Margaret Cho, who is an awesome comedian as well as a hot, kinky asian, once said that there seems to be this strange connection between the Renaissance-Faire, Star Trek, and BDSM. Having been on this site now for a couple of months, she's definitely right! Does anyone else see that?

DiurnalVampire -> RE: Strange connection (5/15/2008 4:01:36 PM)

I see a connection...but its hardly strange.
I mean ST had Orion slave girls, fighs to death over women and all sort sof captive scenes... think Gamesters of Triskelion

And well, the renn faire allows us to dress in public, to deand to be honored in front of others and a whole hot of ohter things.

CAnt see anythign wierd about it.

It's not weird at all: science fiction, fantasy, and BDSM attracts tons of people who are highly imaginative, intelligent, and who don't quite fit in with "mundane" scociety. You'll also notice, over time, that BDSM attracts a lot of Catholics, and a lot of folks in the legal profession. (I could be wrong, it may just be a regional thing.) But the theory I have behind THAT is: they are people who are addicted to ritual being an important part of their lives, and it spills into their sex lives as well.

But yeah, Margret Cho is my second favorite kink celebrity.... My first is Jane Weidlin, ex of the Go-Gos... what a hottie Domme!

Did you see Jane Weidlin on The Sureal Life on VH1 a few years ago?

Margaret is very comfy in the homo community and is extremely witty in her observances of gay culture and general sub culture.

Evility -> RE: Strange connection (5/15/2008 7:57:27 PM)

I was never a big fan of Star Trek and I wouldn't be caught dead knawing on a turkey leg at a ren fair. Just in case anyone is keeping a tally.

bipolarber -> RE: Strange connection (5/15/2008 8:32:01 PM)

BSB,

Yes, I did. (I always thought she was "cute" before that episode, but since then... Rrrrowrr!) Luckily, it has been preserved for eternity on Youtube.

You're just being nice. We're bored, nerdy, largely middle-class escapees of suburbia with lots of expendable money. What else are we gonna spend our money on other than silly costumes, going to conventions, and weapons/toys?

AllietheKitten -> RE: Strange connection (5/15/2008 9:31:24 PM)

LOL-I just saw Margaret Cho in Seattle last weekend.

This song has been in my head all week: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVuE2tETwGE

We're a small microcosm of society. I bet if you really look, you'll find a bunch of jocks, too, and others who might not fit into those groups. But, perhaps those who are used to living outside themselves...meaning they're much more likely to role play as adults, are a bit more open to a kinky kind of role play?

At any rate...Live longeth and prospereth.

Oh, most certainly!  There is a strong undercurrent of geekdom alive and well in the BDSM culture.  Or there is a strong BDSM undercurrent alive and well in the geek culture.  Either way, I think it's safe to say that the force is strong in that one.

Where didst thou find such a treasure of expendable income?  And wouldst thou share?  (Ren speak just hurt my brain.)  Seriously, I want money.  I wish I had some extra to spend on lovely gadgets and gizmos and costumes.  *grin*

Seriously now... "may the force be with you"  or my personal fav "scott me up beamie"  repeat as required I am not a geek

FR

I watched a documentary once about Vampires and in part they covered "Vampire, the Masqurade" which is apparently a role playing game for people who want to be lifestyle vampires.  One of the interviewees mentioned that the people who were drawn to the lifestyle were the "weird" kids, the creative ones who were used to being on the frindges of mainstream culture.

It could also be in this case that those who are interested in SCA or Star Trek have already decided that they don't need to fit in so following thier inclinations towards BDSM was just another small step for them.  It could be that there are many people who would take part in BDSM who are more mainstream but they haven't gotten to the point where following their individual paths are more important then the image they present to society around them.

"I ask for so little. Just fear me, love me, do as I say, and I will be your slave."

Off topic: Oh, goodness, I just totally flashed back to the first time I saw that movie and remembered that I totally identified with that line (the whole character, really.) Seriously, I was a kinky, kinky child...

On topic: SO geek right here. Hee. If it has "star" somewhere in the name, I probably love it. :P
