If you look around some, you'll find that there are plenty of family farms yet. They're all around me here, so I'm in a good position to know.

ONLY 1/3???  only 1/3?????????
That is 1/3 of our oil we wouldn't have to import.  That's a lot.

876,000 BARRELS A DAY!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!  THAT'S A LOT OF EFFING OIL!!!

It seems a lot but its only a third of the US daily consumption. The US uses 1/4 of the worlds oil output.

Doubtful that there would only be one oil well in Alaska....This isn't a residential area we're talking about.  It's a national forest. And please tell me because i honestly don't know....which tortoise is endangered in the deserts of Iraq or Iran?   i am all for conservation anywhere, but i wasn't consulted in the gulf.
Changing an ecosystem that has been left relatively undisturbed until now, and drilling in a desert that has been an oil source since before my time....are  a bit different.  As i said, i don't vote in those nations, they have set up their systems lifetimes ago....but i want to preserve the environment, and natural recources of my country, and ensure that my children and their children's children's children etc. have enough forests to provide clean air.

MissSepphora1 -> RE: Many white Dems in WV say race was a factor in their vote (5/20/2008 7:44:22 PM)

thank you.  I was just about to say just that.
Not to mention that part of our oil is from South America, which doesn't have any desert but a lot of rain forests.
I don't understand how people can remain so ignorant in a world full of information.

my, my, my....aren't we combative?
Common sense...drilling in the areas where there is now forest removes the tree cover, thereby removing the habitat for animals...thus killing many of them.  pretty simple, really.
...
Besides...most middle eastern oil comes from the desert...not exactly bounteous in forests....

Two points #1 Oil drilling is not nearly as destructive as people think. I live in Houston and there are oilwells EVERYWHERE. We have an oil well down on the end of my cul desac. (No its not mine I WISH!) It occupies an footprint of about 8' square and is basically like a green 5 foot high fire hydrant. Ya know the rigs LEAVE after they finish drilling now. Drilling a well is not even that big of a project - the area they clear to set up a rig is smaller than one house and when it leaves they fill in the mudpit and reseed and its  a nice wildflower meadow. I honestly wouldnt give a shit if they drilled a well on my front lawn and at $120+ a bbl for a 1/8 at the wellhead share like my mineral lease says I would kiss their ass on the pitchers mound of the Astros game! If youre reading this Conoco - come drill Kev's lawn!

Point #2 A desert is a delicate ecosystem too with LOTS and LOTS of life. A desert is every bit as inhabited as a forest, are endangered tortoises worth less than spotted owls?

kittinSol -> RE: Many white Dems in WV say race was a factor in their vote (5/20/2008 7:47:29 PM)

Have you ever heard the expression "not in my own backyard"? Does this earth belong to the oil companies? Just asking...

MissSepphora1 -> RE: Many white Dems in WV say race was a factor in their vote (5/20/2008 7:47:37 PM)

Just for kicks and giggles, why don't you go and google images for ANWR "forest".

Let's remember some places in the world, like WV where I live, don't have reliable public transportation.  WV has one of the longest commutes in the country, and the bus system in Kanawha county, where the capitol is, is about 1 bus per hour.
There is no subway.  How else are we supposed to get around?

Time to rethink urbanism and your way of life: no change is instantaneous. The times when we could just go and help ourselves from the earth's resources as if they were infinite are, hopefully, over.

MissSepphora1 -> RE: Many white Dems in WV say race was a factor in their vote (5/20/2008 7:54:16 PM)

So it would be better to overpopulate the cities than to drill for oil?

If only Stalin were here, he could round 'em all up and... hmm. Oh, wait... he moved the masses out of the cities to make them suffer and die.

Your plan is opposite of that. Like the mirror image of what he did...

When were you going to say that?  Three hours ago when i first posted and you remained here silent, or after DA posted a reply?  Whatever....i'll give you the benefit of the doubt...and admit that it is tricky...reliance on foreign oil is a huge problem we face as a nation.  i am not ignorant, in the least.  Just as i would assume you aren't.  Fruits being what they are, and all. You seem to be rational, thoughtful, and intelligent...but since you disagree with me, i'm ignorant....that's unfair. i have never relied on namecalling as a means of expressing my thoughts, nor do i say i am always right.  My opinions don't pose any sort of solution...just my feeling on drilling in a protected area.  But then again...neither did anything i've read on THIS part of the thread.  It's simply an exchange of ideas, and commentary.   Call me mushy,(but please don't call me ignorant ;0))i like little things like unmolested nature.  Maybe it's my kink...i dunno.  i even hate to see a new sub-division going up.  Wish we could've done this three hours ago...now i'm all sleepy.  But not ignorant...just sleepy.

So, rethinking urbanism and the way people get around is Stalinism now, is it? Shit, Newspeak really is alive [:(] .

Forcing your quasi-religious views on others certainly is.

You worship the God of Shell. You like him and what he gives you: you make many offerings at his altar. Your devotion is immense!

I argue that we don't have to worship a God of Shell (or a God of Total, or of Mobil).

Who is 'quasi religious' again [:D]?

Sanity -> RE: Many white Dems in WV say race was a factor in their vote (5/20/2008 8:30:55 PM)

Well, at least I'm not trying to force you to enjoy the freedom of the automobile, or to buy and use plastics or any of the other benefits bestowed upon us by the oil companies. Worship your earth god all you like, just keep it to yourself, and I'll do the same with my oil god.

Deal?

MissSepphora1 -> RE: Many white Dems in WV say race was a factor in their vote (5/20/2008 8:32:42 PM)

To say we worship at the altar of shell is simplistic.
What I think is this: I would rather America be in control of our own oil, and the drilling of it.  Americans have it down to a science, obviously.  We do nearly everything within ecologically friendly laws.  That's why I have such a hard time buying the idea that China, the biggest ecological violators, is also our biggest trade partners.  Isn't that a little two faced?  We can't put that waste into our streams, so we'll let China do it and by the cheap products there.
Which leads me to the idea that if we drill and use our own oil, we can control how it is taken from the earth, and cut the dependence on foreign oil.  Hugo Chavez I'm sure isn't worried about the tortoise or the hare.
