One of the purposes on the boards is to get the opinions of others on a given issue.  So... when you come to the boards with a question or two.... are there some people you hope provide their point of view?  Or are you more interested in getting thoughtful opinions?.... or maybe you are looking for something else?

I guess it depends on my motive for starting a thread. Sometimes I just feel like writing and it doesn't matter who posts or whether anyone posts at all to a thread I've begun. Other times, I feel inspired to share something and if it's another poster who has inspired me, then, yes, I'd like to read their thoughts on the particular subject. I don't, as a rule, come to public forums with personal questions as I reserve those for my offline friendships and even then it would be very few and far between. If I can't work something out on my own or with the help of Himself, there are one or two people who I will seek out just because two heads are better than one and they might see something from an objective viewpoint which I've missed because I'm too close to the situation. I don't mind sharing personal experiences or my past, but issues which I still need to resolve are always going to be internal and/or offline for me so that's the venue I prefer for those sorts of things.

How about people that are new (or were new) to the lifestyle.... do you find yourself looking at the experienced people ... or specific people first?

If I start a thread, I read it in order of answers given. New to the boards or BDSM wouldn't cause me to change that habit. Hell, most folks come into BDSM with some sort of life experience that is going to be different from my own so there is usually going to be something interesting to take away from another's perspective. I don't know what they know, so perhaps I'll be enlightened or get to read one of those rare and precious gems.

I don't go searching out to see if particular people have responded or not. If someone else has started a thread, I may or may not read part or all of a thread before I answer it myself and there are a few folks whom I will almost always read regardless of the subject content just because I respect their writing abilities and/or perspectives and want to read what they have to say.

Are you satisfied with the quality of the answers that you get on the forums?

Actually, more than satisfied and getting less surprised at the depth of the answers I've gotten to some of the threads I've started. At first, I didn't expect such, but, now I rather do. Perhaps I've been a bit spoiled by the quality and high caliber writing by so many of the regulars here. I mean, something keeps me coming back and as much as I enjoy them, it's really not the emoticons. [sm=yeahright.gif] [:D]

(fast reply)

Greetings,

I don't generally post my questions to the forums.  I've found that if I have questions or concerns I call up my mentors and we have a quasi-face to face (ie: on the telephone) chat about them.

To a very minor degree, I do look for a bit of validation from the posters here.  There are a few people who I've come to respect (well, as much as you can having never met them face to face or had a real conversation with them - lol) and I do look for their posts on topics that I find interesting.  When I find that there is a disagreement between one of these people and my own opinions on a topic, it does give me pause and I reflect upon my reasons and take into consideration their ideas.  Sometimes I adjust my view and sometimes I don't.  I enjoy that posters to this forum can stimulate me to think and rethink my ideas.  In some ways it has led to growth on my part.

I also find that  I post to threads that seem to be very one sided or have 'over looked' a key point in the argument.  In these cases I am offering my opinion and knowledge to others.  I might have even posted perspectives which I don't really believe in just for the sake of presenting the other side of things.  The reason I say 'might' is only because I can't think of any off the top of my head but I know I have done this.  Please don't mistake my intent, I'm not trying to cause an argument with this but rather just trying to play a cyber version of devil's advocate.

There are many topics on this site that I read all the way through, compose a response and then delete it, having realized that I'm not adding anything new to the conversation.  I generally don't see a reason to re-say what someone else has already said.  Well, mostly - lol.

Wickad

PS - it should also be added that there are many folks on this site who've I've classified as a 'waste of air' and whose opinions I tend to watch for the exact opposite reason I would watch those posts of people I respect.  If one of these people seems to be agreeing with something that I also agree with ... well, I start to really re-examine my opinion - lol.

Owner4SexSlave -> RE: mmmmmmmm I wonder (5/12/2008 12:51:01 AM)

KnightofMists,

I have come to the boards and started threads for a variety of different reasons.  Be it questions regarding a specific activity, plans and ideas for St. Andrews Crosses, even advice on a personal problem.  Times when I looking for opinions, perhaps times for points of view.  Hell, even times when I have posted things because it's not something I care to share or talk about with Vanilla friends.  There have been Threads I've started to give food for thought, and see if anybody else thought or felt similar or different.

Regardless of the reasons, I have found that many people will make good honest posts.  I take the time to read anything and everything that people post on a thread I started.  If anything, it gives me something more to take into consideration and think about.   When I post a Question, I'm not looking for somebody to feed me a line of bullshit, I'd much rather hear what they honestly have to say or express.

