Probably because it pays good.
The last time I went to Ireland Aer Lingus I think it was singled me out for a search of my bags. Not U.S. Customs.
They just took me and my luggage into a room and searched it.
Thing was I had 10 cartons of ciggys in there!
They asked, why so many ciggarrettes?"
"I smoke a lot." "And their gifts for people I know in Ireland."
They didn't do anything! lol
I was told to go and check my bags in and they gave me a pass for the first class lounge, "sorry for the inconvenience."
My then gf had to cancel at the last minute so that may have set off an alarm somewhere.

Ahhh, the manners of the Irish, Popeye! Of course, I can't imagine a US airline doing that, they'd go bankrupt. Oh wait, most of them already are.....  [&o]

This is why i ship my bags ahead to where i am going either fed ex or ups , the bags or bag  is waiting for me when i check in ,or arrive at the relatives house .Never had anything go missing  or lost a package yet , and with this fee of 25 buxs  for each bag i bet more shall use this method soon .
