Doubtful that there would only be one oil well in Alaska....This isn't a residential area we're talking about. It's a national forest. And please tell me because i honestly don't know....which tortoise is endangered in the deserts of Iraq or Iran? i am all for conservation anywhere, but i wasn't consulted in the gulf. Changing an ecosystem that has been left relatively undisturbed until now, and drilling in a desert that has been an oil source since before my time....are a bit different. As i said, i don't vote in those nations, they have set up their systems lifetimes ago....but i want to preserve the environment, and natural recources of my country, and ensure that my children and their children's children's children etc. have enough forests to provide clean air.

thank you. I was just about to say just that. Not to mention that part of our oil is from South America, which doesn't have any desert but a lot of rain forests. Let's remember some places in the world, like WV where I live, don't have reliable public transportation. WV has one of the longest commutes in the country, and the bus system in Kanawha county, where the capitol is, is about 1 bus per hour. There is no subway. Whatever....i'll give you the benefit of the doubt...and admit that it is tricky...reliance on foreign oil is a huge problem we face as a nation. i am not ignorant, in the least. Just as i would assume you aren't. Fruits being what they are, and all. You seem to be rational, thoughtful, and intelligent...but since you disagree with me, i'm ignorant....that's unfair. i have never relied on namecalling as a means of expressing my thoughts, nor do i say i am always right. My opinions don't pose any sort of solution...just my feeling on drilling in a protected area. But then again...neither did anything i've read on THIS part of the thread. It's simply an exchange of ideas, and commentary. Call me mushy,(but please don't call me ignorant ;0))i like little things like unmolested nature. To say we worship at the altar of shell is simplistic. What I think is this: I would rather America be in control of our own oil, and the drilling of it. Americans have it down to a science, obviously. We do nearly everything within ecologically friendly laws. That's why I have such a hard time buying the idea that China, the biggest ecological violators, is also our biggest trade partners. Isn't that a little two faced? We can't put that waste into our streams, so we'll let China do it and by the cheap products there. Which leads me to the idea that if we drill and use our own oil, we can control how it is taken from the earth, and cut the dependence on foreign oil.
