Last week, Sandra Moodie told how her son Jordan had been stopped and searched by plainclothes officers on his way home from school. They found he was carrying only school books, but took his picture.

Why would the police need to build a database of minors who have not committed a crime, been charged or arrested?

camille65 -> RE: Cops and cameras (5/18/2008 3:52:42 PM)

It's really disturbing.

In a statement, the police said: "The [Met] has, since 1998, employed the tactic of overtly photographing or filming persons in the street as a way of preventing offences, gathering evidence and intelligence and identifying offenders."

RealityLicks -> RE: Cops and cameras (5/18/2008 4:05:18 PM)

Exactly.  How can a photo of an innocent young person prevent a crime? Or identify an offender?

What a waste of time and taxpayers' money.

Politesub53 -> RE: Cops and cameras (5/18/2008 4:12:57 PM)

Its similar with football fans. Police can use whats called section 60 and stop anyone for a search. What they then do, but dont tell you that you need not comply, is ask for your name and address and take your photo. They are now using this trick at demonstrations as well.

Ever hear of a "Free speech zone" ?

T

kittinSol -> RE: Cops and cameras (5/18/2008 5:23:25 PM)

Free speech zone? In England?

PS: although on reflexion you do have Speakers' Corner  in Hyde Park, where people are allowed to stand on a soapbox (literally) and say whatever they like.

PPS: within reason [8D] .

Termyn8or -> RE: Cops and cameras (5/19/2008 12:33:23 AM)

kit, a free speech zone is an area usually a quarter mile or more away from anywhere the President is lying, errr, speaking. It keeps them out of the medias lenses.

Also, if the media were to want to go there and interview any dissenters, it is forbidden.

Yup, some free country we got here.

Well one reason could be that if a CCTV video is obtained of some vicious street crime then these photos could be scanned to see if the youths can be identified.

This will of course require profiling of those who are photographed..
I have no problem with that. Have you ?

Why do I need to provide a photograph to obtain a driving license? I have been driving for over twenty years without a single offence. The answer is, that whilst I have contributed towards the road system, it doesnt belong to me but to the nation as represented by the state, and the nation has seen fit to elect people to run the state who require me to provide a photograph to obtain a driving licence.

In the same way, the nation has seen fit to elect people to run the state who require young people to be photographed in the street, who believe that trial by jury is not amenable to justice, who allow and enable major corporations to have their way and who provoke angry young men into bombing the London tube.

seeksfemslave -> RE: Cops and cameras (5/19/2008 3:24:55 AM)

Whatever the reason that "some angry  young men" decide, in the UK, to maim and murder innocent people are you suggesting that nothing should be done to bring those young men to "justice".?
In Iraq, where innocent people were undoubtedly killed, the local popoulation responded by deciding to kill one another, Should we do that ?

Incidently note the violence in South Africa against wait for it ....let go of her booty........hold on to your Sari.....
against..... IMMIGRANTS.
I couldnt have made it up could I ?

LadyEllen -> RE: Cops and cameras (5/19/2008 3:34:20 AM)

Seeks - of course, those whom the nation has seen fit to elect must pursue the conviction of those whom they enraged into such atrocity. But they will not pursue any path that might open up the reasons for the action or indeed resolve them.

But here we see the stupidity of the whole situation; those whom we elected in times past built a timebomb of hatred for us in the Muslim world that has been ticking away for decades - going back to WWI in fact. Then, when the Muslims struck back and continue to strike back, we get into a childish hissy fit about how awful they are - and then use that to justify more of the same treatment of them - and then wonder that we are spiralling into more and more problems.

We have a stark choice here. This isnt a war we can win in any conventional sense.

It will be either acknowledgement of our past sins and reconcilication, or genocide on a scale never yet seen on this planet. The longer we refuse to do the former, the more likely the latter becomes - and the more often we elect people to represent us who may not undertake the former, the more likely the latter becomes.

Auschwitz will become a footnote in the history of extermination.

This really annoys me Seeks, i am pretty sure you would have a problem if it was your photo they were taking. If not now then certainly back in the day you would not have been happy.

The last thing we want here is a police state, but thats how its heading. Just tell me you would be happy with innocent young members of your family being treated the same, and i will happily shut up.

Politesub53 -> RE: Cops and cameras (5/19/2008 4:04:07 AM)

What has the thread got to do with Muslims ? Its about police taking photos of innocent children ?

Edited to add its about Children in general and not Muslims in general.

LadyEllen -> RE: Cops and cameras (5/19/2008 4:17:28 AM)

and isnt it convenient, in an Orwellian kind of way, that we can justify the photography and even DNA being taken, by an unholy coincidence of right wing war mongering which provokes anger and left wing liberalism which forbids profiling Muslims as motivated to take revenge against the war mongering? By such mechanisms are we all condemned to prove our innocence and all treated as evil - when it is those we insist on electing who fit that bill most well.

We take photos of children, to eliminate them from enquiries - not because they might have done something.

E

kittinSol -> RE: Cops and cameras (5/19/2008 4:24:21 AM)

I have an even better idea: take a DNA sample from babies at birth (it's easy) and do a general census and DNA sample all members of all households and add to the database.

Hey presto! In a few years time, all of England and Wales will be suitably archived. It's even possible to look for certain 'criminal genes': the authorities could put the future offenders under lock and key when they're still infants.

Tough on the causes of crimes... there we go...

Polite the police do now and always have profiled potential criminals. There is nothing different in principle here except it involves minorities. and the Guardianista quangocrats who look after their interests.

LadyE: if the powers that be knew that many Muslims hate the West dont you think its was a mistake to allow so many to enter the UK?
Only arskin.

LadyEllen -> RE: Cops and cameras (5/19/2008 4:27:57 AM)

You know Kittin? I'd love for us to do a nationwide DNA sampling - it'd be amazingly interesting to find out where we each came from, to whom we're each related and so on.

But I'm dead set against it - because history shows us what happens when people get power over others in such ways - and this way is just about the most dangerous way ever devised.

Just to expand on what LE said - In Texas, where drivers licenses are issued by the DPS (which is equivalant to the State Police / Highway Patrol / Troopers in other states) you not only have to provide a picture, you have to provide an original social security number AND an electronically captured thumb print which is stored in the AFIS system and checked against ICE and warrants databases.

kittinSol -> RE: Cops and cameras (5/19/2008 4:50:10 AM)

You know that I was being ironic, LadyE... But I am growing increasingly fearful about the erosion of civil liberties.

I have an other idea! Let's put an implant under everybody's skin: like that all it takes is for the pigs to scan us when they want to confirm our identity. It could be used everywhere: at the supermarket checkout in lieu of a debit card, in benefits offices, for medical and criminal records... Or a tattooed barcode? I can't wait [:(] .

christine1 -> RE: Cops and cameras (5/19/2008 4:56:01 AM)

the only way those flippers are putting a barcode on me is if i can get it in pink that matches my street sweeper!

(seeksfemslave, you should put vampire teeth in your doll and retake that pic! rofl)
