ORIGINAL: MissMagnolia WARNING: I'm an old duck. I actually agree with you, OP. I've found that good manners seem to have taken a bit of a back seat, not only online, but in real life too. Simple courtesy, like a thank you for holding open a door for someone, now seems to be a thing of the past. Mind you, look at how men used to walk on the outside of a path, so that a lady didn't get dirt on her dress from passing horses and carriages. Now they'd likely shove a lady in the way to prevent themselves getting dirty!! Men used to automatically stand up on a bus or train for a woman, now they'll read a paper to avoid seeing a hugely pregnant girl balancing her shopping on her head! Courtesy and good manners ARE less common now, but it's been that way throughout history. I also believe that, with the advent of sexual equality, many men now don't know if it's OK to open a door for a woman, or not. Is he going to get his head bitten off or get a thank you?? I'm NOT saying equality isn't vital, but I do think it's made it difficult for men to know what's OK and what isn't. It's been very confusing for many men, and women. On the other hand, I've had women completely ignore me when I have gone out of my way to be courteous, so maybe we're just more self centred now. Don't you think that's just a bit of a big generalization, MM ? Good manners and courtesy , "Dom/me" or whatever, never go out of fashion. I happen to know quite a few gentlemen who would agree.
