I don't mind taking just a carry on for most times but jeez sometimes I want to travel with toys or skin moisturizer dang it!Even with the extra charge for a checked bag I bet a lot use it, it is awfully expensive to travel for a few days and have to buy all new deodorent (sp??), toothpaste and other sundries. If it weren't for the liquid restriction I would only do a carryon.

I can't just go get new stuff unfortunately, due to allergies, sensitivities and cost. Though I have been reminding myself of the 3-1-1 rule for next week. And to wear slip on shoes. And a whole list of other crap. Geez, I forgot my moisturizer can't go in my carryon. Why? Because it's 3.4 oz. Grrrrrrr...... As for toys and goodies, I flew right after 9/11 with a bag of fun stuff and ended up being searched at every airport. By the end of the 2 week trip when they burst a container of honey dust at Denver International and paged me over the intercom, I was so used to it and matter of fact that THEY were embarrassed and tried to downplay the situation. *grins*

I remember the days when custom officers would get embarrassed if they happened upon a box of Tampax in your luggage. Or a pack of contraceptive pills: English custom officers would go beetroot. It was great.

Now, the bastards don't even bat an eyelid. They've become so blasé [&o] .

Yeah!  Time we shook those guys up a bit!

Do the Spinal Tap bit with the foil-wrapped cucumber and walk through the magnetometer.

Is  squash a cucurbitaceous?

Travelers such as myself will simply decide that the $15 premium that American Airlines charges will be a determining factor on whether or not they receive my travel dollars....for me, the answer is NO.

The problem seems to be that unless you're traveling between major hubs, you rarely get much choice in what airlines you're flying on. If we want to fly just about anywhere from here, we're pretty much stuck with Delta.

However, more often than not, my choice is to drive... By the time you spend two hours in each airport screwing around with all the security bullshit, lose a couple hours to various random delays, get back and forth to the parking lots and rental cars... you've easily ended up behind on anything less than 300 miles, and you've spent a boatload more money in the process, particularly if you're traveling with family.

People laugh at me because i'll drive 800-900 mile runs rather than fly... but they won't be laughing quite as loudly after the Butt Plug Bomber spurs even more... invasive...  security...

You know... that's definitely got a ring to it. Have you thought about writing a novel?

That I don't know, but I do know it would be flamin' hard to zip the pants with that fine specimen aboard!

Squash makes me feel really childish. I try to avoid the place where they're kept at the supermarket, otherwise I tend to make a show of myself with them. They're so plasticky :-).

Do you think squash qualifies as a sex toy, in airline circumstances, or as a foodstuff?

Depends how you're carrying it [sm=banana.gif]

it's going to get to the point where air travel will ende up being shut down due to lack of fuel. then where would that leave us all?

i had the bundespolizei guys from hell, once at Frankfurt airport. They put my bag through, and a purple jelly dong appeared on the security screen in all it's glory...no doubt about what it was.  First guy calls the other guy down, mumbles in Deutsch...then tells me,  "your bag is upside down" (meanwhile his colleague is the one that places the bags on the belt) they turn my bag over and re-send it on the belt...laughing during the whole episode.  And unfortunately, i'm one of those black people that blush...the little old ladies in line behind me that were from Long Island too...they stopped talking to me right then and there....Mortifying!  No wonder i have a soft spot for German sadistic types[;)].....

kittinSol -> RE: American Airlines to start charging for 1st checked bag (5/22/2008 5:56:03 AM)

What's a purple dong? Is it shiny? And more to the point, is it smaller than a squash?

Once a bored English officer got seriously excited on me at Waterloo station (it was very soon after the opening of the Eurostar, and I was travelling back to England). He asked me why I was coming to the UK, because I had a British passport, just to show you how moronic he was...  anyway, he found my pot of Clinique powder in my handbag.

I thought he was going to come then and there. The sweat, the redness, the glistening... he thought it was cocaine, I swear rofl!!! One of my best customs experiences [8D] .

Ok, I knew it was getting bad in the airline industry but this really caught my eye. I mean, if you're flying on a plane, obviously you're flying far enough to usually need at least one bag. So you're screwed in more than one way with them......

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080521/ap_on_bi_ge/american_airlines_reductions

Now everyone will try to carry their one piece of luggage with them. Security lines will bog down even more as additional bag searches are done. Once the overheads are full how will AA gate check? Will you have to pay your $15 on the aircraft as it sits at the gate? Is AA even prepared to gate check 50, 100, 150 bags?

It's going to be a cluster fuck. Time to add yet another airline to my list of "do not travel ons"

LadyRainfire -> RE: American Airlines to start charging for 1st checked bag (5/22/2008 7:22:32 AM)

Kittin, when I was traveling right after 9/11, coming back on a flight from Baltimore, United broke a container of Kama Sutra Honey Dust in my bag. White powder was poofing (and smelling heavenly!) everywhere near my suitcase. There I was in the middle of Denver International, heard my name being paged to report to a certain gate, and I got there, there was this security team, a huge mess and several embarrassed United employees. They also thought it was cocaine and were making a fuss so I let them but I was so matter of fact and calm that they ended up apologizing and looking like fools. Security had thought they a cocaine trafficker on their hands and here I was, nothing more than a relatively harmless sex deviant. *snickers*

kittinSol -> RE: American Airlines to start charging for 1st checked bag (5/22/2008 7:24:42 AM)

At least they didn't think it was an industrial quantity of anthrax [:D] . (You're a very naughty girl. Kama Sutra Honey Dust, I ask you... what is it for, anyway [8D] ?)

LadyRainfire -> RE: American Airlines to start charging for 1st checked bag (5/22/2008 7:35:12 AM)

Mmmmmm, it's a body dust that's made out of honey. You can  use it during a romantic period with your partner or just as a body powder for yourself that smells nice. Here: Kama Sutra Honey Dust.  Comes with a nice feather applicator. [:)]

kittinSol -> RE: American Airlines to start charging for 1st checked bag (5/22/2008 7:37:00 AM)

Ooooooooh, I think I like it :-) .

LadyRainfire -> RE: American Airlines to start charging for 1st checked bag (5/22/2008 7:38:55 AM)

Yes, it's nice..... I've enjoyed it for years. It was even nicer to watch me explaining it to Security and the employess with a few hundred passengers around in the middle of the airport!
