Becks.

Beck's is another one of those InBev brands.

It's in the international style of lagers/Pilseners. Interestingly, St. Pauli Girl is brewed at the same brewery for export only. (odd, because the brewery is in Bremen and the St.Pauli district in Hamburg) I've never seen a Bavarian drink Becks, if indeed it is that readily available everywhere in DE. It's mostly in northern Germany that it's drunk, along with Warsteiner, Bitburger, and a couple other brands being the most popular, according to Wikipedia.

I was in Bremen last summer. The Becks there is one hell of a lot better than the exported stuff I've tasted in the UK. Nothing new there, I guess.

It was quite amusing to openly admit to being a fan of Belgian beer in a town which somewhat resented the 'Belgian' take over of 'their' Brewery. That started a couple of good discussions in bars, and helped my German no end!

If its US Budweiser is chemically low grade piss! Hungarian Bud is vastly superior! Still can't beat Leffe blonde or pint of Uley Old Spot, thick, black & deadly! Must remember to renew my CAMRA membership lol

The earlier link I gave to Eurobeers, the guys' a Brit, and he shreds the Germans for being so unadventurous, brewing supermarket beers and the like. He trashes the Reinheitsgebot as well, justly, IMO.

I'm sipping a Dogfish Head "90 Minute Imperial IPA", 9%. Almost as hoppy as the Sweetwater (see other thread), but a different character to the hops. Not as aromatic, a bit more bitterness on the edge. Clear light reddish-amber.

I have a friend who whips up some hellacious brews, and he's going to give me tips. Yummm, can't wait.

There's no such thing as good beer, let alone best beer....anywhere

I'm slowly beginning to realise that, in this dratted country, the only way to get decent beer is either to spend 750 euros hiring a van and driving it to Belgium and back, or to brew my own, and brew it well. It's the last bit that's the problem. I've never brewed my own beer, I've never had the need. Any tips?

I've never brewed any either. Be a new adventure for me as well. 750 Euros, that sounds pretty dear to me. I rented a Prius for a week in Seattle at Xmas for $USD440.00  There's probably a brewing club or group somewhere close to you. You can join the "brewing lifestyle" hahahaha.

It is expensive; the problem's not so much the car hire, not so much the fuel, but the ferry across the Irish sea.