I also enjoy reading many of the threads, and at times they make me stop and think about new things or see things in a slightly different light.   There have been moments that have deeply touched my heart, moments that have made me laugh my ass off, even moments that provoked or upset me.  There have been moments when I just sat here and rolled my eyes at reading stupidity.   There have been moments, when I know I have helped somebody.  Times when others have helped me.  There are times even when I ended up feeling like a complete Jackass over something I have posted.

In all honestly, I've seen some really amazing people come and go from the message board.   There are some people I miss reading their posts to this day.   There are some specific people with experience that I look forward to reading their posts on a topic.

eyesopened -> RE: mmmmmmmm I wonder (5/12/2008 1:16:26 AM)

i don't post questions on the board but i read threads that interest me or may apply to something i'm going through or have gone through.

i don't look for specific people's replies.  There are many whose opinion i value but i learn from looking at many points of view.  i think i actually learn more from reading opinions that i disagree with because it make me think of why they would hold that opinion.  There have been many instances where i have learned something, maybe something about myself, by more closely examining an opinion or advice that initially bothers me.

InkedMaster reads everything i write and i read everything He writes and we often discuss our opinions about the various threads.  We talk about everything.  In this way the message boards help us to know each other better as individuals and as an M/s couple.  The message boards have identified a few folks that, if given the chance, we would love to meet in real life.

Daddy reads everything I write on here also and it has led to some very interesting discussions between us and has helped him understand me more I think, at times.  Sometimes posts get me thinking about things that I just hadn't had the time to talk with him about, and when he sees it, we talk.  And then I understand him more also.

Sometimes we don't talk about something he's read but he lets it be known that he's heard what I had to say on the boards and understands ... the other day he whispered something about 'nurturing' in my ear while in scene and it just tickled me, knowing that he totally got what I had been saying on that recent thread.  [:)]

DesFIP -> RE: mmmmmmmm I wonder (5/12/2008 5:35:12 AM)

If I thought one specific person could provide me with a useful view point, then I would write that person directly. When I put something on the boards it is because I am totally befuddled and don't have even a starting point to get a hold of it.

BrigandDoom -> RE: mmmmmmmm I wonder (5/12/2008 9:07:53 AM)

I enjoy using the message boards to bat about ideas, get other peoples opinions, give my own, state my views etc. The internet was designed to allow easy communication and I believe that is what I use it for. There are some who don't like my posts and that goes for me when it comes to others, but we are allegedly living in a democracy and we are all entitled to our opinions.

FRSguy -> RE: mmmmmmmm I wonder (5/12/2008 9:19:49 AM)

I really love the boards and all the different points of view but I really dont ask questions that often.  When I do ask I tend to really enjoy the different view points however I generaly have a short list of people I would really like to hear from. Pouring over the boards I have found that the perspectives of some of the people are just amazing.  For instance, put me in a coffee shop with l.a. and SimplyMichael and I would pick both of there brains all night no problem.  Archer brings a lot to the table and would be very interesting spending an afternoon with him at his trade talking.  These are people that although they dont say that much ... when they do is likely to railroad your brain. So yeah... there are a few I really look towards hearing a response from but even a newbie has a very valuable opinion to me.

When I post something, I'm always curious about what certain people will say. There are those I butt heads with frequently and those whom I greatly respect. The people I know more personally and have met in real life I'm always very curious about and those whom I want to get to know better. I'd say overall I'm satisfied with the boards, though there are times I get frustrated.

LaTigresse -> RE: mmmmmmmm I wonder (5/12/2008 9:30:56 AM)

I don't think I often ask questions. I've already found what I came here for, for the most part.

Now, it's about 50/50 entertainment and though provoking "hmmmmmmmm" moments. I've about given up on thinking I can actually help anyone with a response to a problem. Most, not all but most, of the people that post their problems tend to be drama magnets that will always have problems of their own creation. You cannot help that sort on a forum board.

When I first came here I was really ignorant about some issues and reading the opinions of others, making some really good friends both here and on the other side. Talking to them, reading what they have to say, really helped me to understand the foreign concept of "joy in service", why anyone would want to submit, etc.

One of the best lessons I've learned is to keep my emotions totally out of the forums, and to read more carefully. To get past typing styles and take the time to really try and "get" what they are trying to communicate rather than the, how. Some people are very abrupt and to the point. Not alot of fluff or sugar coating. That tends to put alot of people on the defensive. ( I remember a certain misty knight I thought was a total jerk the first time I read something he wrote. Now he and his ladies are some of my favourites! )

Another couple of posters I've come to love use their twisted senses of humour to get their points across. That also tends to put alot of people on the defensive. But if you really read, and keep your panties/undies, out of the crack of your ass........there is quite often some really good stuff in there. And a few great laughs for a bonus.

