusing calling an entire race/ethnicity of people a derogatory term because you were mis-treated by one or some of them? Please...that is weak. If that logic held we women would all be calling men pompous pricks with insatiable egos and we know that isn't true right fellas?
**ducks for cover and hides behind Level..please?

Well, you DID bring some Cheetos, so sure. [8D]

I do understand why McCain is bitter; treat me like that, and I'd be twisted off too. But it's still wrong, IMO.

Alumbrado -> RE: Latest Democratic Dirty Tricks (5/3/2008 1:30:30 PM)

The term that Popeye is championing was coined around a hundred years ago for Filipinos...

Since that time it has become common to use it in derogatory reference to any East Asians.  If it had any politer meaning, maybe its use could be excused, but Aynne has the sense of it when she says 'no free passes'.

My understanding(from my VN vet cousin and other vets)is that gook is Vietnamese for foreigner.

Funny how it(if true) got turned around,on purpose or by chance and used against them.

FR:

Please, everyone, back to topic?

The whole "McCain calls groups of peoples names" isn't a political dirty trick, as I mean in this thread.  Political dynamite, not very wise, all true ... but not a "dirty trick".

Please start a separate thread for your comments on the McCain subject?

It certainly is intended to show disgust with the comment, or am I reading something wrong?

The comments made (or manufacturered) in the post I cited were done specifically to engender disgust and aversion in the voting population for a particular candidate (Hillary Clinton).

I took no stand one way or the other.  I simply pointed out that this was a political "dirty trick" apparently by the Obama campaign.

quote:

ORIGINAL: Aynne

So in all fairness, why is McCain not help to the same lever of accountability and then some? I mean this guy is hardly a public figure and it made you "disgusted" enough to drag it out, so does that extend across party lines?

You need to read my posts closer.  I specifically opened this thread to any political "dirty trick" - even one by McCain.

However, see my comments in my previous post.  McCain's use of unacceptable nouns to describe groups of people, or individual people is not a political "dirty trick".

No, my issue is with political dirty tricks, and the ideological blindness that some - specifically Democrats, specifically Obama Democrats - have about them.

Aynne -> RE: Latest Democratic Dirty Tricks (5/3/2008 6:24:01 PM)

Well then Firm lucky for me I am  not at all an Obama Democrat. Hillary is my girl. However unlike some of my comrades I will if I need to cast my ballot for Obama, none of this "if my pick does not get in I am voting McCain."
As a democrat why another dem would do that is really beyond comprehension ...[:-]

   What a bunch of crap,Firm.

Didn`t you write the thread title?

Ya`ll can`t put the toothpaste back in the tube.

See`n ya try is amusing though.

It`s tough, being associated with and part of the party of dirty tricks, failure and economic recession/depression .I feel your pain.

I haven`t done it myself, but I challenge anyone to google "political dirty tricks" and see what pops up.Republicans have a long and famous history of dirty tricks.

Could you be a little more clear?

If you haven't done it ... why should anyone else?

And do you believe a google search to be some sort of absolution?  Should I call you Pontius Pilate?

Try this one: Democratic Dirty Tricks

Does this link prove anything?

The point Orion made earlier is still very much valid.  And you are another example of the very type of person he means, and that I am aiming this thread towards.

Missokyst -> RE: Latest Democratic Dirty Tricks (5/3/2008 9:50:02 PM)

[sm=marionette.gif]I hardly think that is the sole dominion of democratic parties.  Republicans are just as guilty and follow the company line just as if they had strings attached.  What is more interesting is the fact that they just do not recognise it.  Somehow a persons own political party seems to be dulled to the stench of dirty tricks and they cannot smell it in their own party.  Perhaps the years of crap have dulled the scent glands.

The reason that I posted this thread (and will continue to update it) is that there is a certain segment of the population - and posters here - who seem to think that "their party" doesn't stink.  To me, this seems especially true of the ones who support Democrats, and even more so of those who support Obama.

Yeh-eahh r-right,a link to a few rightwing bloggers.lol

Are you quoting and sourcing freak`n bloggers, just like Fat Dom Daddy does?

Two words.....

Tisk tisk.......

You say that both parties stink.Perhaps.

It`s a matter of the quality and quantity, that divides the parties, though.

To be fare,I`ll let you find parallels to say,.... the dirty attacks on Muskie`s wife.

Or the dirty attacks on McCain`s wife and McCain himself(by Bush).

Or the dirty swiftboat tricks on Kerry.Or morphing triple amputee Max Cleland`s face into freak`n Saddam Hussein`s face.Bigotted Willie Horton ads  or fake photos ,like the one showing Kerry and Jane Fonda at an anti war rally together.

http://www.camerairaq.com/2003/02/john_kerry_and_.html

Or voter caging, voter intimidation and those nasty fliers that show up in poor neighborhoods just before election day, telling voters you can`t vote if you have traffic tickets or owe child support.

Examples please, not bloggers puking pablum. Not your opinion.

Real examples.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why do I get the feeling you`ll come up short,as Orion often does,when given a fair chance to respond? From experience,I guess.
