I knew it!

It's always bugged me that the word "submissive" is used as a noun.  Its not a noun.  Its an adjective.  I've used it as a noun as a matter of convienence, but it still bugs me and I try to use alternatives such as s-type to avoid grammatical dissonance.

So, imagine my joy when I was composing a cmail and I used the plaural form of 'submissive'--submissives--and it came up with the red line underneath it.  It was misspelled.  And, there is no option to spell it right.  Why?  Because there is no correct way to pluaralize (?) the word submissive.  Why?  Because ITS NOT A NOUN!!!  And, adjectives don't have plaural forms.  That's why.

The fact that this happened within the confines of a bd/sm site is irrefutable validation--because its immanent--of my gut feeling that none of us can be submissives.

We can be slaves.
We can be subordinates.
We can be property.
We can be alot of other things, including floor sitters.

But, we can't be submissives.

All of us who try to be submissives are wannabes!
All of us who claim to be submissives are fakes!

(This same line of thinking should be true for Dominants as well, though I haven't run the spell check.)

*raised eyebrow*

The fact that the term was indefinable in the context of a D/s relationship was enough for me.

I couldn’t care less if some “brain” has justified the word by calling it real.

I tried submissive' and it doesn't come up with the red line, but submissive's does come up with the red line meaning it can't be used correctly as a possessive.

That was my thought.  There was a kind of insight contained in the fact that submissive doesn't have a possessive form.

Sub missive is quite different from submissive.

That's why spellchecks bug me, with their prejudice against neologisms.

If you want to be a twue sub missive, hold a letter over your head or lay down under a mail box.

as i write this, i'm holding a letter over my head... thanks for the good laugh ResidentSadist...
the way i see it, the word submissive is accepted by many as a noun.  and that's good enough for me.  its kind of like calling someone a fuck.  but then again i seem to adapt the English language to suit my own purposes:  ie instead of asking some to accompany me somewhere, i say "want to come with?"  that's not even a complete sentence...

Eh, I guess as I understood it, using "submissive" as a noun is simply an abbreviated way of saying "submissive person" =)

You would think the same would apply to the term dominants but my spell checker doesn't catch it. Conversely, scene is a noun and is not a verb. People cannot scene even thought the term is used widely in the bdsm vernacular.

Sez you.  Human furniture and mimes make for great scenery.
