ok so My Dear Friend MoGa and I were chatting as Dominas do, gossip, boy chatter, etc and we were talking about fetishes that people have and are they part of BDSM or something different altogether--so we both referrred to a recently watched a re-run of CSI, where the team found a dead man on the road, with a racoon suit on. They didn't understand what a man dressed like that would be out in the middle of nowhere, but yet, there he was. Suffice it to say, what developed was a story about Furries, or Plushies as they are most commonly known. We did some research on this "peticular" play and found it quite amazing. Our first thought was well... but we couldn't have been more wrong.

Participants in “plushie play” have a fuzzy fixation on toys with anthropomorphically human characteristics. A plushie doll might have big doe eyes, a cutesy smile, and human-like breasts and vagina.

Some plushophiles, more commonly known as furries, dress up as animals during sex. Fox, rabbit and kitten costumes with “trap doors” for organs and orifaces are sold and traded at fetish conventions.

What do you think of this practice? Do you consider it an element of BDSM? and would you involve yourself in such play?

*sigh* I hate it when people do this. They post a huge, ignorant, "OMG lookitthis" post on something about me...dozens of people reply...all of them are mistaken....and I feel like I have to post, because oh no, someone is *WRONG* on the internets. Look what you made me do.

Hi. I'm a furry. I think if you're going to rely on CSI for your introduction to a sub culture, consider that your view of it, and related research on it, might be very far off the mark. In fact, what you just said was rather insulting. Of all the people in the thread so far, only RavenMuse and SirJohn seem to have the right idea.

There's furry fandom. Then there's fursuit sex (which CSI referenced) and then there's the stuffed toy love. They're all separate. Furry is just...a label. A way of expression. It's like saying "im goth" or "im alternative". It's an statement to what someone is generally interested in. Furries are not commonly known as "plushies". It's an overlap thing...some furries are into plushies...not every "plushiephile" is a furry. Ditto with the fursuit thing.

I don't own a fursuit, raccoon or otherwise. If I did have one, I damn well wouldn't have sex in it, because they're very hard to keep clean as it is, and also, ew. All of my furry friends...don't have fursuits. Or get turned on by sex in one. Nor, do any of us find ourselves wishing we could screw our stuffed animals. Those sorts of things is like saying "All bdsm subs and doms have foot fetishies. Yes...some people in bdsm do have foot fetishies. It's probably a very small number, though...which is how it is for furry fandom. There's a very small number of people who wear fursuits, an even smaller number than that who have sex in them or want to screw plushies.

If you want to look to the media to explain sub cultures, you might as well get an actual reporter to do it. This is an article about an actual furry convention, and what its like.

As for the discussion...what do I think of it?
Furry fandom: Its a way of expressing my personality. If you're not interested in it, swell, then kindly keep your nose out of it.
Fursuit sex: its not my thing, and its between two adults. So in other words, I don't give a d***.
Plushie sex: its not my thing, and its between an adult and an object. So again, I don't give a d***.
Is it related to bdsm? No. It's related to sex.

And yea...looking back at this post 30 minutes later...I have a habit of strongly wording my opinions. So don't take what I said personally.

Two cents worth...

Furries.... I always thought of that as some really serious cosplay.  If sex were involved, it would kind of be like over the top puppy/kitten play.  I prefer leather and chainmail but I can see doing a fur suit if that tripped my trigger.

Plushies... I'm just not into blowup dolls whether they look like Yulia Nova or Jessica Rabbit.  <nuff said>

People I've heard talk about furry don't represent it as a sexual fetish thing. It appears to be much more like age play in that the person really takes on the persona of the animal. The same way an age player might be not at all interested in sex, but very interested in playing with toys, coloring books etc a furry enjoys releasing their inner animal. Animal play involves growling if someone tries to take a toy or food away, scratching, clawing etc. And just as someone deep into age play headspace cannot immediately snap back to being 47 y. o., someone deep into animal, primal play cannot snap back into being articulate.

Long post goes here.

Pretty much everything he said. The fursuit/yiff/Second Life shit is what people think of when they think "furry" because it's some of the oddest parts of it. Like, when people think BDSM they automatically think rape or sick twisted sex if they have no idea about it.

Just like in BDSM, there are many different types of people in the "furry" life, I guess. Some are way too hardcore (fursuits, thinking they're really animals, etc) and some are just laid back. But it's usually the bad parts that people only notice.

Oh boy... I ought to get the popcorn... but I won't.

