'Not one I agree with. In order to be united, there has to be a common goal - can you think of one? There's no Patrie, Fatherland, Motherland, American Dream etc. All I see is people loyal to their town/city.

But this is true of most of Europe. The point of the German fatherland was to impose a state from the top down, rather like Britain is imposed from the top down. This is what they want from the EU, an alliance of self governing peoples joined through trade where dogma, religion and patriotism play no part.

A few of our 17th century weavers have bestowed job specialisation upon us - I type, my grandma pedals, my nephew reads - we're an efficient lot.

Shouldn't you Londoners be on homage duties for your queen?

The common goal is that there is no common goal. Everyone thinks of the north south divide, and forgets London has always had slums and the poor. The north has always head its wealthy merchant classes, mill and mine owners ect. Deep down there isnt much difference between you and i NG. We love our beer, our football, fish and chips and mostly, our heritage.

Maybe its not changed up north as much as down here, yet i still recall a time when working class people left the door key hanging on string, so friends and family could come in and wait. London was a hive of industry including the docks, railways, post office, construction and manufacturing. We even made the worlds best beer at Youngs Brewery in Wandsworth.

Much of that has gone, yet the other major cities have suffered the same fates, mores the pity.

ah but you lot forget - leisure time is up! Over two million people of working age no longer work at all, which is a huge increase in leisure time in just a few decades, an achievement with which I am sure we will be making more progress in the very near future.

There is about 6 million on invalid benefit with plenty of leisure time thanks to Maggie Thatcher cooking the unemployment register. She sis anything to get people off inemployment, even if it would cost more. Such was her cynism and hypocrisy.

No it isn't. The Hanseatic League was a merchantile alliance, a model on which many people in Europe want the EU to be, north south east and west. The only country that has a problem with that appears to be little Britain which can't make up its mind if it wants in or aout. One thing the Hanseatic League wasn't and that is it wasn't nationalistic and it had absolutely nothing in common with Yugoslavia, I'm not sure where you get that from. The Hanseatic League was a bottom up loose alliance, not a top down imposed contralist unitary state like Britain or France. It was multi-national, multi-lingual organisation where nationality, religion or ideology had no part to play.