I am more than satisfied with the overall quality of the stuff written on here. If I wasn't, I wouldn't waste the time.

Dnomyar -> RE: mmmmmmmm I wonder (5/12/2008 9:32:13 AM)

Everyone here knows that I screw around a lot on here. I do read most all of the post. I keep an open mind on what I read. Some I take with a grain of salt others I absorb.I have learned some from them. I like the different points of view.  I find that some help to shape my view points. Im open to change. Tho I may clown some here know how serious I can get.

aleshaDreams -> RE: mmmmmmmm I wonder (5/12/2008 2:10:19 PM)

KnightofMists,

When I come to the board to inquire on something it is usually something that is plagueing my mind, so I post to find objectionable view points from the variances of possible experiences that abound here.  My queries are asked because I am attempting to find clarity in thought and need input from others to come to some logical perspective on it, rather than making rash decisions that can and will affect my life.  I do look for input from particular people and hope they do respond, but keep my questions open to enable balance to the equation.  I look forward to well thought out responses from people and there are a few in which this is evident, and others not so much.  The boards are good I believe for giving valued information, though sometimes it takes some sifting through each of the threads to find ideas and / or answers.

Respectfully, ad.

atendersoul -> RE: mmmmmmmm I wonder (5/12/2008 2:19:16 PM)

i have asked questions and also given opinions here....
the asking the questions....i have found more vanilla pretending to be here and sometimes dealing with this is different from my past...so a question is poised...
the opinions i have offered are from living the Lifestyle as Life and shared because of the knowledge....i have never been rude or a smart ass in giving these as i have found some that has....and you are correct....at one point or another....we all had a start on this path.
the one thing i have noticed in my experience within the message board....sometimes the ones that talk the most honestly have the less to say....

(snip for brevity)  So... when you come to the boards with a question or two.... are there some people you hope provide their point of view?

IIRC, I've never posted an actual question here.  This isn't to say I haven't had questions, (far from it!!), but rather I've been able to search very efficiently for past discussion when I've had specific items on my mind.

That said, when others bring up an interesting new topic, I do hope certain posters give their thoughts. Over the time I've mostly lurked here, I've come to respect their remarks as valid, thoughtful, genuine, intelligently provocative, or some combination of all those things.  Sometime, I like to read posters because their sense of humor makes me laugh.

Occasionally, when time is short, there is even a short list of individuals here that I'll search for postings.  The reason is not only because I value their own input, but also because the threads they participate in are generally very high quality discussions.  Basically, this is to say that if they've weighed in on the subject, it will interest me as well.  It can save time weeding through noise.... Lazy?  You bet.  Effective?  Very.

quote:

ORIGINAL: KnightofMists
Or are you more interested in getting thoughtful opinions?....

I'm always interested in reading thoughtful opinions.  With emphasis on the word "thoughtful".  I dislike reading the sometimes caustic remarks made by some towards newbies, original posters, or others, but am adult enough to understand this comes with the territory of a public message board.  I disregard them when I see them, but it still occasionally annoys.

quote:

ORIGINAL: KnightofMists
or maybe you are looking for something else?

Entertainment.  I'm a little ashamed to admit it, but yes... these threads can sometimes get rather entertaining, and I come here for that as well as for useful information.

quote:

ORIGINAL: KnightofMists
How about people that are new (or were new) to the lifestyle.... do you find yourself looking at the experienced people ... or specific people first?

As stated above, I do tend to look toward specific people first (who are also experienced), but don't discount other answers just because I don't know the poster or because they may be inexperienced.  If the discussion is a good one, I take all the answers as food for my own thought.

Usually, yes.  I enjoy the forums very much.

I have never started a thread and post only rarely. I have my list of people who I always read: SimplyMichael, RedMagic1 SteelofUtah and a long list of other luminaries but I am going out on a limb and making a case for the greatest poster here.

Domiguy

A thread is not complete until Domiguy has flavored it with his own over the top brand of piss and vinegar. Every post is guaranteed to make somebody angry. Because every post is guaranteed to be wrong but in such a subtle way and so close to the truth that you end up spending hours trying to figure out just why he is wrong. Nobody can be so consistently wrong but just true enough unless they have a deep and solid understanding. The advice of the others tend to be kind and wise and open, Domiguys advice is a slap upside the head. By the time you figured out how he was able to say something so rude insulting and true, you have learned a whole hell of a lot more than the nice guys can teach you.

If you agree with Domiguy, there is probably something wrong with you. But you sure as hell ain't got it right until you can figure out why you disagree.

Just my two (Canadian) cents.