Okay.. my pet is a furry.  He is NOT into sex with plushies or yiffing... but he does like the entire anthromorphic scene.  Some of the art is actually quite good (lots of it on the 'net).
He will go to fur cons and I know he'd love to dress up in a fur suit (but he doesn't have one)
Actually, it might be a bit more interesting for pup play if he WAS in a fur suit.
Just to set the record straight, not every furry has sex in a fur suit (or sex with a fur suit) but some of them are certainly into that.
I also have a friend that just got back from a Rubberdoll show - different material, they are dressing as human dolls but still, dressing as something other than what they really are... is it much different?

About the fuzzy wuzzies... I just don't see myself banging a big purple dino or anything else like itfor that matter.  I can see the appeal, just not my cup of tea, unless there is clown make up under it all... LOL

This makes me think of the Entourage episode where Kevin Dillon's character meets a really hot chick, who asks him to pick up her dry cleaning and he can deliver it to her later with a "bonus".  Turns out it's a pink bunny costume, and after debating it with the guys he brings it over to her...figuring she'll be wearing it while he screws her.  The last shot is in her living room through the window, and you see her bent over the sofa, him wearing the suit taking her from behind.  Priceless!

I'm the same way with this kink as with others ... to each his/her own.  The more kinky I discover I am, the more understanding I am of others!  lol

1. I am wondering if once you have kids and live with a lot of stuffed animals, fuzzy eroticism loses its appeal.
2. BDSM is a big world but I am going with those who say that furries are not part of it, unless there are some control/power issues that I am not aware of.
3. I am smiling at the idea of this phone conversation between two dommes, talking about furries and I am wondering if any alcohol was involved :)

I might would consider it an "alternative lifestyle" choice or activity, but personally wouldn't place it under the BDSM umbrella.  There are people who like to "dress up" as all sorts of stuff - sci fi characters, vampires, etc....

What about dressing up like vampires?  I need to fan myself for that one.  Hot!

As for puppy and pony play, I don't count that in the realm of furries or plushies either.  In my mind, it's a whole other kink.

My name is kitten. You could if you felt the need to give me more of a label then kitten call me a furry. Or someone into kitten play or someone that has serious mental delisions for at times thinking shes actually a cat (Its the cat nip...)

I own cat ears many pairs, I own furry cat tails that attach to my plug. I purr when excited I growl when mad or annoyed I make odd little mew and merf noises through out the day with out realizing it. Ive fucked with my tail in, Ive been spanked with my ears on. I didnt really enjoy it that much (tail got to sticky). Everyone Ive been with as a partner has growled when cumming.

As for Do I think its D/s related yes. Every animal in the world fits in to a structure of dominance.  Just as Im always the cute small protect me kitten and my partner is the big bad Cat/wolf/bear/demon/puppy/bird/ bail me out of what ever trouble ive gotten my pretty little paws into this time person.

Fox could define things a lot better -- and tell you how poorly done that CSI episode was -- but furry does not equal wearing a custom, that's a fur-suiter, and a plushiphile is something else again. Fox is a furry, thus his name, but he wears no outfit -- his furryness is a state of mind and a belief system that fit well into his entire life. I can and do use language and behaviors from his subculture in our dynamic because I know it can get reactions that I want but I'm not a furry myself (I'm just fairly big cat like form time to time).

All the Furs I have known have not had anything to do with suits, or sex with anyone in suits. They idenitified with animals, and it was far more a mental thing than an actual physical thing (Like TammyJo said)
It is not something I look for, but it certainly wouldnt be something I would turn away if someone was into it. It isnt necessarily PART of BDSM, it is its own subculture, but so do Vampires, and Adult Babies. That doesnt mean there isnt a good deal of possible overlap. One can be a Sadistic or Masochistic Furry as easily as they can be a Sadistic or Masochistic Vampire... different mindset, same effect.
The CSI episode was showing off the way over the top extreme of the Vegas lifestyles, the Fur conventions and hammed it up to make for good television. I dont think anyone actualy associated with the Furry commnity did anything but rol their eyes and think "Oh great, thats what everyone is going to think of if they  find out what I am into now."
I have the same reaction when they have shows talking about the Vampire subculture, like the bloodbank guy who thought he owned souls or the chick with propheria.

While the others have convered it, there is a large part of the furry subculture that is into BDSM.  I think this is quite possibly because taking on their fursona (furry persona for those not up on the lingo) allows them to get away from the masks and such that many people wear all the time.  Doing this, allows them the freedom to be who/what they really want to be.  It lets the pet be a pet, and the lion rule the jungle.

However, furries are not automatically into any kink, I know a great deal who are very vanilla, and not all furries are into fursuits either.  It's actually a quite diverse subculture.

Personally, I blame it on Aesop and Walt.
