It could also be in this case that those who are interested in SCA or Star Trek have already decided that they don't need to fit in so following thier inclinations towards BDSM was just another small step for them.  It could be that there are many people who would take part in BDSM who are more mainstream but they haven't gotten to the point where following their individual paths are more important then the image they present to society around them.

I think that's a HUGE part of it...it's easier to become more a misfit when you are already one to begin with. My spouse fit quite well into the mainstream and probably would've never discovered his kinkiness if he hadn't hooked up with freaky me. :)

Leatherist -> RE: Strange connection (5/16/2008 8:18:51 AM)

I can see the connection between the sca and bdsm.

The ability to hit someone with a stick makes you a bigshot in both.

[:D]

Asherdelampyr -> RE: Strange connection (5/16/2008 8:24:48 AM)

every Don I've ever met in the SCA has been a Sadist... so its very easy to see the connection, hell at the parties of one rapier company people were constantly swatted with riding crops (thats where I got my first one :P)

akisha -> RE: Strange connection (5/16/2008 8:26:44 AM)

hmmm I'm thinking there are probably ALOT of people into Sci Fi and Faires that are not into kink as well

I'm more into horror, mystery and sports personally. I've seen Star Trek but can't tell ya much about and I've never been to a Ren Faire.

I think the first book series I read that made me go "hmmmm" was The Clan of the Cave Bear Series. Ayla was hot, smart, yet after accepting it, served with grace and dignity *S*

Dnomyar -> RE: Strange connection (5/16/2008 9:06:55 AM)

The main Ren Faire here is just a few min from my house. I visit it to meet some of the people who are in CM. I got hooked on the trukey legs at that Fair.

LadyLynx -> RE: Strange connection (5/16/2008 9:08:25 AM)

Don't forget pagans too! Though around here, pagans are more interested in scifi conventions and Ren Fair, then in the BDSM community.

Margaret Cho, who is an awesome comedian as well as a hot, kinky asian, once said that there seems to be this strange connection between the Renaissance-Faire, Star Trek, and BDSM. Having been on this site now for a couple of months, she's definitely right! Does anyone else see that?

In a word:  "Yes"

I watched a documentary once about Vampires and in part they covered "Vampire, the Masqurade" which is apparently a role playing game for people who want to be lifestyle vampires.

For the record, I mostly agree with you.  But Vampire isn't about people who want to live a vampire lifestyle.  Sure, you get the occasional person who takes it to that level, but it's rare.  I played that game as a LARP (live action role-play) when I was fourteen and I'm playing it now that I'm 24.  I haven't lived, or wanted to live that as a lifestyle.  We have a fairly large group who plays right now, and we're all your average joes.  Librarians, business owners, students, normal people you see walking down the street and don't give a second glance to.  We don't run up to people and ask if we can suck there blood.  It's just a game.  It's fun.  That's where it ends for most people.

NakedOnMyChain -> RE: Strange connection (5/16/2008 3:44:30 PM)

Alright, I'm going to go on record as saying, "Hi!  My name's Michelle and I'm kinky, geeky and pagan!"  Now lets see how many stereotypes I just fit into.  *grin*

Seriously, though, I've always been a huge gaming and Sci-fi/fantasy geek, I read way more than I techinically have time to, I love RPGs and actually used to GM a very alternative version of Shadowrun,  Something Positive and Girls With Slingshots and Dieselsweeties are all on my daily list of webcomics to read, I'm extremely intelligent when it comes to geeky history things that no one ever needs to know for any reason, Kingdom of Loathing is my favorite online MMORPG, I still have decks of Magic: The Gathering cards and I do still play on occasion and I almost always win, I've LARPed Vampire on and off for ten years despite it going through its crappy non-Masquerade incarnation, if Roger Zelazny were still alive I would propose to him,  I might still propose to Neil Gaiman and then move somewhere where polygamy is legal, I want to have David Bowie's children as long as he's wearing his Labyrinth tights during the act, I stayed up two straight days to read "Dune".  *breathes*

Okay.  We've established I'm a nerd.  I've also been kinky for about seven years and pagan for about eight.  I couldn't be happier.  I used to love the, "I'm a rebel, look at me," thing.  Regardless, I grew out of it, and somewhere I knew that the kinky, geeky, pagan me was the right one.  All three always felt like home.

LadyLynx -> RE: Strange connection (5/16/2008 7:09:29 PM)

never been much into alot of Sci-fi, (though I do like some. if it isn't to techno.) Fantasy has always turned my crank.

But your such a cute geeky pagan! (to NakedOnMyChain)

Real_Trouble -> RE: Strange connection (5/16/2008 8:36:23 PM)

And that is why so many people in the BDSM scene do not meet my standards!

Now I will exit stage left, before I am pelted with rotten tomatoes.

hardbodysub -> RE: Strange connection (5/16/2008 9:07:46 PM)

I don't know ANYONE into RenFaire stuff except people from BDSM sites. Not saying they don't exist, just that I don't know any. Trekkies, on the other hand are EVERYWHERE.

meh. most subcultures overlap at some level. it's probably the same reason that a lot of sociologists have historically been outsiders -- like draws like. personally faires seem silly to me, i'm a stargate girl, and i would actually spend my free time away from grad school and Sir with my drop spindle and my lappy. so who knows.
