Another point : Blair made Labour electable. Remember shuffling old bibliophile Michael Foot, for whom by the way I have enormous respect. Brown ,a dour Left Winger, has simply not lived up to expectations. Eat dirt lefties ! Meatcleaver and those that think like him simply dont realise that this is the 21st century, not the 18th or 19th.

Meanwhile, Germany being rather second half 20th century in its prudence has been going strength to strength. Meat i dont follow your logic. Brown, being left wing, altered the way the banks work. He decided to set up the FSA. Given he has had 10 years as chancellor, how do you now blame the right ?

There is nothing leftwing about Brown, as Chancellor he lived off the financial shanigans of the City and positively encouraged them. The Financial Services Authority is pretty toothless and anyway, it can't regulate the city. It was the hedge funds that were the cause of the credit crunch, though they are the big profiteers from it and the FSA had no jurisdiction over them, they were let loose by the Tory big bang in the city. Brown has simply rubbed his hands as the banks were making money from money, full well knowing that the real economy wasn't pulling up any trees but was fairly stagnant.

The Brit economy is in such a mess after never really recovering from WW2 and then suffering the rise of the metropolitan/liberal trendies who spend spend spend on every lost cause under the Sun. Any govnt has then been forced to rely on the spivery of the banking system. If you cant manufacture it then issue credit to enable the masses to buy from those who can. Something once again I have repeatedly complained about. Causes need to be examined not consequences. We should kiss China's arse not the US.

The right privatised the railways and buses and with that destroyed two manufacturing industries, train and bus manufacturing. Just one example of where Britain differs from its continental neighbours. We buy our buses and trains from them now and guess who is laughing. I can't be arsed to make a list of all the rest but Harold Wilson said in the sixties, you can't have a healthy economy where all the jobs are opening doors for other people.

What I cant grasp is how we went for example from a nation with a major ship building industry to a nation with no ship building industry but a major race relations industry. Same applies to steel, cars, motor bikes etc. We have expert observers and touchy feely sensitive artists galore but a scarcity of real value added doers. I dont think these trends can be blamed on the right wing. Just as the fashionistas know that size zero models can confuse immature women or the race relations experts tell us that the lack of black role models has negative consequences so the constant supercillious denigration of trade coupled with the backstop of a ridiculous welfare system has resulted in the nation we are today. Fractured, quite brutal in many areas and having an elite which is complicit or not confident enough to face down the soppy sentimental idealistic Left Wing ideology that prevails today. Can you imagine a Tory leader in the past saying the equivalent of....lets hug a hoodie, they have feelings too you know ?

I disagree. Macro economic policy in England amounts to this: heavy industry was yesteryear's cash cow; today our competitive advantage on the world is not in heavy industry. The claim that English business does not trust new innovations is bizarre. We're a small nation of the North West coast of Europe - we only have so much money floating around from which to invest. Edited to add: there's a misplaced spot of arrogance in all of this, i.e. the belief that we should be competing on all fronts - put simply, a small nation doesn't hold the resources for such competition. Ultimately, England still punches far in excess of its weight in the world economic and political scene.

Compare Germany to Britain. Its economy is bigger and stronger than Britains and it relies on heavy industry. While Germany was West Germany it was comparable in size to Britain, it took on East Germany which was a dead weight for the first few years and still had a stronger economy than Britain despite its reliance on old fashioned heavy industry. Other countries are small and only have so much money to invest too but it is Britain that invests less than most other countries in R&D and pure science.

I am just wondering; do other European nations have a private system of education at the primary/ secondary level, ie not University, such as exists in the UK today? I believe it is this sector who are responsible for our economic malaise. On average they blossom into welfare scoungers IMO. Look at the Royal Nitwits in the forces.

Great post phatslut, an excellent comment on the state of British industry. Ahem [;)]. MC, you forget that Germany benefitted from massive and prolonged American investment aimed at turning it into just such an industrial powerhouse, while the Finns' ship-building industry was bankrolled by the Soviets. Britain ended the war with nothing but a mountain of debt and an Empire seeking to divest itself of their interference. You do, I believe, have a point regarding R&D but there are many British firms which succeed on the world stage and are global leaders in their sectors (like BT, BP etc) and areas like telecommunications, finance and education are very big earners. But Britain has traditionally been a nation of middle-men and historical success in industry has often been ancillary to overseas trade objectives. One of Britain's biggest problems is wanting to be admired in today's world for yesterday's achievements, respected by foreign nations in the way the former colonial subjects were compelled to - it developed a false sense of superiority, which of course entitles any country to a round zero.
