Coyote attacks toddler in the sandbox.

We also have residential neighborhood sightings of a mountain lion.  How easily we forget what lives on the other side of the shrubbery.

There is also a nice example in the video of how the media puts factual accuracy behind being inoffensive.  The reporter says the girl was treated for punctures on her right cheek, you have to get to the eyewitness statements to learn it was the butt-cheek.

Reminds me of the Azaria Chamberlain mystery.

It's a good thing that Nanny caught the coyote in the act, else she may have been the prime suspect in that child's disappearance!

They weren't camping in the Australian boondocks, Sanity.  It's a little neighborhood playground.

But people have encroached into the  wildlifes territory when we do so we have to expect clashes, the reason they often come into neighbourhoods and loose some of their fear of humans is because of the availability of easy sources of food that is tossed by people or from garbage that in not secured to prevent wildlife from accessing ...this allows them to get used to associating the smell of humans with food...eventually  tearing down the natural fears they have of human ...if  easy  food sources are not made available to predatory or scavenger type  animals they will retreat to the wilderness areas and avoid humans...we are to blame as a society  when incidences like this occurs....you want to help make changes start attending city council meetings  push for stricter garbage regulation....take a look at the park/playground where this occured ..is there open garbage cans/businesses that maybe tossing unsed food into open bins  or garbage set outside in the neighborhood in plastic bags or cans that are accessible to wildlife in the park and surrounding area

So where have humans ever built anything that wasn't wilderness before we got there?

I've got a big coyote somewhere in the woods behind the house, but as far as risk goes, dog bites are still a much bigger worry.  http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/duip/biteprevention.htm.

Plagiarism is one of the higher forms of flattery, O59.  Thank you.

Nature isn't bad.  It is however, wild.  The rules are completely different, and we are not special, important, or the automatic peak of the food chain.  A lot of people seem to forget that.  Incidents like this throw up a little perspective.

As for "kill-em-all," wasn't that St. Patrick's solution to the Irish snake problem?

Yeah, I know. Still it reminded me, there are striking similarities, and the Nanny may not have been believed had the coyote gotten away with its little feast.

I had a dog once named Jake, that was part coyote. Jake tore the neighbor's part dingo ear-to-ear one day, when the dingo came on my land. The dingo had been menacing the neighborhood, so it was a good thing to all except its owner.

I had to put that animal down though, when it surprised me late one night by leading a pack of dogs into an attack on me.

Sorry, you can't do that.

I'm sorry to hear that.  It's quite possible.  It's one reason why I let my little dogs out to do their business together at night - little more safety in numbers.

Of the dangerous animals, we've spotted lots of coyotes, a few bears and one cougar in our yard.  The only time it concerned us was when we had a mother bear with two cubs hanging around.  We called wildlife control and they eventually trapped them and relocated them.  The bears tore apart the Rubbermaid shed that we kept our garbage in.

A little tongue in cheek ,Popeye.

Here in Jersey,it`s easy to see bears, though they always run away.

Coyotes are vermin and cause a lot of damage.Live stock, ground birds like turkey and quail, domestic pets and sadly, wee ones.

About a year ago, a local man was mauled by a bear. It turns out that he had his dogs with him, off leash. They went running off and attacked the bear-which naturally got pissed off. Said dogs then ran away from brer bear- leading it back to the owner. Who then paid in full for thier sins.

Clearly, we don't need to worry about bears-it's the dogs we need to get rid of.
