From young feminist activists to the grandmothers who embrace Clinton along the rope line at her campaign events, many women who voted in large numbers for the former first lady during the primaries have begun mourning the turn of events. They know their dream of electing a female president this year probably will not come to pass — and wonder when it ever will.

"For us, getting a woman elected is major," said Laurine Glynn, 72, of New York City. "We've waited, fought a lot for this. I do worry that my generation won't see a female president."

"Women are feeling a lot of sadness, disappointment and some anger as they look back at what happened in this race," said Debbie Walsh, director of the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University.

And at least part of that anger, Walsh says, is directed at the sexism that some feel seriously harmed the former first lady's candidacy — from T-shirts bearing photos of Clinton and Obama with the slogan "Bros Before Hos" to Hillary Clinton nutcrackers sold in airports.

Can Hillary make it next time, or will it take someone else? Why didn't she get the nomination this go-round? How much does sexism come to play in her, and in other women, getting elected President?

If sexism was exchanged on the commodities market, it would make a lot of people very, very rich [>:] .

I don't like Clinton and it isn't because she is female it's because she is hollow and prepared to lie and when caught in a lie prepared to say she was confused and got it wrong. So the people of the US don't want someone that can lie or gets confused about important issues is all I can determine so far.

No point electing a female president just to break new ground, we did that with Thatcher. Women also voted and I think the funny thing is more women hate Clinton than men, so it was never going to work if she was supposed to be some pin-up for feminist power.

It doesn't help Clinton that she is... well, Clinton, but if a female candidate was someone different, she would still confront deep-anchored prejudice, distrust and misogyny. The current goes deep.

Every woman encounters this throughout her life - I shudder to imagine what it must like for women in positions of public power.

Just my gut feeling, but I dont think Hillary or Obama will be elected, the country just seems to not be ready to accept it, I see another republican, and I think its been engineered that way. yes Im election retarded, but its all so convenient but then Im a lil paranoid at times too.[:@]

I see Hillary Clinton in two ways; the Good Hillary, and Hillary the Politician.

If Good Hillary were to somehow be able to "exorcise" Politician Hillary, I'd be far more inclined to support her.

It's not paranoid to have good intuition... I think you're probably spot on.

peterK50 -> RE: A woman in the White House (5/18/2008 5:44:19 AM)

Hillary gets harsh critisism for things John W. McBush seems to do pro-forma. The double standard will keep women out of high office.

So do I. I haven't got the money to do the ex-pat thing, just yet.

I think women in power are a class apart and don’t really care about such things. It’s simple you are either wrong about your aims and objectives or right and anyone using irrelevant opinions to attack you such as you being female just proves they are no match for your arguments and opinions. In many ways they probably like getting attacked for being female rather than getting attacked for legitimate reasons because to them that would be far worse.

It goes back to that old saying about as soon as you use personal attacks you have lost the argument. It’s true and women in power such as Thatcher, Rice and that Lightbulb woman know it and they take strength from it, is what I believe.[8|]

If a woman is strong and keeps her emotions in check, she's cold. If she sheds a tear, shes weak. Shes also considered a bitch.

You mean that women in power profit from sexism?

FullCircle -> RE: A woman in the White House (5/18/2008 6:03:38 AM)

Yes it's why they always play the ‘I'm a ball buster' role; it distracts people from the other defects they might have such as lack of original thinking or being deceitful. Anyone should be able to manipulate the image problems they face to their advantage if not you'll never be a politician they say.

Brittany Spears is more popular than ever.[8|]

Yeah, right. I like the 'always', as if women never had any integrity, and the implications of devioussness. You know, if it were that easy, there'd be a hell of a lot more women holding the reigns out there.
