Status: offline 		BOSTON - A cancerous brain tumor caused the seizure Sen. Edward M. Kennedy suffered over the weekend, doctors said Tuesday in a grim diagnosis for one of American politics' most enduring figures. "He remains in good spirits and full of energy," the doctors for the 76-year-old Massachusetts Democrat said in a statement.
They said tests conducted after the seizure showed a tumor in Kennedy's left parietal lobe. Preliminary results from a biopsy of the brain identified the cause of the seizure as a malignant glioma, they said.

Status: offline 		It depends where and how deep the tumor is in the brain...

They dont know right now without more tests being done. The parietal lobe is a very important part of the brain that controls speech, touch, and voluntary movements. It's not an area you want to have damaged. Obviously the best way to handle it would be operate and remove the tumor. But if the tumor is deep or next to important areas, it may be inoperable meaning doing the operation could cause more harm than good as important brain functions could be disrupted. They would then have to look at alternative treatments such as radiation or chemo which may or may not be as successful.

Status: offline 		...there's no such thing as a good glioma. they're known for having poor outcomes, even when you do surgery/radiation/chemo, etc.

Status: offline 		my understanding (and i am going back to my hospital days here so be kind if i am wrong) if the patient is experiencing seizures then there is already damage done to the involved lobe.

Status: offline 		Glioblastoma multiformae (several locations) is what killed my ex. He was diagnosed 5 months before he died of pneumonia. The chemo and radiation weakened his body so much that the opportunistic infection won. He was 47.
 
His father (my ex father-in-law) had the same tumor. He died only 6 weeks after diagnosis. We were told the tumor was inoperable, but they went in anyway to relieve pressure from swelling- he died from meningitis, secondary infection again. He was 54.
 
With both, the first sign was a seizure- mistaken for a stroke.
 
I don't think Senator Kennedy has very long.

Status: offline 		Well a father figure of mine was diagnosed less than two week's ago with brain cancer.  They sent him home to hospice and he passed on Sunday.

That's my experience when it invades the brain...seen it on more than one occassion.  Seem's people just don't seem to last very long after diagnosis.

Now, I'm off to California for a funeral.

Status: offline 		                Ever notice, it's never what you expect someone to die from?  Like i always figured...something in the liver family...a brain tumor is even more so sad because it's unexpected. 
     What i find really sad is how people can rejoice because he is so liberal...i mean damn! Politics aside, a person with a family is sick and possibly dying from cancer...human compassion should surpass politics at this point.  i could see if he were Hitler....but c'mon.  Now we have to die partisan too?   Sheesh!!!

Status: offline 		I'm not happy he's dying, but I can't say I am sympathetic.  It has nothing to do with his politics.  I think about him leaving Mary Jo Kopechne in a watery grave, than walking back to his hotel room past several houses without calling for help.  I am still not convinced that it was an accident.  I also think he helped his nephew cover up the rape he was accused of.  I really don't give a damn about the Kennedys and I have never understood this fascination and celebrity worship that surrounds them.

umm...my comment was made about people outside of these forums and some water cooler conversations i heard today.  Are we not allowed to use real life when posting comments here?  (i hate that i lost my manual on proper posting etiquette) Or perhaps you have some stone tablets i could glance at?

Because the only partisanship in evidence was me saying I disagreed with the man politicly but wouldn't wish this on anyone.
When posting about outside world stuff the proper ettiquette would be simply to say "I can't believe some people I've heard have been rejoicing" That way nobody feels they have been taken wrongly and thus wrongly accused of partisanship in such a crass and callous way.

edited because this needs to be said:
     Let me add though ...that there was really no way that anyone should've thought i was speaking of anyone here.  All the posts up to mine were pretty much sympathetic.  There was no rejoicing on this thread, or any comments that would have incited any "callous" or "crass" comments by me in reply.  So please imagine my surprise when being accused of being divisive in any way.  i thought my post was fairly obviously not personal...i'm pretty direct in such matters.  It was a direct reply to the OP, and not anyone here.  Again, Archer...never any bad feelings towards You on my part.

However more years he lives in whatever condition, he's had a lot more life than Mary Jo.  It's hard to feel overwhelming compassion for him.
