Indeed - every one of us is significant.

Quite.

~smiling~

Very comforting in a prettily minimalist way.

Oh, I don't like that at all.

I operate by my own aphoristic philosophy.  It's something like: 'I think, therefore I am...allowed to construct my own teleology.'  Today, for example, I believe the world begins and ends with my own sensations (particularly in the hands, at the moment...) -- sorry, guys, but if I can't touch you, you don't exist.

Quantum physics is all very interesting (oh, have you seen the maths?  Good grief.  I put my tick next to the 'stats for business' box instead.), but this new definition of 'matter,' for those of us who only have a popular, verbal notion of it, is very much like what Nietzsche said about putting something behind a bush and then claiming a significant victory when you find it behind that same bush.

Never, though, would I deny the value for serious people to look into these matters.   I only thank the goodness in the world that I'm not one of them.

How about space? Whats that then?

What's under your hat [8D] ?

Well, I hope it's not Uranus.

Just when we were getting away from the subject of black holes...

LondonArt -> RE: More esoteric than you could ever hope to be (5/13/2008 6:26:24 AM)

I think this thread teaches us all a very important lesson, a worthy message that we can all take away with us and be the wiser for it. That lesson is: quantum mechanics is a complex subject, and lots of people will write absolute drivel when trying to sound clever about it.

kittinSol -> RE: More esoteric than you could ever hope to be (5/13/2008 6:59:45 AM)

Lesson giving isn't an easy look to carry off [8D] .

Regardless of how he looks doing it, the man is right.

This is the internet, though, and the reflex fear of shame that normally stops people from pretending to know more than they do is lost somewhere in the wi-fi signals buzzing above their heads.

Present company excepted, of course.

Distance exists within our universe.

kittinSol -> RE: More esoteric than you could ever hope to be (5/13/2008 7:17:32 AM)

Yes yes, it's naughty for people to extrapolate from notions they know little about, and to use the Internet to flog their half-arsed bullshit on unsuspecting readers, it's true [8|] .

So many snobs, so little bandwidth.

Lol, o please, you know i have to jump in here. Spewing drivel in the morning is so cathartic.
Time is an illusion~
The past is gone like a dream, the future is merely specualtion, all we have is now. This very moment. Past and future do not exist....

kittinSol -> RE: More esoteric than you could ever hope to be (5/13/2008 8:12:14 AM)

Don't you just love clichés [:D] ?

Termyn8or -> RE: More esoteric than you could ever hope to be (5/13/2008 8:35:55 AM)

I hadn't given much thought to time.

Of course my drivel is no better than the next guy's. This is all unproven and it may remain so for the rest of our lives. If anything I will apologize for this much, that I present it so forcefully as fact.

But that's just how I am. But I'll put it out there for y'all to pick apart. Thing is, it's a supposition (I've learned here not to use the word theory improperly) that I have held for many years and nowhere have I found any contradictory evidence.  Of course there is no supportive evidence either.

But we must push the envelope. When Salk or whoever it was said "Hey let's inject these people with this disease so they don't get the disease" he surely sounded like a nut. Going to the moon was a hairbrained scheme to say the least, but the flag is there (we think).

I have not really considered trime. Although I will admit that it is a dimension, I cannot fathom anything like time travel. Although I canthink about the ramifications ofmanipulating time, and have in depth in a fictional work, the reality of it is that I don't think it will ever be a reality.

What's more, if that weren't the case and I knew the secrets of time travel I would surely not share them with anyone. Not that I do nor do I pretend to.

Such information could do such damage it isn't funny. People would be going back to 1964 and running their emenies over with a truck or something. All the while not realizing that they were changing their own past and who knows what would happen.

Time is beyond me, but the thing about matter, well we know certain things, to extrapolate from that point is not so bad. You can all tell me I am full of shit, but I have yet to see one shred of evidence that matter exists, and is not a function of a certain alignment of energy.

My words run short at this time (I heard that) and I must go to work. I must go manipulate all the energy to make the apparent matter more useful to the beings who need it manipulated in that way.

I'd like to go into the subject of time. It has always interested eventhough my mindset does not allow for time travel because my conception of time is rigid. However it is a very interesting subject.

Well, I don't think your posts are drivel, but I speak as someone who has made a deliberate attempt not to learn about quantum mechanics.  Asking questions about the ways, means, and aetiology of life and the world is to fill the void left by its own lack of an answer.  It is impolite and slavish to tolerate unnecessary ignorance, but it's anti-humanist to do anything that discourages genuine curiosity, so I say: on with the drivel.

BlindDescent -> RE: More esoteric than you could ever hope to be (5/13/2008 9:01:11 AM)

I believe Popeye said it best...I yam what I yam, and that's all what I yam.  Does that mean that matter really consists of sweet potatoes?

As to time...The past may be gone; but the actions done in that sphere of influence continue to influence the present and the future.  Actions bonded with emotion seem to transcend time and space. Just ask a woman how she feels about someone significant in her life (positively or negatively) would that be considered reality or perceived reality?
Having  worked in mental health/illness for half of my life; I'd say perception and integration of sensory inputs create one's own reality...regardless of iron, turtles, emotions, distance, or the duration of its memory.

Here's something silly to freshen up with.

DomAviator -> RE: More esoteric than you could ever hope to be (5/13/2008 11:37:40 AM)

The thing Einstein didnt factor in and that quantum theory doesnt acknowledge, to its detriment is that I am the center of the universe and everything revolves around me.... [:D] As I told my college Philosophy professor "I pay tuition, therefore I am".

On a serious note term, been sampling your friends crop again? Doing QC on the harvest? Of course matter exists... Even the though your assumption that an atom is mostly empty space is fundamentally accurate - even the subatomic particles are in and of themselves matter. Besides, the whole idea of electron orbitals is passe - it is an electron cloud in an series of shells of varying energy levels so the traditional drawing of an atom showing the orbitals with all that empty space is incorrect...
